i think there’s actually another level of context to the song that you missed! beyond just being a song of self affirmation, i think the “when you hurt me, you hurt yourself” is beyonce talking from the pov of black women to black men, who often underrate/belittle us for white women. beyonce is calling out the hypocrisy of that, because as black men they would rather date outside their race than be with women who are similar to them, and that’s a form of self hate. especially as it’s rumored that “becky with the good hair” is a white woman as well. the whole of the lemonade album has double meanings that could apply to race/misogynoir. brilliant album!
