  • The first helmet I've made for someone that I've never even met before! The closed sallet was an interesting new take on sallets and closed helmets in the latter half of the 15th century, then continuing on to the subsequent 16th and 17th centuries. And I'm lucky enough to make one!

    I have a hammer suggestion. If you go to a farm store you might look in their horse shoeing department. They should have a 2-3lb hammer with a round face on it. I’ve been using one for dishing on my armory and it really cuts back the amount of work I have to do when smoothing the steel

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  5 лет назад

      I will give it a look. I usually round the faces of my hammers but it couldn't hurt to find something more specific!

    I ahd an idea of making a round skullcap out of just one piece, will that be possinle or no? @Living Manuscript

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  2 года назад

      Definitely! I don't have much of it on y channel but look for a process called "raising", it is how they made many helmet skulls historically :)

    Bru do have any scrap yards near you? Usually you can get tons of 12 14 and 16gauge steel at places like that

    Am currently working on a helm myself, but, it's my first time forging a helm (I use heat to chape the helm) but is cold forging good enought for making Helmet halfs? Sorry if my English isnt very good, not my native tongue ;) PS: I use 12 gauge steel

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  5 лет назад +1

      Well, this is 12 gauge steel and I did manage to shape it cold, so I think it's fair to say it can be done haha. Later on I just weld the two halves together.

    Thanks for some inspiration too start making my own gear. I've always wanted a few bits of simple armor for a basic medieval crossbowman impression but the (mostly) absolute trash gear and clothing pedaled online has always put me off. I'll give it a shot on my own work.

    How much would i have to pay you to make me a coat of plates or a brigandine and ship it to germany?

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  5 лет назад

      It depends on the style for sure. Like I've never made a late 15th century brigandine with all those little plates, but something like a Wisby style are more familiar with me. Although, it's only fair to bring up that I already have a few commissions lined up after this sallet. So I couldn't really guarantee how long something like that would take to do. I really appreciate the interest though!

      @@LivingManuscript Visby stlye would acctualy be quite nice if you could tell me an approximately price we could settle the details if its within my budget and timewise theres realy no need for hurry :D

    • @LivingManuscript
      @LivingManuscript  5 лет назад

      Gig Most of the Wisby coats of plates, like the ones with a smaller number of large plates, would probably fall in the range of $60-80 USD, I can't say much about the types with tons of small plates though haha. I'm not entirely sure what shipping to Germany would cost either though, I'm afraid. If you'd like, you can email me at thelivingmanuscript@gmail.com so that we don't have to keep coming back to this video 🙂
