  • In this wide-ranging interview with Jacob Berman, host of RUclips channel @JacobBermanHistoryValley , we focus on the central figure of Paul and how he relates back to the string of figures during the first 40 years of the John the Baptist/Jesus movement. My overall take on things is captured best in my two books, The Jesus Dynasty and Paul and Jesus, for any viewers who want to dig a bit deeper.

    Omg! I'm only 10 min in and had a revelation! James seems to be interpreting Jesus' life/teachings on Torah, while Paul does so on the person (or God figure) making Jesus in Paul's image of him (or who he wants him to be) . There may be things to question Eisenman's opinion of the DSS, but how he associates knowing Jesus through James really seems on the mark to me. 17:23 = As I understand it there were two "factions" in the early church, that of James and that of Paul. From what I heard (not read) from lectures, there were Gentiles wanting to be followers of Jesus and Paul could accomdate them while James has more "requirements" (to be a Jew first before following Jesus). So, the faction of Paul won out as the "requirements" were a lot easier. But then, as Tabor pointed out, there appears to be a shift of emphasis from message (Gospel) to personage of Jesus. In my younger years (am now 62), I used to listen to Herbert W. Armstrong (World Tomorrw) a lot and Herbert W. Armstrong (no relation to Karen Armstrong) said the same thing (from message to the personage of Jesus). Although Herbert W. Armstrong was unschooled and was not a scholar, while Tabor has extensive research on Paul, it seems that present day Christianity has negated the James faction of the Jesus movement. As an armchair scholar am interested to know if Paul redirected the message of Jesus from Liberation Nationalist Messiah (free the Jews from the Romans) to a spiritual Messiah, to free us from sin. Now how would that sit with the James faction?

    Dr. Tabor? I have a question. And maybe you could do a video on that or just simply reply in the comments. How do you understand Genesis 15 1- 6? For me: God makes Abraham a promise, Abraham believes Gods promise, God accounted "it"= Abrahams trust in the promise as a righteous deed. I mean Abraham was a believer before and the whole passage is not about believing in God, salvation etc. Its about a promise. It does not talk about Abrahams general righteousness but about a righteous deed. It would be very nice to hear your thoughts on that topic.

Horse and rider. Pilate may not have been highly significant in the human realm, but what about in the realm of evil.? The Indonesia Japanese appointed governor of southern Borneo* couldn't hide the crew among the Christianized Daydaks because they wouldn't lie to the Japanese. So he had to send the American crew deeper into the jungle to be sheltered by the still non-Christianized Daydaks. The longer story is fascinating.**

      Not that I don't want that man to have repented and returned to the path of salvation.
      But I wonder if Paul meant - Hand that man over to Satan (Kick him out of the church, he is officially no longer among the saved and the brethren), For the destruction of flesh (to keep the church *as a whole* holy, taint free, and from 'flesh'), so that spirit might be saved (so that the spirit of the church, either the presence of the holy spiritin the church or simply the obedient spirit that the church had been cultivating in itself, might be kept safe)
      We all assume Paul is talking about that man's spirit and that man's flesh and that man's repentance and salvation, but I wonder if he's actually talking about the church as a whole. Normally he speaks about, thinks about, and protects the church as a whole not focusing on individuals above the community as per standard Jewish thinking.
      That being said, once again, I do hope that man is the returning man who repented and Paul asks to welcome him back no problem now that he's done with that blatant and grievous public sinful lifestyle....

    Law, statutes, precepts, testimonies. All hang on the one principle. This is how it began with Abraham's covenant. Moses encountered many disputes among people who needed right and wrong spelled out for them--like the kindergarten class. But the law does reveal the perfect will of God. Salvation is of the heart. The benefits offered by the benefactor include what i think is a healing of the soul. We are called to love God with our soul, too. And its the only way to comply with the will of God. People come into the kingdom with the heart. The healing of the soul comes later, IF you desire it. btw,There seems to be some lost knowledge about the right shoulder representing the soul and the actions that come from the soul. We might say, "put your shoulder to the wheel." Or epaulets might have been placed on the right shoulder. (Lol, Paul strikes me as a neurotic and he makes me nervous. Its contagious.)

