Circuit 1 & 2 failure will be corrosion on back of the two fuse boxes on either side where the bottom of the door meets the sill at the front. If you are lucky and they are not too bad just unscrew the fuse boxes from the body, unplug the connector from the back of fuse box, de-rust the connectors and multi plug connector. Worse case scenario is the wires have broken off from the pins in the connector or connections on back of fuse box have corroded and broken off. This is a common electrical problem on the UK versions of the XJ40 variant of the XJ6. Usually caused by water ingress through rust below the front scuttle panel (panel below windscreen). The windscreen wiper has been fitted incorrectly, should park either on left or right, depending on LHD or RHD. Also worth checking the fuse box in the centre console whilst you are doing the other two, this should sort out all your electrical woes, when you put the fuse boxes back make sure to use some electrical grease to prevent future corrosion. You got yourself an awesome deal here my friend. And look at the number of people watching this video. It's at 17k as I'm typing this. Far more than all your other vids. Upload some more stuff about this jag. 👍👍 Subscribed.
Awesome video!! I’m glad you got that XJ6. Those are very nice cars but this one is in very rough shape. I’d probably get It professionally restored if I owned it but overall great find 👍🏻
I was thinking the same thing. Those bushing usually split and fall out on those models for some reason. Steering components are built reasonably well. Rear struts are horrid. Don't know how many I've seen with the main piston rod snapped in two. And its always been on the left side of the car.
Very nice, it's extremely rare to find an early Jaguar XJ40 (that's the chassis code, not the model) with a fully working electronic dashboard, they were a big issue with the early cars to the point where Jaguar ditched it in favour of conventional dials when the car got its first face-lift, but yours seems to be working correctly so that's all good as fixing them can be horrendously expensive. The early 3.6 litre AJ6 engine is pretty tough so long as it's had some maintenance, it was the 2.9 litre version which was troublesome, and the 4-speed auto box is pretty much bomb-proof. As long as it's not rotten underneath and in the scuttle ends you should be OK. Suspension bushes and ball joints are a typical issue in one of these at this sort of miles but it's not too hard to sort, and the rear transmission mount can also start to fail too and cause some nasty clonking but, again, it's an easy fix...
Hey I have the same jaguar model and put the same switches to start the car - you need TWO switches plus the push button start otherwise it will drain the battery . One switch for key position 1 to energize radio , windows etc, one switch for key position 2 which is the “running “ position, and the starter momentary button
I had an XJ40 like that for a while. It had the 4.2 i6, and a bucketful of electrical issues, like battery discharging overnight, but DAMN it was wonderful to drive!! Oh, and the monowipe shouldn't park in the middle of the screen like that, so there's probably an earth issue or several waiting for your attention ;)
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 I'd be more than happy with one again. :) As I said though, you'll find that EVERY SINGLE electrical ground point will need attention. Jag electrics have always been..... "temperamental, shall we say? (not as bad as the Rover 827 I once had, though.)
That clunking noise at the front suspension is caused most of the time by perished upper shock isolators. These cars had a self leveling suspension (SLS) in the back but looks like this car had been converted to the regular coil spring/shock setup because the rear is not sagging.
Cherish her. I read everything I could find before I bought my 1999 XJ8 VDP. My husband spotted her on a lot. I bought her 2 weeks later, a week after my first drive. She is my daily driver, and I will drive her until she just quits going. You are investing in a worthy ride. Enjoy.
The Lucas years cars were about as unreliable as a vehicle could get. I had a late 70’s XJ12 with Lucas electronic fuel injection, I could only keep it running without issue for about a month at a time. Parts were a nightmare to source. Once Ford bought them the quality went up fast. My current jag beater is an 01 XJR that I picked up cheap with every fault code known to man. Simple wiring repairs fixed 99% of the issues. I’m a shock bushing and A/C clutch away from zero issues.
