Irataba, the chief of the Mohave people, caused a commotion in the fall of 1863 when he went down Jackson Street dressed in what Arthur Woodward termed "the full civilized costume" typical of European Americans. Irataba eventually came to prefer this attire to the traditional Mohave garb.The media meticulously covered his every move and devoted enormous coverage to writing about his massive build and intimidating characteristics.

There is a lot of historical significance packed into the portion of Jackson Street that lies between Montgomery and Sandsome Avenues.
It was rebuilt following the devastating fire that occurred in the city in 1851, and several of its structures were able to withstand the earthquake that occurred in 1906.
In the year 1854, William Tecumseh Sherman established the Lucas, Turner & Co. Bank on the corner of Jackson and Montgomery. This establishment was also known as the "Sherman's Bank."
Between the years 1853 and 1894, Ghirardelli Chocolate ran a factory in the buildings located at Nos. 415-431.
Located at Nos. 451-455, the Hotaling Whiskey Warehouse was constructed in the year 1866.
Following the earthquake, the Army made the decision not to demolish any of the buildings on this block out of concern that doing so could set off the whiskey barrels that were stored in the warehouse, which would then result in an explosion.
In the year 1866, construction began on the Hotaling Building, which is now located at 466 Jackson Street.

Along the road, from east to west, notable structures include the Eureka Theatre, the International Hotel Manilatown Center, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, the San Francisco Chinese Hospital, the Han Palace Antique and Art Center, Jackson Market, the German Consulate, Jackson Court, the San Francisco Public Montessori, Calvary Presbyterian Church, Whittier Mansion, and San Francisco University High School. Other notable structures along the road include the San Francisco Chinese Hospital, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, the San Francisco Chinese Hospital, the Han Palace Antique and Art
In addition, the Academy of Art University owns and manages a building on the street that is reserved exclusively for graduate students looking for housing.
