  • On Wednesday, the U.S. Air Force revealed that its ongoing effort to field artificial intelligence (AI) pilots for combat aircraft has already seen AI-piloted F-16s take on their human counterparts in complex air-combat exercises.
    This effort is part of DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program, and is seen as an essential step toward equipping forthcoming 6th-generation fighters with AI-enabled drone wingmen.

    • @TheGreyAreaBetween
      @TheGreyAreaBetween Месяц назад +29

      @@RealisticFPS_It’s possible to go beyond the 9g mark in various aircraft and though we train pilots to hold a 9g turn for at least 30 seconds, both pilot and aircraft can go beyond that. For example, the new Gripen-E has a G-limiter of 9g, but in emergency situations it can be overridden up to 12g. The issue with this is that it will have to go through a very thorough maintenance process afterwards.
      I don’t know what the G-limit is on the F-22, nor how far they went in testing it to determine how far beyond any G-limiter onboard it can actually go as it’s not a plane I’ve had the honour of flying. The only thing I am sure of is that pilots are capable of going quite a way beyond the 9g mark for short periods of time.
      In fact, there was an Indy car that crashed and the driver survived 214g, something that was more than 8x the lethal level. I have no idea how far the structural integrity of aircraft is pushed in testing, but I’m fairly certain that pilots can manage short periods of time at G-forces higher than any aircraft is capable of. Ejection seats put around 20g’s on pilots as well, just for reference.

An unmanned variant not only reduces the pilot requirements of the fleet, but also allows for more maneuverability, range, payload, etc. Keep in mind that even current model jets tend to have much higher maximum G's than the pilot can handle. Uhh, that would be 2D thrust vectoring; being single engine, it can only vector for yaw and pitch. Twin engines, with 2D thrust vectoring, could also vector for roll, providing 3D thrust vectoring. See some of MiG and Sukhoi's latest for twin engine aircraft, with each nozzle doing 2D thrust vectoring, for that. The F-22 has twin engines but only has pitch and roll, no yaw.
    The VISTA is built to be able to simulate just about any other aircraft. So if you want to try something crazy in a B-52, but don't want to risk an actual plane, you can upload the performance parameters of the B-52 to the VISTA and let a human pilot try it out. And, if you get into an un-recoverable situation, you can switch back to being an F-16 and get out of it. Being single engine, there are limits to how far the simulation can go but you get the idea.
    In short, this plane has better maneuverability than most F-16s ('cuz 2D thrust vectoring nozzle) and the flight control system is built to take significant software changes, on little notice. Nice to see they're still flying it, even if they are using it to work on SkyNet version 0.1.

    May I recommend the Anime _Battle Fairy Yukikaze,_ based on a series of short stories and later novels starting in 1984? Yukikaze (Literally: Snow Wind) is an aircraft AI, who is fully capable of taking control of the aircraft if the pilot should become incapacitated. Later "loyal wingman" AI aircraft are introduced (although not called that) who take direction from the pilot or the main fighter AI. All of this originating in fiction 40 years ago. We've just finally advanced our technology enough to catch up with our imagination.

Unfortunately, that group of leadership is long retired. The new kids simply don't have the experience of technology not working like the old guys. And Terminator 2 is like 25 years old now, so maybe they haven't even seen that one, or Terminator 3 that actually told the story of how the machines took over in the first place.

Cockpit AI with advanced sensors will likely be able to dodge any SAM coming it's way. You can tell comparing control surface areas of fighters vs missiles which will be the more maneuverable when push comes to shove.

    We already know NGAD fighter drones will be more maneuverable without their flesh bag pilots holding them back, but what else will eliminating the cockpit do? Increased range, for sure, since we won’t have that needless protrusion or all the manual controls/indicators. Heck, the whole thing could be replaced with a fuel tank or weapons bay. I’d love to see you brainstorm about this!

    • @4Fixerdave
      @4Fixerdave Месяц назад +1

      It also eliminates the risk... which is not always a good thing. Take, for example, the standard "testing" done by nations. Russian aircraft routinely fly towards NORAD/EU airspace and we dutifully send up interceptors. Response is timed, and everyone goes home. Everyone tries to be professional. Nobody does anything stupid (except the Chinese). What happens when the interceptor, or the bomber for that matter, has no pilot? Shoot it down?
      You kill a pilot and it's a big deal, an international incident... best avoided. You shoot down a drone and, well, remember the last time that happened? Remember the consequences? Yeah, me neither.
      Like it or not, pilots are often a tripwire defence. You don't shoot them down because killing them creates problems. Losing that could actually increase the risk of escalation.
