Really well explained. Ex raver from 00s, just spent a shed load on records that i used to drop to, was going a little stir crazy but this totally made sense! Cheers from a brummie exile in Sydney!
Expensive now arnt they
You have a pretty unique way of understanding and explaining this stuff, but it's much more understandable than the "You just gotta feel it" explanation I usually hear from turntablists. Great vids, thanks for posting!
I wonder if this dude is still alive
Mr. White i think yes 😀
he is, but are *you* ?
Anytime I see a video 8+ years old, I wonder the same thing 😂

Thank you! this was very simplified and easy to understand
I think your explanations are brilliant, keep helping us.
Yes, after a few weeks, months it becomes natural. But for a total first timer it is good to count to get used to the format.
2019? Anyone?
no
Omg this was posted in 2006!!! Lol
lol!!!! I was thinking the same thing...lol! Thank God for digital analyzers.
this video is now 10 years old. thank god for analyzers, but thank got for thinking djs still fam.
OMG this comment is 5 years ago

Love youre channel mate cdj is not my cup of tea but i understand tech has to move on. Hope you do a few more vinyl lessons. Best channel ❤
1:25 you don't need 30 seconds you just need a stopwatch and you press start and stop in your stopwatch with the beat. Here are the details:
The way I calculate it without any metronome (software or hardware) is, admittedly, a bit nerdy.
Using a stopwatch app, most mobiles come with one already, just go to settings>apps>stopwatch open the stopwatch app then
1) listen to the song, tap the beat, get into it, until you're tapping it accurately most likely, the song will be in four beats to a bar (4/4) and then
2) with while you sing out the beat or tap it, quickly go to the stopwatch app an pres the start/stop button on the beat twice to start and stop the stopwatch
3) Look at the time elapsed between the two beats
4) Open a calculator divide the number 6000 (i.e. the number of hundreds of a second contained in a minute) by the two digits on the right of your stopwatch after the seconds in this case my stopwatch gave me the reading
00:00.53 which is 00 minutes 00 seconds and 53 hundreds of a second so I divide 6000 (i.e. the amount of hundreds of a second in one minute) by 53 hundreds of a second (i.e. duration of beat in this song is 53 hundreds of a second) and this division equals 113.207.... beats in a minute with 53 hundreds of a second of duration) ..... and you round this off to the nearest integer 113 bpm! aaaaaaaaahhhh (sigh) 😍😍😍 maths 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
your videos are very easy to understand n helpful..
u rock!!!!
INDIA
u are well and truely da man when it comes to explainin things and dj-ing....thanks alot pal
Man your so awesome I've learned so much from every one of your videos. DAMN I LOVE RUclips.....if you know whats up you can learn anything!
the counting was a song on its own :->
man, thnaks for all the information you give us and for your time. (if you count the bass kicks in ten seconds then you just have to multiply it by 6 and there you have your bmp, you spare 20 seconds haha)
you made my day bro!!! big hug!!!!!!
Now i understand more too, Ill make another video to show my improvement Keep it up man!
Thanks a bunch, just got some new turntables and looking for some good tuts. Ill be watching the rest =)
In 1978 we tapped our foot for 60 seconds to the beat = beat per minute
thanks.i now understand bpm.easy but ive never been shown before.great work.
Thank you, supernatural007 this really helped me out a lot it was question that was confusing me a lot when I am counting bpm's
thanx mate for postin these very helpfull vids.
I LOVE U!!!! U R THE BEST TEACHER!!!!!!!! THANK U SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S A VERY GOOD KARMA FOR U TO TEACH PEOPLE FOR FREE.
NOT MANY PEOPLE WOULD DO IT.
KARMA WILL MAKE U VERY RICH SOON FOR BEING SO NICE AND EDUCATING TO MASSES. XOXO. FROM NYC,USA.
Thanks. Yes, that's pretty much how I've been trying to get it turned around in my mind.
I play by ear, so sometimes I have a tendency to sort of ignore the terminology, etc and develop my own distorted view of an instrument :-)
Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate it.

