Man, I miss mountain Apples so much I dream of them.
My chickens have been roosting in my mtn apple tree and totally ruined our crop this year. I am going to coop them up and hopefully we'll get more next year. We miss them too.

Such an amazingly compact use for 1/4 acre, it is hard to believe you were able to put so much in such a small place.
I love seeing how much you have accomplished on your property, and this year I will be joining you out there to do the first stages of work on my jungle to make it livable. Sharing and building better communities is what makes life worth living.

We were about to get a goat until we met it. It was wild. We are going to go with sheep now. They're more tame. We are going to use them to eat the grass and milk. And to give my daughter some responsibility
@@HomesteadinHawaii Hah, goats can have strong personalities. Sheep is probably safer for your food forest since they're grazers rather than browsers like goats. Goats are also harder to keep fenced.

we bought a lot in Hawaiian Beaches in march, it is being cleared this week. we are having a difficult time getting people to just clear the middle where the house is going to be. we have albizia trees on the property so i'm thinking once those are all down the lot will look pretty clear. I'm really hoping to build an edible border around the property.
You have smaller lots than me down there. One big albezia can almost take up the whole thing. And yeah, most dozers don't want the hassle of trying to selectively clear. Its just easier not to.

Something that still mystifies me
Invasive insects are threatening the food industry and ecology all around the world. In Ontario the grape and wine industry is threatened by an insect. In Spain an invasive insect is killing off the olive trees. Some of those olive trees are thousands of years old. In Florida, whole citrus groves have died off all over the state due to an invasive insect. etc etc. It’s a major global issue brought about at least in part by the global food market.

Looking great! We have the same problem with our avocado trees. Thinking of spraying a non poisonous biological spray called Spinasad mixed with a little bit of dr bronners soap so that it sticks a little better thru rain. Thank you for sharing. 😃🌈🤙

How far apart did you plant the fruit trees? I'm in the process of purchasing half acre. I want to do fruit trees, root crops and a veggie garden. I'm concerned whether the trees would cast too much shade on the vegetables.
You have to lay it all out with tallest trees in back. I have a half acre, put a spot for my biggest trees, kept those 10’ at least from each other, tucked in smalller trees 5’ from those in some cases, put shrubs and ground covers on south side of that and still have plenty room for annuals
Aloha, I’m wondering if you have, or know of anyone, that has live black soldier fly larvae. I’m wanting some to get started. I’ve read that they are here on the island and will just come but I’ve not seen them around where I live (keaau) a lot of the online options seem out of stock and I would prefer local anyway if I could find someone that already had some. I’m wanting them for my chickens. Trying to be more sustainable and self sufficient. Thanks. Your videos are always a help.
I put meat in a bucket. Wait a week or so and they show up. That's the only way I know to get them. You can try post in the homesteadin' hawaii fb group and ask there.

@@HomesteadinHawaii veganism is a stance against animal cruelty. I’m off grid in Puna and grow my own food but that didn’t change my ethics. Never to late to care again. Chicken and goats shouldn’t suffer when you’re in paradise. Plant some soybeans :) . Love your videos though keep up that good work 💯
@@Native2Earth after many years farming commercially i no longer feel that way. I feel its better to create the conditions for all wildlife to thrive and to be a part of that life cycle as opposed to clear more land to grow an annual food crop. There is a lot of death that goes into that that the naked eye does not normally see. A healthy system has plants and animals. Its just what I came too. I believe everyone has the right to choose the path that is best for them, as long as we are striving to improve the world as opposed to destroying it.
@@HomesteadinHawaii I don’t see how killing chickens and milking goats does anything but cause harm to yourself and the animals. The point of veganism is to mitigate unnecessary suffering and is a proven way to create more abundance as food crops require less land than raising animals just to kill them. If you were 100% self sufficient and only ate what you grew then your position would be stronger, albeit archaic. 80% of the rainforest deforestation is created by the demand for meat. They clear cut forest to raise cattle to feed the first world countries caveman demand for meat. It’s crazy when you think how we use computers and cellphones and yet our diets don’t match science and technology. Now that information is accessible through the internet all of that is changing.
The common excuse of “since I can’t stop All harm then I won’t try” can be used to excuse rape / torture and really anything you want to defend. Statistics show that veganism / vegetarianism is fast growing and eventually your practice of raising animals to eat them is like riding a horse in an age of automobiles, eventually it won’t make sense but there will always be that fringe population that will stay living in the past for “tradition” . Like all the people who still fish when the oceans are toxic, polluted and ecosystems are going extinct. We are the cause of the 6th great extinction event and I’m just trying to help stop it. Hopefully someone reading this can see that veganism is the answer to becoming compassionate which is a synonym for being “human”. True Aloha 🤙🏾

You can try adding neem meal to the soil around your avocado trees. Nematodes can't stand it!
