Not only that, to which I totally agree; but he happens to be also an extraordinary funny man; however, his performance of 'The Lord of the Rings' is second to none! :):):)
I don't care what any wannabe says, but Sir Galway is one of the greatest flutist of all time. When you "critics" reach his level of performance, then comment. Other STHU!! OMG. He's such a joy to see perform live. I've also attended a few masterclasses. He told me I have a beautiful sound and very music musical. 😥😥😥❤❤❤
so beautifully expressed on the flute...sir galway is very unique in his tone which makes everything beautiful anyway. this is a favorite piece of mine, especially as i am in my 31st year as schubert was in his final...
About the vibrato issue: 1. Teachers insist that students should not play with a big vibrato, and for good reason: they do it incorrectly, and the resulting sound is unattractive. James Galway can do it so well because he has tremendous lung capacity; his deep and rapid river of air easily produces a good vibration. Students tend to use a vibration of the throat muscles or the cheeks or something else to imitate vibrato, and it sounds bad. 2. Vibrato is a matter of taste. Baroque players have, since I guess about the 1970s with the revival of historically accurate performance practice, preferred to eliminate vibrato, not only in flute but string instruments. The result is quite beautiful and has become standard. A lot of singing now does away with vibrato; the great a cappella groups Take 6 and Chanticleer are famous for their pure tones without vibrato, which makes their close harmonies super clear. James Galway is a soloist who, in my view, takes as his standard the great opera singers. This is appropriate, because like a great singer he stands alone before an orchestra and his sound carries over everything, over all the instruments, and reaches every listener in every row in the audience. He also emphasizes the emotions of each piece of music, whether light or heavy, and like most good players and singers, the speed of the vibrato differs depending on the mood. 3. I have always found his vibrato bewitching. He uses far less in baroque and far more in romantic. I think flutists like to nitpick in order to crow about something. But flutists don't really have the last word; audiences do, and around the world people have been eager to listen to Sir James over and over. Can't really argue against that.
THE vibration is expression of soul. If its not there its like a Bolivian flutist playing "El condor pasa" without it. It will sound dry and cold. The vibrato must emerge naturally. I play the flute too and everyone got emotioned by my vibrato. I do it at breathing deeply and effortlessly.
@@jorgemartin5093 It always seemed to me vibrato is like when you are singing, when you are relaxed, with no tension and into the music it isn't forced, it just happens. If you find yourself trying - it's already wrong.
One of the very few flute tones that I like. Rich and full bodied and James Galway has always something to tell with the music. Truly one of the greatest artist of our times
Hahaha! Jimmy at his best (nearly) showing a stunned Japanese audience of flute players how they will never be able to play! (1985) "How does he get that sound?"
I didn't actually, but halfway through the video, I scrolled down and saw your comment, and then I went back and continued watching the video and saw him turn the page while playing... Although he did it really subtly, which was amazing!
Hernan Baumann casi tan bueno como la version de guitarra casi tan bueno como la version de viola casi tan bueno como la version de trompeta, conoce alguna version que no sea buena? en definitiva el merito es del franz, o no?
I love his transitions between octaves... oh wait, there aren’t any.... so perfectly seamless. He has a sound like NO OTHER.... or no... there is no other like HE is. A tone one dreams about and never, ever tires of hearing.... would so love to see and hear him in concert... front row so I could pretend he’s playing just for me!!! 🙄❤️
Does he still do concerts ...was lucky to hear him in his prime...the sound was unique I think. There was one famous music critic who never waited for his encores!
@@chrismoffitt The man is now dead , he was Charles Acton of the Irish Times. Tom Greene ok. Sorry / did I misinterpret? Or was it a thing between them??? Once at a major symphonic event, a lady was gushing at the flute soloist and telling him “You’re as good as Galway,”. to which the reply was, “ Well I certainly hope so.” I did snicker as I turned away - he glared at me for quite some time. Have heard MANY a performer (do we say flutist now or still flautist??). Never EVER have I heard the dulcet (is that an appropriate word?) tones he can get a flute to sing. Am a not so great, but not mediocre player... have practiced in the shower for hours, listening to his more popular recordings on vinyl of course, and playing by ear. Dang, the acoustics make me sound great! But there just is no one who can come close to this Irish king of music. Would SO love to hear him as you have but not holding my breath (and certainly would not want him to hear ME 🙄). Do you play professionally????
I will make an update this live at Shinjyuku Bunka Center on 17 Sep in 1985, and on 30 Sep in 1982 and 2 March in 1988 on Ibukitube site soon. Best regards.
you have to practise daily :) hard work, i knows his priorty :) And followed his path. but hes from another generation, today we focus on social media instead of practise the things we enjoy
U can read music accentuate music just play divinely but but James g knows every little etude ie note and flute by Mozart vivaldi what a pleasure to listen to genisus
I normally hate transcriptions with a vengeance; however, this doesn't just work - it's actually better here than on the strings. Mind you, JG may have something to do with that ;-)
My favourite flutist. Absolutely. One of my dreams in my life is to attend his concert and hear him playing the flute.
I love how focused and clear is his sound!
he's one of the greatest flutist ever. everything he plays says something other cannot express. that's all
Not only that, to which I totally agree; but he happens to be also an extraordinary funny man; however, his performance of 'The Lord of the Rings' is second to none! :):):)
Dear Marco, Mr. James Galway is not just one of the greatest flutist ever, he is The Greatest Flutist ever.
INDEED!!!!
@@dieterjordan958 He certainly is. I've attended a few masterclasses with him. He is such a wonderful and funny person. Lol
It’s called a flautist

