    You could do an episode of “the most misunderstood” of animals that get a bad rep because of some odd, not good reason- like the blobfish being judged outside of its habitat. Also maybe worlds hottest/coldest, words most invisible, worlds most colorful, worlds most endangered

  • @bullmilkers
    @bullmilkers 3 месяца назад +53

    On the color of the blobfish- the further down in the ocean you go, the less light there is, but light dissipates at a different rate. Red light is the first to go, and blue light lasts a lot longer - that’s why the ocean is blue. As you go deeper into the ocean, more red light is lost and everything looks much less saturated. The blobfish is pink, just at that depth it looks brown because red light dissipates so quickly

    • @azunyargh
      @azunyargh 3 месяца назад +8

      You're largely right. Light scattering is the strongest with the shorter, purple/blue wavelengths, and the weakest with longer, orange/red ones. That's why the ocean surface and the daytime sky are blue - lots of blue light scattered all around, reaching us from many angles away from the direct light source, coloring the whole thing. But also in water the inverse is true for absorption of visible light, converting it to heat and stuff. The reds and oranges are very quickly actually removed from water at depth, even though they scatter less. So the deep water is doubly blue c:

    37:50 Parrotfish don’t eat rocks, they eat corals which is why they’re really bad for the already struggling coral reefs.
    Also sloths urinate and poo at the base of trees so other sloths know which trees are already taken. This also helps them find each other when their ready for mating.

    This is my favourite podcast. I used to research animals all the time, stopped for some reason, but this podcast has brought back that passion.
    I remember researching the Ayeaye when I was a kid. Not sure how I stumbled upon it, but they are one of the few species I have never forgotten about.
    Can't wait to learn what animals will be in future episodes. Could be interesting to have a 'Worlds Most Endangered' to see how/why those animals have become that way, and what can be done (if anything) to bring the numbers back up.

    you’ll have to take what I’m saying with a grain of salt here because it’s been a minute since I’ve taken tropical ecology, but I recall learning that sloths come to the ground to defecate because they engage in a mutualistic relationship with a species of moth that lives upon them. once the sloth comes down to poop, the moth will lay eggs within/on the sloths poop, and they in return will poop on the sloths fur to deposit nitrogen which allows some sort of moss/algae(?) to grow. the sloth uses that green growth as a food source and to blend into the environment! what an interesting world we live in :)

    • @brendanmystery
      @brendanmystery 3 месяца назад

      Just searched this up to see if it was true. Went to the sloth conservation foundation. While it is a theory brought forth by some, other’s find that certain parts of theory don’t add up with seen behavior. Apparently, wild sloths have been known to defect at the base of the same few trees always. According to the website, it could be a means of communication and reproduction(?) between sloths. “Pheromones present in urine and faeces can provide a lot of important information about the individual animal.” -Dr. Rebecca Cliffe

  • @StarkNews
    @StarkNews 3 месяца назад

    Hi guys! They actually do know why sloths poop on the ground! It’s because of the methods they use when pooping to mask their scent. Also, a species of moth lives a symbiotic relationship in the sloths fur, and it lays its eggs in the sloths poop while it is doing a dance and burying it. If the sloth was to poop from the tree limbs above, it would give predators a clear indication of sloth location. They rely on being quiet and slow to avoid being noticed by predators.
