What I love about this movie is that where most other movies go to the "White savior" angle where a white man comes into a tribe of a different culture and saves it from destruction, in this movie it's the white man that was saved by the culture. Dude was a broken man on the edge of destruction and was saved by the beauty of this culture that was so different from his own.

I think we,Japanese, learned to appreciate everything in daily life. Rising sun, shining moon, ocean that give us food, mountains that give us variety of food growing in ground, stone statue (ojizousan) who protect people in the area , etc. Being humble, honest, study and work hard, appreciation and respect are taught when I was a kid. Team work is also valued than individuality. I feel like samurai DNA is passing down to us . However, things are rapidly changing lately in. I hope these precious things last forever.
The only way you personally can help is to make sure you pass these ideals to your own children and hope they’ll do the same. If you can inspire your inner circle and your children can do the same, that’s how you can preserve these values and customs. I’ve never been to Japan, but I also come from a country with a very long history (Greece), and I understand what it can be like to see those values and knowledge going away with each generation in favor of a more dry and shallow lifestyle so as to not appear “old fashioned”.

The balance and peace that many seek in life, but few really find it.
When I was stationed at Misawa Airbase, Japan, one of the many tours I took while in Japan included a quick stop to view the Pacific Ocean a very high cliff. In order to access the view from the cliff, we had to walk through a bamboo forest. The was a slight wind blowing through the bamboo forest from the ocean current that afternoon that instantly put me a peace while walking through. The wind blowing through the reeds and the bamboo leaves gently rustling in the wind is forever ingrained in my memories. One can only experience this sense of peace if you were there, walking in a bamboo forest next to the ocean..

I have a similar memory only it was in miyajima island with the cherry blossoms in full bloom. I was walking down a forest path and there near a cliff overlooking the sea the wind was blowing in with cherry blossoms and a deer crossed my path. waited and then proceeded to crouch down and start chewing on a few of the flower petals. The scene will forever be etched in my memory and it is one I will never forget. It was such a spiritual experience for me.
It's like this in Polynesia as well. Peace and serenity in nature. ✊🏾💯

Faced exile etc, lead Indonesia to independence. That's honour, in being him or to follow him during the fight for independence. Muhammad. Lead billions to light from darkness. And if you want to foolishly take him similar to those terrorists, read the Qur'an & hadith first. Try to find any justification for any terrorism there.
So, refelct yourself on a mirror. You're clearly speak against honour by simple generalization because you yourself have none. Perhaps because of idiocy, perhaps because of mental problem, or a mixture of both.
Many leaders also made mistake. And as honour lies in upholding the truth & justice, it is honour in reprimanding them & refusing their orders when they make mistake, instead of obeying them totally. That won't be honour.

The beauty of this film lives in its detail. Japanese culture is in general a very beautiful one, but finding the balance between the feelings of each character, landscape and the music is just incredible. Especially the music score.. it comes to me, that Zimmer knew how to read all the details in the picture of this film. When I see the kid painting the japanese script with that little light in his face, his surrounding and the music, i feel like a just melt away. Beautiful!
I've always appreciated how there is as much importance if not more so in what is unsaid to what is said. There is a mountain of emotion in the relationships of the characters in this movie. Great comment!

It is difficult to devote one's life to a discipline, but there is an almost spiritual communion one attains with the surrounding world if achieved. This is a film about such a connection.

I respect the ancient samurais' devotion to perfection and discipline. As the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi put it: "Temper yourself with 1,000 days of practice, and refine yourself with 10,000 days of training." I think many today can learn from their way of life, which inspired me to devote my channel to their philosophy.

After this movie premiered in Japan, and Ken and Tom walked the red carpet, their welcome was epic and Japan was, to search for a better word and this is all I can say, the people were very Honored to receive them. Yes Anwarul Hogue, this is a great movie. The way that the people of Japan received this movie was all that needed to be said of it, and I watch it at least once per year.

You don’t have to be a warrior to have a warrior mentality. You can embrace the lessons and values they have to offer whenever you want, as long as you never give them up. The movie itself talks about a life long commitment to these principles. If you can do that, you can start anytime.
This is such an underrated movie. This was supposed to be Cruise's Braveheart and it did okay but didn't really win any awards or anything and has sort of been forgotten. I highly recommend traveling to Japan sometime. I went a couple years ago when finding a cheap flight and it was great. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima in 10 days. Modern and very orderly yet ancient. Kyoto was probably the most beautiful city I have ever been to. I kept thinking of this movie when I was there. Lol.

