  • I hope that I'm relevant in spite of RUclips, because of my gun company, my kids, my grandkids, my flying, etc. But just in case, here's my latest video! I recommend Gun Jesus (Forgotten Weapons) if you want details on the Vigneron, but for now I'm giving you a look at the parts kit and some gun designer anecdotes that I hope you'll find useful.

    I eventually want to start my own little machine shop that makes firearm components. I am starting out in a tool and die apprenticeship although I've recently decided to transition into CNC instead and I have been employed as a CNC machinist for the last year for a large automotive OEM. Mark, I know it would be different from your usual content but would you be willing to record a video of your lathe setup? What kind of lathe do you use, what kind of tooling, what kind of chuck, etc. I'm really interested in machine tools as they relate to gun manufacturing/gunsmithing but hardly anyone even touches the subject.
    I'd also be interested in seeing any CNC milling stuff you'd be willing to show us. What do you use for setups? Do you use FCS? What kind of CAM software is used in the gun industry?
    I would be so excited if you'd show some of this stuff for guys like me who are taking the process seriously by learning metal working trades. There isn't much info about actually MACHINING gun components that I can find publicly.

      Same here. I worked for 5.5 years in a tiny machine shop with the expectation of getting real training to be a machinist. Unfortunately all they were interested in was an operator. I was climbing out if my skin with boredom by the time I left. I have more fun now with my tabletop mini lathe than I ever did in the actual machine shop.

    • @armorers_wrench
      @armorers_wrench Месяц назад

      @@machinemaker2248 I started out in a small job shop and that was a really awful experience. It was basically a sweat shop and they did not care to advance even the dedicated employees. However now I am lucky to be employed by a first rate company that is paying for all my college classes and putting me through an honest to goodness apprenticeship. I know manual machines and CNC now because of this shop and it's a very interesting gig for reasons I can't really discuss due to the myriad of non disclosure agreements I signed when I got this job.

      I was one time made to clean up a damaged 1 gallon can of MEK paint that had spilled out inside the carton then oozed from the carton spilling out on the floor of a trailer when it came on to the inbound door to be unloaded. We were supposed to have two responders in the trailer wearing protective PPE and SCBA breathing apparatus. Being a new employee relatively speaking I was told to clean up the mess an to hurry. I asked for backup and was told she was on the way. Well twenty minutes later and still no show of help I finally was so worn out of getting a deep breath of air and going into the trailer to solidify the paint that I had a headache and wasn’t feeling well. I went to get the air tank to mask up with my manager was yelling at me to leave it be and clean up the mess. I snapped back that he should clean it up then without an air tank and he wouldn’t even go in trailer. I suited up and another half an hour I was finally done getting all the paint up from the floor and from the other cartons in trailer. Ended up being two of the four paint pails clips came unfastened from can and they were dented from being loaded roughly upside down in trailer. Spoke to coworker later and was irked she never helped out. Truth was the manager and supervisors never even called her. She wasn’t even busy at her station. Had I been properly informed of my rights as an employee and had known the authority the position actually held I could have shut down the entire operation and evacuated the surrounding area due to fumes alone. It was bad. It took a lot of letter writing and phone calls to finally get the compliance the employees who do the work now have and deserve. Sorry bout the ramble but corporations don’t care bout workers like they should. MEK is no joke. Nasty stuff.