Always, so good to hear his music, how long I have labored to make such beauty of my own. God bless the lover of music, James Galway ♥
Hello Susan, how are you doing?
You’ve got good taste in music.
I absolutely loved everything about this performance. BRILLIANT.

That moment you realize you have a LONG LONG WAYS TO GO
how beautiful! recently in my garden near Moscow there was a rose of selection David Austin bearing a name of this great flutist

Really amazing, he is the only one which can create this focused sound especially in the higher register the sound is so different in a good way.
Not to diminish Galway's perfection in any way, but I must say, Schubert! What writing!
Just another Galway amazing performance.........beautiful!
I knew this beautiful sonata with cello. Now I listen to the flute and am equally enchanted. What a gem Schubert has gifted us!

Truly one of the greatest artist of our times
he looks so delighted playing hes flute they sound so nice
SO BEAUTIFUL!! O my god !
It's perfect !!
Sherin, he was called "The man with the Golden Flute" - I think it was even a name on one of his records.
Believe me or not this helps my anxiety
I like to believe that no one could give a massive f uck
Same it helps lot ❤
I can hear James Galway for hours together!
Unique colors and nuances :-) Thank you for the upload!!!

great soul...immense flautist, but it is the first time I see him read, he usually plays everything by heart!

Yawn
No not really, Happy Election day
The sound is full and sweet. This piece would work well on clarinet too.
Practising this for my grade 8; it's nice to hear how the master plays it!
Brawississimo ! Nette und Perfectione interpretation !
Wirkliche Schubertmusik! Platine interpretation!
ON THAT TIMES VIBRATO IT WAS VERY HARD TO OBTAIN.....
Maestro de maestros, pasar de viola a flauta no es pavada...o cello.... Arte! Enjoy.

You’ve got good taste in music.
One of the few musicians that have a sound you just recognize right away.
wonderful tone.

That was hella clean
Totalmente embriagada na doçura desses acordes.
Sonhando de olhos abertos!
I liked it, but I would recommend listening to the original version for cello, with Miklos Pereny and Andras Schaff, sublime.
Cello has the perfect sound for It, but it's not the original, which was...for arpeggione!
Nice transcription.