Might I suggest, DON'T DO YOUR CHEAP TRICK REPAIRS ON THIS ONE!!!!!!!!! Take it to a body shop for the "CORRECT" work. We all have advisors and knowledgeable tradesman just for the asking, here. Xj6’s are remarkably reliable for their age tbh. The 4.0 liter is completely free of mechanical flaws. Friend has one with 180k miles and runs like a clock. My identical car just hit 100k last month and runs like a top. Great find
Says who?. I’ve owned and sold probably fifty XK, XJ, XF and even X-type cars, very trouble-free. I’m a car dealer in the business for nearly forty years. I am an expert in my field. Jaguars are wonderful cars and are getting better all the time. ,
@@rickruberti5214 Hahaha. They were notorious for electrical issues in the 80s especially. Ford did help them in that area. If you think they didn't have electrical issues, you're from Mars.
Sorry Michael. The X-type was not a Ford Taurus, but a Ford of Europe Mondeo. Look it up. What Jags have you owned? Ford bought Jaguar around 1990 when they had six of the top-selling nameplates and were flush with cash. They also bought Volvo and Aston Martin. Anyhow, the changes Ford made were primarily in streamlining the manufacturing process. When they first bought Coventry, a Ford exec famously said that there was nothing in that plant that couldn’t be rectified with a couple of D8bulldozers. They did also improve the electrics by replacing the less reliable Lucas equipment with their own sorted-out system. So yes, the Jags of old did have some electrical problems, but that was pre-1990. The Stone Age. 98% of those cars have long ago been crushed and have probably resurfaced beneath Toyota/Honda badges. Please do your homework before spreading mis-information about anything. I only speak of what I have myself actually read or experienced. I am a car dealer, but an enthusiast first and foremost. Check my website. No dealers near me stock Jaguars, Mercedes, Audi’s and BMW’s, because they are afraid of these cars.
Nice! My daily driver is a '98 XJ6 Sovereign with the 4.0L straight six. The great thing about these cars is that they're too old to be prestige any more, but not old enough to have become an expensive classic. As a result, they can be had for very low prices - although I've yet to see one in UK for free :-D Mine has been well cared for and has no issues so far, but that may be because it was made during Ford's ownership of Jaguar when there was a major improvement in quality control.
@Dojocho Yes - there are excellent aftermarket parts. I bought a new headlining as the original in my car had nicotine stains from the original owner who smoked heavily. Very affordable compared to original Jaguar parts!
It's a beautiful and classic car for free. I think you should restore her. BTW Vermont is gorgeous. You are lucky for living there, Don't take it for granted. All the best for you
I used to have an 89 xj40 Sovereign as a second car for lazy Sunday drives. No codes, all electrical worked, amazing car. It was also a fuckin nightmare. Insanely expensive parts and no one knew how to repair engine problems because it was grey market and had a 2.9 inline 6 that was not available in the US. The cabin was super comfortable with a giant steering wheel. It was my favorite driving car I’ve ever had, though way underpowered. I think gen 3 and 4 xjs were very attractive in the styling department. This is an example of what happens to cars with lots of features when they get old. There is a threshold from which there is no turning back from the number of repairs needed. Even an old Lexus will go this direction once it gets old enough. Hell, I even had a 93 LS 400, Consumer Reports most reliable car for years, burn down on the street from an electrical short. Luxury has a price AND a lifespan.
If your power steering fluid is low, you may need a new rack and pinion. Just had that same noise on my Integra with fluid that was puking everywhere... And it was the rack

Got to love all those who think there're little rocket scientists with their "Jags are known for electrical problems". This is not a comment on if these Jags have electrical issues or not, it's just everyone, even with no knowledge, has to parrot the common sentiment. After a few times its as relevant as the sun is likely to come up tomorrow.
I agree with you burning. I’m a 60+ year old car dealer and hear that same idiotic comment every time i show someone a Jaguar. It’s been my experience with the many Jags I have sold through the years that they are pretty reliable overall. They are fun to drive and the engines and transmissions are more rugged than most. The only upside to the expert’s believing “Jags are known for their electrical problems” is that they are grossly undervalued, and we can buy them for way, way less than they are really worth. Then we service them and deliver an extremely fun and reliable car to the discerning buyer who appreciates fine automobile engineering and design. Let the rest of the idiots pay over retail for their Camrys and Accords.
@@rickruberti5214 I have a MK10, and in all truth particularly in this era, it's pretty straight forward stuff. Things get more complex later on but on board with your impressions. You will have to special order the right fluid for that year as it's not the standard DOT fluids. 5) fix the ball joints and new bushings and you will have a 4 door corner carver that does a great job of soaking up the bumps.