    I'm not a "gun person" but I am a "people person" and in that capacity I feel qualified to comment on this video: Mr. Serbu, I've heard your name on a couple of occasions as regards the designing and manufacture of fire-arms and the fact that (to my understanding) you're a DIY kind of guy always interested me. Then, just now, I stumbled across this video and let it play because the sight of those gun-parts and your mention of it being a parts kit, despite appearing to be about 90% complete really caught my attention, that and your disarming (excuse the pun) attitude and un-ornamented way of communicating which is refreshing and easily understood even though this was an off-the-cuff video done amidst what sounds to me like a full-plate of social and personal activities that leaves you a little stretched and, perhaps, somewhat distracted. Still, my first impression of you was favorable and I continued watching the video till the end. When it was over I decided I wanted to see and learn more about this "parts-kit" gun and that's when I scrolled to check out the name of your channel and realized that you were the guy I'd heard about previously.
    Knowing that you are a busy man and that I can always check out your other videos to get up to speed on your work and, specifically, this gun I won't take up a bunch of your time today but, between you and I, I've got questions, some ordinary and others a little more esoteric but all within your wheelhouse and over the coming days I may ask one or two, if you don't mind. I'm telling you this here in the comments because I figure that even if you can't or won't reply there are probably dozens if not thousands of your subscribers who can and will, I hope. Anyway, coming across your channel like this has been a pleasant and timely surprise made even more serendipitous by the fact that, aside from your firearms expertise, you are also a personable and down-to-earth guy, a family man and an American. Talk to you later and as soon as I have extra money I intend to subscribe, thanks.

    That's a great video. I'm looking forward to seeing it develop into what it was meant to be. BTW, I want one of your 50's. Do you have layaway?

    The Vigneron mags will fit in a MP40 with a little sandpaper work (very little) BUT not correctly! They won’t sit in the mag well high enough and instead of feeding properly the round just blows up when the bolt goes forward. Yup! This is the voice of experience. It, FORTUNATELY, didn’t damage the gun but it stung like hell on the hand holding onto the magazine. No blood, not cuts. Just a lot of cursing.

    MEK is available to people with a professional use for it, for example you as a gunsmith for cleaning parts etc.,..
    also, its one of the better solvents for hand cleaning, although you should never use any solvent for that purpose obviously. its better because it evaporates very quickly leaving it little time to harm you in comparison with mineral spirits or other "heavier" solvents.
    cheers

    If one decided to ruin the bolt, a few very shallow grooves could be milled on the sections riding on the receiver as to reduce friction. The mass loss should be insignificant for rate of fire or bolt velocity. And then reblue the thing for longevity.
    Other than that, I think that I would leave everything else alone.

    Would love to see a combo of the luddy and the pulse rifle from aliens ( luddy or lutty is similar to the Thompson that they built the movie prop from.)

    0:43 who told you this? Vigneron is someone who takes care of grapes in preparation for winemaking.

    Despite the Vigneron mags not being interchangeable with MP-40 mags do you think the same is true for Sten mags? Sten mags look very similar and (at the time of writing this) seem to be easily obtainable.

    I think a Sawzall motor operated bolt would make a cool gun. Obviously a cordless one. Or use a cordless 18V jigsaw to operate an AR bolt. Get rid of the gas tube, recoil spring and buffer, and just put a solid piece over the gas hole on the barrel.

    MEK got pulled about 3 years back. Some may be somewhere but not at big box stores.
    It is red listed, you can do a plethora of things the feds would frown on, dope and boom stuff.
    Just saying the other day I miss it. Made my own wood varnish and it was the right solvent for mixed waxes, vegetable oils and plant resins (propolis from bees, like Stratavarius).
    Still online for about 70 a gallon. I switched to everclear and turpentine but there is much undissolved waste to filter, basically splits in half. Will not use denatured, might want to make a spoon or something. I know it evaporates, don't like it on principle either. Evil things were done and continue to take place in that department.
    Cool sub. Just clicked to find out what the word I don't think I'm going to repeat was.

    Mark. I'd live to see you make a semi auto akin to a sten in 12 gauge. Maybe closed bolt blowback semi
    Ugly as a step I think it would sell well and hey, there's heaps of mags you could use.
    Or my personal choice would be a rectangular steel tube stock size to run a single stack in for a mag.
    Even as a one off it'd look cool

      Seems to me the bolt for a slam fire 12 gauge would have to be monstrously heavy, and a closed bolt version something like twice as heavy as that. Could be done of course, there was a slam fire 20 mm anti-tank rifle!

    • @davidleonard1813
      @davidleonard1813 2 месяца назад

      @wilhelmvonn9619 Yes but a gunsmith that might have a trigger group laying about so it could be closed bolt. Overall the weight wouldn't be that bad there are many semi 12 gauge around