Thank you! This really helped!
thanks so much elle, I just did a quick one now, I played with the picth like a racing car and it did it, I made a tad mistake and the bass kinda caught back but I don't care, I am happy I no what I have to do now, I kinda did it, just maybe faster would of done it, but am well happy
thanks alot man
Remember guys, count the bpm and as soon as they both are spot on, bring it in then play with the pitch like a racing car and smooth it back in on the right picth and then boom, your done sick
awsome videos im learning all ot from u
thanks mate! great video.
you are awesome man.
Your videos are really useful!! :D do you know where you can buy cheapish but also equipment That is good for a beginner??
Hi Johnathan,
I'm not a DJ, but I've been hooked on your videos for a week now because it's always something I've always wanted to experiment with.
Anyway, I have a bit of a n0ob question...
Is there any particular reason why, on turntables, the speed slider is 'up to decrease speed' and 'down to increase speed'?
I just found that a little odd and counter intuitive. Maybe I'm missing something? (I had assumed that it was the opposite) -Thanks
I gota get my technics before they're all gone! Great video.
I think this is for a direct feed enabeling the record being played to be recorded to mp3?
Let me know if i am wrong!
Thanks a lot. The lack of knowing how to do this has been holding me back for a long time. My only complaint is that the record you played was ONLY kicks so im not sure how to transfer that information to my records which are beats with kicks and snares.
Sweet stuff man.
Life before DJ controllers
and i have struggled and struggled to get this shit rite when it was so easy :) thanks a ton !
Once you get the BPM then you shall learn to count by bars.
Very useful vid, cheers! :D
great lesson man
Nice vids.. Great tips.
great videos man
Will do soon!
This is the way i have done it since 1980, i watch these new dj's slap a record on the turntable and they don't even know how many BPM the song is, they just wild guess that it will be close. That shit would drive me bats. I got my records divided by beats. It starts from low and goes up, this way i can pull any record out of that specific pile area and i know they will be in close proximity.
EXACTLY!!!
Song?
Thanx man...that explains a lot
I love your rapping
Agree , jungletekno, but it is a help to a few new dj's out there.
johnathan
@djhenleys Electronic music is generally always 4/4 time, and it is really easy to count out a 4/4 beat to dubstep. You probably naturally tap your foot to the 4/4 rhythm. You just have to count out those beats instead of the kicks, which maybe all over the place in a good dubstep tune.
Mate, try counting manually the bpm in The Quick Brown Fox - The Big Black. Good luck mate
Very useful !!!!!
Thanks for sharing.
I love my Hardcore music. How would you calculate the BPM to a "Metal"" song that has constant changing double bass patterns and blast beats?
@nixi16
you can also count for 5seconds and multply by 12
Someone needs to do a remix of this dude and that Vietnamese guy that went viral count singing, counting together 😂
Awesome :D!
agree with you be play as one along with your tune!
to rreino1, ok at 33 and 45 the pitch needs to be in the middle to be at 33rpm and 45 rpm.
hope this is what you wanted !
j
defo helped me
very good
Dang seeing some of these comments, almost as old as the stuff in my history books !
This assumes that the bass drum is a 1,2,3,4 beat.... but what if the song is using a bass drum line much more complicated? Lots of chill and jazz have that.
for hip hop n r&b: count the bass kick and snares for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. theres a lot of ways to do this.
This was VERY helpful, but I was wondering: Does anyone know the equation to determine the BMP compaired to RPM? What I mean by that is: "Satisfaction" plays at 130bpm, how would I figure out what RPM I need to play the second record at the bring it down from 136 to 130?
nice vids im a dj im goin have to post some vids of my work
what records did you use ont he right side? and the record u used for the left side?
would it slow down the vocals in tune when moving up and down
i lake the pre historic camera cqality
congrats, want a medal?
hip hop beats are pretty difficult considering it usually doesn't have a straight forward combo of bass drums. what i do (which is pretty accurate) is find the the rhythm of the beat (including bass drum and snares) count it for 30 seconds. divide by 2. multiply by 2. then multiply by 2 again.
which is same as multiplying it by 2 only once. Who taught you math?
im really having trouble counting bpm's like do I count the snare or count it in a 4 by 4 loop can someone please help me out
LOL! great example, thanks!
@nixi16 Yes that works but 30 seconds is more accurate.
Why dont you count 6 sec and add a zero to the result?
So what do you advise folks who wanna learn how to beat match old skool funk?? Do we still need to be able to count BPM?
yes and no, you can usually find a short part in an old school funk track to mix almost any bpm in, it sounds nice if you've teased a little bit of the new song a couple times before you play it. Oh haha your comment is 2 years old, you figure it out?.
sir i just wanna ask 30 sec is always accurate?
some times its comes in point 129.50 like this so how to count this?
hey whats up ellsakins..i have a problem why does my "bpm"jump around when i beatmatch after a few seconds its starts skipping it goes up and down a bit.hapoends wt my decks.
ex/ lets say one track is on 127.0 after it goes to 126.9 then back.weird its no estable, had this problem wt the decks, not wt the hercules, only thing i could think of is that maybe is the bass from speakers that make my needles jump, but i all ready put them as far as possible and it still happends..weird..
How does the pitch control work?
Dang I would live in the UK just so you could teach me personally,,,
What are u useing in this video?
You totally could do that, but the more time you spend counting ahead of time, the more accurate your final BPM will be. It may not seem obvious or a big concern but if your "true" BPM is a weird number or fraction, your counted BPM might be off by 1 or 2 or 5, which could make a difference if you've counted 2 tracks, you totally think both your grooves are locked but halfway through a 40 second mix, they start flamming and you're boned.
so the point s to have both turntables with the same bpm , so they mix correctly
i.e.: To know the BPM of a loop that lasts 6 seconds long and is playing in 3:4 time signature;
BPM = [(60/6) * (3*4)]
BPM = 120 beats per minute
From a practical perspective, you're not going to tap/clap hands/dance to something that is 7:8 but from a technical stand-point - it can prove quite useful. :D
Cheers.
if you know your records just match them by ear/ memory
i would say try to do that trick with speedcore :P
But can you apply this method to Speedcore ?!?!?! lol
to christianpiwowar, if you count the kicks in a second and x by 60 you would get it too, LOL!!
so you dont count snare or high hats when you count the bpm ratio?
You just count the Beats. BPM- Beats Per Minute.
@nixi16
Or count to 1 and multiply with 60 ^^
What is mix by keys?
Thanks in advance.
hmmm in house you have a constant bass.... its not that hard to count the beats 30 seconds, but what about drum and bass... you have a snear on second and fourth beat... what do i have to do???
Cheers
And thx in adcance
so this was 15 years ago
i love you lol
Which track is it??
Thanks
@MRkamz2 craigslist?
you know if a turntable has an MP3 line in, what does that mean? oz