Thanks for the info!
I love XJ40's - never before have I owned a car with so much rusty charm. Had two, both rust buckets, both drift limo's. Super cool and good luck!
Sweet!
Bought a jag. Sold a jag. Happy me.
looking forward to the repair video. It is going to be a good car still!
Engine sound is normal. Plenty of life left
Sounds like the upper shock absorber bushings are done .Cheap to fix
I was thinking the same thing. Those bushing usually split and fall out on those models for some reason. Steering components are built reasonably well. Rear struts are horrid. Don't know how many I've seen with the main piston rod snapped in two. And its always been on the left side of the car.
Awesome car, love those and congrats on your "purchase" haha
call the cops he STOLE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :))
Dude you have 1 cool car there. I have a jaguar XJR 1995, sure they have issues but so do all cars. Good luck with her
Very nice, it's extremely rare to find an early Jaguar XJ40 (that's the chassis code, not the model) with a fully working electronic dashboard, they were a big issue with the early cars to the point where Jaguar ditched it in favour of conventional dials when the car got its first face-lift, but yours seems to be working correctly so that's all good as fixing them can be horrendously expensive.
Thanks for the info!
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 My pleasure...
Good for you man. I hope that it’ll be a decently reliable ride for you!
Hey I have the same jaguar model and put the same switches to start the car - you need TWO switches plus the push button start otherwise it will drain the battery . One switch for key position 1 to energize radio , windows etc, one switch for key position 2 which is the “running “ position, and the starter momentary button
Thanks for the tip
Cannot argue with free
I had an XJ40 like that for a while. It had the 4.2 i6, and a bucketful of electrical issues, like battery discharging overnight, but DAMN it was wonderful to drive!!
Oh, and the monowipe shouldn't park in the middle of the screen like that, so there's probably an earth issue or several waiting for your attention ;)
I think a free car can take a couple of scratches lol
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 I'd be more than happy with one again. :)
As I said though, you'll find that EVERY SINGLE electrical ground point will need attention. Jag electrics have always been..... "temperamental, shall we say? (not as bad as the Rover 827 I once had, though.)
I had a 95 XJ12, for now I will live vicariously through your journey.
AWESOME a young kid as you is interested in Jags! I was too at your age! You seem to be a really nice young guy! Take care & enjoy your car!
Thanks!
Sweet find! Pardon me sir but do you have any Grey Poupon? Felt like we were all being chauffeured around.
lol
That clunking noise at the front suspension is caused most of the time by perished upper shock isolators. These cars had a self leveling suspension (SLS) in the back but looks like this car had been converted to the regular coil spring/shock setup because the rear is not sagging.
thanks for the info
This is awesome, what a steal. You could put some money in it since it’s free😄
I thumbed up for the sketchy trailer overload, subbed because I wanna see this thing restored. Whichever way it's done...
lol, thanks
If the was not running and £450 it would be a steal
I have yet to film ours we got a 76 or 78 XJS12 that’s been sitting maybe 25+ years
Cherish her. I read everything I could find before I bought my 1999 XJ8 VDP. My husband spotted her on a lot. I bought her 2 weeks later, a week after my first drive. She is my daily driver, and I will drive her until she just quits going. You are investing in a worthy ride. Enjoy.
looks kind of like my 1992 BMW 750il V12 except I paid 4,000 for it on craigslist..
You know why thew British like their beer warm, right?
Lucas refrigerators.
sweet
At least it runs. I was expecting it to be a lot worse
Cool Jaguar, man! I love British cars.
thanks
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 No problem.
My dad owned a v8 jag and my grandpa owned a v12 jag, both blew up while doing a burnout
Can't beat free, good job
If you need wiring diagrams etc...I can help you.
I need em if you can help me

Might I suggest, DON'T DO YOUR CHEAP TRICK REPAIRS ON THIS ONE!!!!!!!!! Take it to a body shop for the "CORRECT" work. We all have advisors and knowledgeable tradesman just for the asking, here. Factual quote," THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THIS ANYMORE ". Get it fixed properly and you've got...… WHAT A RIDE MAN!!!!! IT WAS FREE!!!!!!!
Yes its pretty nice
My Dad did exactly the same with the ignition switch with his Rover back in the eighties. This is the only time I have seen this done.