One of the best made, best looking films ever. The story it tells, the evolution of Cruise's character, the depiction of Japanese warrior culture and Bob following silently, never out of position and the son of Taka- all of these elements are woven perfectly. And Zimmer's score could not be more sublime.!!!

There is a deep reservoir of feeling in this movie. Lots of very deep emotions. You cry because they represented these emotions well...."and then I come to this place of my ancestors, and I remember, we are all dying"
The same thing happens to me I saw it last night for the umpteenth time and I found myself with two big tears in my eyes, I don't understand how it's possible every time I cry and it's stronger than me, I think it touches certain chords deep inside that I'm not able to recognize, even now I get emotional it's a very powerful movie.
Samurais exist everywhere, not just Japan. At you local gas station, campuses, offices, supermarkets, the atticus finches, the tank mans etc. It is a small part of what we collectively call humanity. It is a standard we have set for ourselves and strive to reach that degree of moral perfection. After a tumultuous past, I'm on my path to become a samurai ( not the kind you see in this movie). It may perhaps lead me to serenity one day. I wish you best in your journey.

This was the last movie I watched together with my grandmother. This movie is a stamp on my memory for so many reasons.
My favorite scene in the whole movie is the Yugiro hits him in the leg easily in the first training he is a part of and he hits back after, he is taught the lesson that 'you are already dead I cut your leg and you are able to fight any longer'. No words are spoken and he understands the exercise strait away.
What an amazing cut. The video editor did a brilliant job. But what amazes me the most is the fact that the last scene gave me the impression as if katsumoto is talking to the person watching this video - to us. "My name is katsumoto. What is your name?". As if "What has leaded you to this video?" "What is your purpose?" "What do you seek". Such a good video editing. Good job man

I agree with you. But actually, the true heroes of the film are Katsumoto and the rest of Japanese who accepted them as their own, even though he has killed one of them. I think Taka and her children are the ultimate heroes in this movie.

Nobody says otherwise. We need Cruise’s character because otherwise, we can’t understand Katsumoto and his culture (why would he need to explain to one of his own?), but he’s our point of view character. Katsumoto and his men are the title characters, “The Last Samurai”. Algren was the one who witnessed the last Samurai.
Beautiful selection of scenes. Captures the essence of the movie. How ever well orchestrated the fights are, it's the human story behind it that drives the characters and the plot. Great movie, and very well made.

Most of the film production took place in Taranaki New Zealand, one of the most beautiful place on earth. Mt. Taranaki is split image of Mt. Fuji. People of New Plymouth where Tom Cruise and film crew stayed in Taranaki made a big stone sign

What got me like “WOw” was when bob was staring at Algren while he was meditating. Even he was like yeah he’s feeling it. Almost as if he admired him. What breaks my heart is that at the end we see that he did, he ended up protecting him. 😢

I cant believe the creator of this skipped over the part where cruise saw the child on his knees staring up at his own fathers armor (it should have been around 7:50 min mark)...It was one of the best scenes in the movie imo

Samurai. Like knights in the west were nothing more than rich well equipped thigs for richer thugs. One in a hundred of them might have actually been honourable in the way we think of it in the 21st century. The rest just existed for themselves.

@@AristonSparta Any Japanese history book on the pre-Meiji era backs up that the samurai were mostly corrupt by then. It runs very counter to the romantic ideal of the noble warrior of service, but that's what happens in nations with a ruling military class.
It's really straightforward, if not pleasant. One class has the power of life and death; those underneath wishing to not be bullied or killed learn how to bribe and blackmail and spy. Corruption outpaces honor, and becomes the way of things. Thus fell the samurai.
It doesn't mean the ideals of Bushido are valueless - only that they were not practiced by many who had the opportunity. It is similar to the relationship between western knights and Christianity.

This is absolutely Tom Cruise's best movie ever & one of my top (4) favorites of my 60 years of life. What a beautiful, soul wrenching movie along with Dances w/Wolves, Last of the Mohicans & Last of the Dogmen. Just awesome movie esp. the story line of his character getting his spirit back helping the Samurai people after he too was one of those that butchered the tribes in the states.

You ll feel no God in Church but you ll feel something in Japan, because they do not deny deities. 8 million gods is shinto. Some are more fairies than gods. But you ll feel it, oh you ll feel no matter what you believe inside a japanese shinto shrine you ll feel it
I love the slow place of this film that allows you to absorb all the culture, symbolism and understanding of that era in Japanese history.
Yeah but it’s not slow in that you get bored. The narration, scenery and information is too interesting to rush through. It’s rare in a historical film that has action sequences like this one to find those slow scenes as intriguing as the fast paced action scenes.
