- There’s a certain style of music that seems to only appear in 90s video game music. What’s up with that? Well, it’s called jazz fusion and it was very big in Japan. Today, we’re going to explore a little bit of that from the SNES!

NOTES:
at 0:58 I list the artist as Hitoshi Yamane
it's actually Kazunaka Yamane! sorry about that! (thanks IkariDC!)
at 1:27 I said there was an 18 year delay... my math was wrong, it was 28 years.
(thanks sixteenbitter!)
at 2:07 I listed all of the musicians that worked on the game, but this song was purely Akari Kaida.

these transitions from song to song are seemless! i legit thought i was listening to one giant composition!
God I love jazz fusion! … errr I mean video game music.
There are a lot of common, recurring Japanese wavetable synth sounds that found their way into videogame music in the 90s, but that Roland SC-88 guitar sound at 1:38 will always catch my attention. I used WinGroove as my Windows MIDI softsynth of choice for nearly 10 years and that particular instrument was basically the centerpiece for the entire sample bank that came with the software.
The video I've been waiting for!!
Perfect for a Sunday morning
You have sophisticated taste in music
I learned today that my favorite tune from SD F1 Grand Prix (and F1 Grand Prix Part III) is actually a song called "Truth" by T-Square! As always, thanks so much, great video!
the attention to detail in this channel is supreme ✨
This is legitimately one of the best channels on RUclips. Thanks!
I’ve listened to this medley a few times now - the transition between Megaman and Gundam in particular, is absolutely sensational! I must get that Gundam soundtrack. Great work DJ!
Thank you for your mixes. So so much to learn/discover/pretty much just vibe to here.
wow yesterday I was listening to t-square's albums for the first time and this video about Japanese jazz fusion comes out, what a weird timing.
These videos are great, I get to learn something while listening to some rocking tunes.
Sorry I missed this one, but stellar mix! I've gotten into Jazz Fusion over the past year with help from a friend, and it's awesome to see a T-Square song make it into here.
Dude I'm not surprised this jazz fusion mix is my favorite so far. I remember when I discovered T-Square, its sound resonated so hard with me. This stuff captures such a fun and adventurous spirit that I can't help but lose myself to.
Thanks for the excellent work, and for having righteous taste, haha. Love your vids!
I remember reading a tweet talking about Mega Man 8 leaning into jazz fusion (and MM7's sound becoming dated by its time), so I'm not surprised MM&B did the same. It's definitely a good choice; I have a lot of love for its music.
Awesome as always. Be sure to check out the band "Casiopea" if you really want to scratch your 80's/90's jazz-fusion itch. Their 1985 live show is incredible!
On the Genesis/MegaDrive, the best example of jazz fusion is found in Sega's Wimbledon Championship Tennis, especially the character selection theme!
Awesome awesome mix! And I loved the accompanying notes. Tremendous work, thank you.
So THAT's the genre I've been missing out on. Explains why I still hum Cold Man's theme to this day.
I was going to make a comment about how Masato Honda could have been playing any of these lead melodies on EWI and they would have fit right in, but then he showed up at the end anyway.
Anybody curious how much influence T-Square likely had on video game music in the 80s and 90s should check out the songs "Sister Marian" and "Travelers", both off the same album "Adventures" (1984).
This is great! Thanks a lot for the insights!
Good job
Loved this one, very relaxing
!!!! amazing work !!!!
Super EDF was a surprising but excellent inclusion, I've always liked its soundtrack.
Sonic Blastman had a sequel?!
Along with the EXTMIX #22 this is my favourite for sure
Plus, you made me dig about T-Square and I just discovered a incredible band, I never knew they were behind Gran Turismo theme and might also have influenced Koji Kondo for the SMB theme
Pretty nice mix here.
AN ACTUAL T-SQAURE SONG IN SNES FORMAT!!!! HOW HAVE I NOT KNOWN
Amazingly, that same T-Square song has appeared in at least three games.
.... at least, if you consider parts 1 through 3 of F-1 Grand Prix to be different games. The song was reworked each time, so I'd say it counts
Yoooo
I hoped that every song in the mix would be at the level of the first.
International Superstar Soccer Deluxe is full of these fusion jams like track 'Further Challenges' with beefy chord changes.
Oh true, same for the non-deluxe version
I don't want to promise that they'll end up in the mix next month, but they *are* on my shortlist!
well, I respect these sounds, but my favorites are sounds from these 2 Yamaha Arcade sound chips: the 3 channel (2 chips could be used though) YM2203 (has a more "metalliky" sound than the YM2151 - Capcom´s Commando, Trojan and Ghost n goblins used it) and the YM2151 (has 8 channels and more instrument capabilities - SEGA Out Run used it) ;)
*28 year delay
oh whoops, silly mistake. I've added a note to the description. good catch!
Hey man you need to get into TG16/PC Engine soon
What I would like to know is what is the very first track, the title card one!!
oh yeah, good point. I should really be adding those to my descriptions 😅
it's "Winner" from Battle Grand Prix (SNES)
I went ahead and added that to the description here. thanks!
@@GSTChannelVEVO thanks!!! And keep up the fantastic work!!