Than fan must be spinning a little fast. The sound of that fan reminds me of my aunt’s truck, I love it 😂
Xj6’s are remarkably reliable for their age tbh. The 4.0 liter is completely free of mechanical flaws. Friend has one with 180k miles and runs like a clock. My identical car just hit 100k last month and runs like a top. Great find
Those Jags were notorious for electrical issues. MB had the single wiper blades on a model in the 1990s.
yes for sure
@@rickruberti5214 BTW, the X type was basically a Ford Taurus.
Sounds like the viscous fan clutch is seized. Had the same issue on my E39. Changed it out and now you can hear the mighty straight 6 lol
All the best for you
thanks!
Great video, cant wait to see the next part
You have no idea what you have got yourself into.
These cars are extremelly expensive to mantain and fix. Uses diferent voltage in diferent parts.
if engine and transmission are ok then with couple of grands and houres of labor you can have this thing back on the road !
Lol, no way am I putting a couple thousand into this
@@ARuralVermonterQqjmcb182 then plz keep us updated :-)
subbed, i want to see this thing become road worthy. Thats a crazy find for free.
I love that little screen in the gauge cluster, so 80s
You paid the right price. My xj12 was the only car that made my Ferrari 308 look dependable . No way to make a profit restoring that thing.
Yeah I own one too, they're fantastic but such a pain in the arse to run and maintain!
If your power steering fluid is low, you may need a new rack and pinion. Just had that same noise on my Integra with fluid that was puking everywhere... And it was the rack
Nice dismount from the trailer ! lol !
lol oops
Great find, yes, that ticking noise is normal, wiper should be laying down to the left, I have a Jaguar Channel here on RUclips.
thanks for the info, and I'll check your channel out
Had one. They drive so well. That 6 has some punch
Great find. Looking forward to seeing you improve it.
I paid $900 for my ‘CL 96 XJ12 and... you should have too. What a disaster of a car.
The smell of gas in the cars is a heater coil
Restore it. You owe the car money !!!!
Bring back to its former glory.
I own an 89 jag xj6 and I've been restoring it.
0:14 that's a very happy Rural Vermonter! Good for you! After you fix and clean it, you'll need a celebratory cigar to enjoy this British gentlemens car.
lol thanks! the guy actually left a pack of cigs in the car too
You’re awesome man! (Fellow New Englander here) :-)
Great car, suspension is just the bushes! I had one of these and they’re great, this one will be too when fixed up!
Finally, a bloke who knows what he’s talking about
Americans don't understand the term "bushes". They think your talking about the hedge in front of their house.
Welcome to the Jag family....You are in for hours of headaches, much frustration and some $$$$ disappearing....However, when it's running right, nothing beats a Jag.
First lesson...It is JAG-U-AR.....Not Jag-UARRRRRRR.... K, at the person below me mentioned, Circuit 1&2 failures are fuse related...Except if there if the seat belts are not retracting....Then the dealer get's to fix that for you for free...Lifetime warranty on the passive safety system...BTW it's fuse #9 on each side for the belts....

You my friend, know nothing about Jaguar reliability. But your last four words are true. “Nothing beats a Jaguar”
@@rickruberti5214 You're right, XJS, XJR, XFS, The XJ's were horrible for reliability, the XF has been bullet proof so far.

*They're*
It's the same thing with Jags overheat, they do if the cooling system wasn't bleed correctly... that's not the cars fault.
Mind you we shouldn't say to much, might let the secret out!
My Uncle ran the factory that built this car back in the 80's. I think it's now a modern housing estate.
cool!
Thanks for posting another great video......Back in the day when that was new I worked in a duplication plant. I made an order for Jaguar to include a cassette with every new car. I remember not making very many. The client ordered premium clear 5 screw cassettes with chrome tape..... The repair video should make for some great content............
thanks, cool story!

I got a free car once. Driving down the road, looked over and there was a free sign in a Chevy Celebrity. Ran great. Guy gave me the keys & title. ...u need better ramps though my god hillrod
I owned the 98MY 3.2 X308 (XJ8) superb car but one thing you learn is the only thing you will ever get free is the air it consumes. All Jags sound sweet, I'm bias being English.