    • @johaquila
      @johaquila Год назад +1

      I think you are referring to 41:30 in the video. Yes, your find is earlier than 15: 13, and it demonstrates that James is in charge of the community. I think James Tabor wasn't wrong, though, just a little ambiguous. These are his main points:
      - At the end of the discussion on this very important point, there is no vote. Instead, James, who didn't even speak previously, decides what the outcome is.
      - At this point, James is just called "James" with no further explanation who is meant.
      - Earlier in 12: 17, Peter tells others to notify "James and the brothers". This is ambiguous as to whether it means James and the other early Christians or James and his brothers (or James and the [other] brothers of Jesus). And here, too, James is just called "James" without any explanation of which James is meant.
      It seems clear that this was written both for those who already knew the role of James the Just = James the brother of Jesus as leader of the Jerusalem community of Christians, and for those who didn't know and were not intended to learn it from Acts! The very fact that the author downplays the role of James in this way makes it far more likely that 1) James actually was the leader, and 2) he actually was the biological brother of Jesus. It seems to be information that the author doesn't like but can't deny or hide completely.

    Each gospel would seem to have been precise class notes taken from a disciples script. The lessons are taught to Jews while Judaiism was still the religion of salvation...albeit from the written word. Isn't the format considered judaiic? seeing as the title written on the codex shows that these are the first words and the subject? Jews would know the written word from synagogue attendance. The gentiles needed to have the word put into their hearts. I know the spirit of Jesus entered the heart as the seat of desire, but I don't understand. Maybe if I were a pagan, I would recognize the difference between before and after?¿? And there's a connection between the sacrifice of praise and the blood offering of Jesus. Correct me please if I've tangled this up. My understanding is that the life is in the blood. As we sing our spiritual songs or pray, the our breath carries that offering. For example, the "hal" in hallelujah is "breath" in some sense. The "lah" is the song. This is why selah is a pause for the spiritual song. Victory is through the song. I don't know Hebrew. I would like to be set straight, but I'm pretty sure this was how I understood. Now, we are not under a burden to somehow purchase victory or forgiveness or anything else. Am I completely confused? Because I really need to understand. It's not that the calves of our lips or our blood had any sanctifying power, it was, for me, just the way I understood breathing my prayers and following a pattern I saw in David.

    When David asked for the show bread from the priest who Saul later murdered with a lot of others I believe, (thanks for that David), the priest asked if his men had been with women or not. They had not! Why ask that? Tabor always leaves out details that mean something. He's leading you to his conclusions and then says. If those from both camps agree, I might be right! See the hypocrisy in that? David was a Messiah. He'd been anointed by the Chief ointment. Only Kings and priests were allowed to be anointed. Anyone else tries to make or use it gets killed. Exodus 30:23. He couldn't operate as a priest as Saul learned the hard way. Dr. Tabor is a wonderful man. Sincere and sincerely wrong on so many points. What did Peter mean in 2nd Peter 3:16?
    2 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV) And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
    As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
    So what things precisely is Peter talking about that people twist to their own destruction. Perhaps what Dr. Tabor says daily! It's a possibility and maybe probable! Maybe plausibly deniable. Jesus said this.
    Matthew 11:25 (KJV) At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
    So by babes he means scholarship, A doctorate with 40 years of research in the wisdom of man? Calling other men great Mark scholars. I know Dr. Tabor by the spirit as Paul said we were to know all men, even Jesus. No longer after the flesh. Dr. Tabor considers that forbidden knowledge if I understood him correctly in Israel. He'd hesitantly give me my $3000s worth of his opinions I purchased with the trip. I couldn't afford to buy roofs or floors for Tamar when he used past sufferings of people to invoke emotional responses just before implying how blessed people donate and five even more than the price of the trip. Quite a sad shameful practice from a man who claims to " Love" Jesus. I'd have been glad to have conversation with him but he seemed to like to send people as undercover agents even his wife to pry my beliefs out of me which I agree openly to any who will ask. Judgement is falling on Americans I type of nobody has noticed. It's gonna get very very bad very soon. Maybe.all the Drs will be outstanding in their fields. Driven to outer darkness. Foolish virgins. Don't believe in revelation from a holy spirit. All can be explained scholars.

    - There never was multiple Gospels by multiple authors. The Gospel was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them Friday 13th.
