- Today, we’re taking a tour through some of the strange time signatures that appear in SNES soundtracks. Odd rhythms, prime numbers, polymeter… perhaps even polyrhythms? No, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Count along with me!

There is literally no end to weird Super Famicom games I've never heard of.
Agreed. Almost reassuring if not for the fact I'll never get around to playing them.
Dude, the segues you made when each song melds into eachother was so goddamn smooth. Excellent touch.
That Megaman X2 Crystal Snail to Super Mario RPG Weapons Factory transition is perfect!
Very nice track choices here : )
I loved that too.
Again, thanks for visualising the signatures.
Yesss! Odd time signatures are great.
Edit: this was a great selection. Love the inclusion of many SNES classics that are dear to my heart. :)
Wow, I coulndt follow the beat even watching the meters, youre a god in this
I couldn't follow on some of them either. Like when there was more than 1
to be fair, I feel like I could have tightened up the meters. Sometimes it felt like I was running into the limits of 30FPS video editing when the beats don't perfectly align to that, but sadly that's the best I can do with my current toolset...
@@GSTChannelVEVO its more than fine! Its a brillant work
I was starved for more "odd meter in VGM" type of videos after わしじゃよ stopped posting so thank you, this is brilliant.
Awwww yeah. Odd time signatures are what I LIVE for.
I'd love to see a sequel, and see you tackle Marx' theme in Kirby Super Star.
That tracker in the top left corner just taught me a whole lot about music. Thanks :)
I have so many personal favorites in this mix! As a once upon a time drummer/percussionist and huge fan of math rock from the early- to- mid- 2000s (check out Cinemechanica and their game music cover bands Contraband and Megaband - yes, they are what you think they are) this has to be my favorite mix that you've shared so far! Thank you! ❤️
Very awesome mixing of music you put here! Love it and Love the text you wrote!
This is the perfect combination of entertainment while learning something new.
You have a God given talent right here! I learned a lot today and the way you make these videos... seem like one long and interesting story is amazing! I'm no musician but I was listening to something the other day thinking, "That sounds off beat but works incredibly well!" Maybe it was Skelton Krew on the Genesis? I don't remember but this explains why that was and i appreciate it!
yeah, Skeleton Krew (MD) does some pretty weird rhythmic stuff! I never got a full grasp on what was going on in there. Feels like every trick in the book, all for a spooky vibe
Marx’s theme from Kirby Superstar has some funky time signatures also. These videos are always fun to watch, it gives a glimpse into why the music is so interesting.
Yeah there's TONS of tracks that easily could have been here. Beach or Akrillic from Plok come to mind.
It's good to see more obscure stuff though.
I really really appreciate the tempo visualisation in the corner, thank you!
ohhh, interesting time signatures are fun! good mix idea, executed very well! (the display in the corner was very helpful)
3:25 It's like playing acid techno.... Pretty fun... 😁 I love your vids. The mix is top notch and the video is fun and instructive.
Love these videos on odd meter. Awesome to see some polymeters in there too. A video solely on them would be super cool to see!
Kinda got a Rush or Dream Theater vibe from this whole thing. Probably the odd time signatures and prog-ness of it all. Great stuff!
I have such a hard time identifying time signatures. This is a really cool video for me!
so much incredible content. I appreciate you!!
So nice I'm gonna listen to it again immediately.
I recommend watching it once for the trivia, then a second time just to stare at the lights in the top left corner.
Editing this video was a challenge because I just wanted to count the beats with those lights :P
These are such excellent tracks and manage to fit those odd meters so well. Excellent job working the meter out for each, you have an incredible ear, my friend!
I'm learning a lot. Thanks for the cool video!
Very cool video, I learned a lot. Thanks!
This video is incredible!
Great video!
Fantastic work. Watching for the 5th time now.
Very cool. I learned a lot.
Très bien.
I love this
If tool composed on SNES
Found again the Tim Follin video and I'm finally taking a deeper look at this channel, great source of information for sure!
Any chance there's some content around about Yousuke Yasui? Unless it's not really matching the theme of this channel?
Hey there, thanks for perusing my channel! To answer your question a bit: all of the games Yousuke Yasui scored are outside the scope of this channel... on account of being too recent. I try to stick with composers that have worked on the SNES or Megadrive. That's stretched sometimes (Martin Iveson only worked with the Mega CD), but never ignored.
Super Cool! Missed the premiere though😞. Nice to see some work from women composers. I wondered if you'd ever do an artist feature on Soyo Oka or Yoko Shimomura, or if the language barrier, a lack of online presence, or requests for privacy would make it difficult.
4:18 Whaaaaat!!!! 😵
I can hear EWJ1 samples at the beginning = )
question: where do you get your vst's, what programs do u use or is it not even on a computer ?
that's a very broad question 🤔
I'll try to answer briefly: I alternate between OpenMPT and Ableton Live. All of my mixes are made in the latter.
My VST collection is mostly a pile of free synths and effects I've accrued over the past decade and a half, from no particular source.
@@GSTChannelVEVO ths for the information wish you a good day
No western composers?
Oops! All Japan!
I have plenty of western composers on my shortlist, to make an appearance in the next mix (most likely. I haven't made it yet, after all...)
