      You can train just on the ground. Try to hold your breath for one minute just go for it don't panic just take it easy. After you nailed one minute you gonna aim for 30 seconds more until you can hit like 3/5 minutes. Do it like once a day when you'r mind says "stop let me breath" keep holding your breath! you will be able to hold your breath for 2 minutes after one month i assure you.

      if you are held under a wave the best chance is to go as far down as you can and look for an underwater crevice, get sucked in and hope there's an air-filled cave at the end of it. The most important part is the air-filled cave, I cannot stress it enough.

    I went to a beach with big waves and it wiped me out, and as somebody who's terrified of the ocean I pretty much almost had a panic attack under the water. it flipped me around and when I got up I was a mess and I literally turned around to fix myself and another wave fucking took me out and I swallowed a lot of water. never realized how strong the water is.

    Been surfing big waves in Hawaii for decades now. The number one thing I've learned is that whether or not you got a breath or not, or get the wind knocked out of you, you have five minutes. What creates that panicked feeling is the build up of co2, not the lack of oxygen. I become a happy little piece of seaweed with no care or interest in the amount of lung burn or rag dolling I get. I mentally check out, for the full body enema. Time perception is weird on a hold down. I just stay relax. Practice holding your breath with kids jumping on you with no breath with the hose full blast in your face.

  • @georgejames48
    @georgejames48 9 лет назад +8

    That's good training. The toughest thing with wipeouts is sometimes they happen and you don't catch your breath. When you're held under water for tens of seconds with no air it gets scary. I've been worked to the point I didn't know which way was up and have swam towards the bottom instead of up. I've also been a mile out and had a leash snap at the end of a long session where everyone got scattered, and almost didn't make the swim back in. When I got into surfing a long time ago I thought it was great that you fell in the water and couldn't get hurt (unlike skateboarding). You quickly learn you can get easily hurt or killed. The board can hit you, you can get held down or knocked out. I also surfed alone sometimes as a beginner since my roommates didn't want to wake up early. That didn't last too long as I got half knocked out one day, which was lucky. If I got knocked out completely I would have been done. Never surfed alone after that. So yeah, you have to be careful out there and never surf alone.

      Samuel Acosta it does take training, but its mainly doing the same exercise every day, gradually increasing the amount of time you go under. Some people also do breathing techniques before diving, but I don't think you could apply that to big wave surfing.

    Being native to the Pacific Northwest coast, the winter time is always the time of year that gets the adrenaline going because the waves double and triple up in size from the summer swells and you spend more time underwater. Even a wave that is 10 feet high can really have some power behind it and a 5 second hold down can feel like 30 seconds. Nothing like that feeling of getting washing machined under a wave.

    The thing about surviving these hold downs is we gotta get a good gasp of air in before being driven down. Several times I have gone down face first and quickly, with little time to breathe in. Maybe this training gives us 2 minutes at the most.

    I swear on my life, God saved me. I remember one time, i was about 10-11 years old and the massive wave ( not really that big, but decent ) pushed me under and no matter what i did i could NOT get up. At the last second, I felt like i was gonna drown, something told me to relax and stay still. So of course, I did. I KID YOU NOT my body was turned underwater so i was facing the sky, and i was 100% able to breathe while still under water. I just sat under there in shock because, ya know, i was breathing under the water. And I was just watching the waves flow over the surface because i was at the bottom. It was scary but amazing

    How do they stay down so easily in the pool without any weightbelts/similar to hold them down?

    • @Mk2Brett
      @Mk2Brett 9 лет назад +14

      Nico Jansen van Vuuren The deeper you go the denser your body becomes due to the pressure, making your body less boyant and easier to stay down. This is apparent if you ever start freediving.

    • @rnordquest
      @rnordquest 9 лет назад

      +Mk2Brett Well it can't really become denser since it's mostly liquid and solid anyway. It does however compress the air in your lungs which has the same effect. Just exhale and see whether you sink or float; I sink. The more fat you have the better you float. It's why world class swimmers look like normal people and distance runners look like they haven't eaten in weeks.

    • @Mk2Brett
      @Mk2Brett 9 лет назад

      +rnordquest You're an idiot.
      When you're diving at shallower depths your bodys density is relatively close to that of the water surrounding you, the deeper you go, the density of the water around you doesn't change enough to have any real effects on your descent, however...The pressure begins to shrink your lungs, now if we go back to highschool science, which i believe is the level needed to explain this to you, Density = mass/volume, now as we descend our mass doesn't change, but Wait, did we just mention that our lungs compress due to pressure? Does this also correlate to a change in volume? Oh wow it does doesn't it! and since its inversely proportional to your volume, as our volume decreases our density is going to increase and thus you sink. These simple calculations suggest that free divers might approach or exceed neutral buoyancy due to lung compression; at the least, their buoyancy would be significantly reduced, however this doesn't take into account v(i) or D(i) at sea level, full lungs, partially full lungs what have you, any way that is irrelevant to this, therefore free divers do lose their buoyancy due to an increase in overall density, be it however small.

    • @nicojansenvanvuuren2745
      @nicojansenvanvuuren2745 9 лет назад +2

      Mk2Brett Well aren't you quick on your horse. Thanks for the initial explanation. I am a diver, so I understand quite enough about buoyancy to know the effects of pressure on your body, volume, mass (more on my stupid asking in a bit). rnordquest Was simply pointing out that which you failed to include in your initial comment: That your effective density increases due to compression of air in your lungs. So no need for such ridicule - it did seem as though you were saying the body can compress. rnordquest If I may point this out though, if I exhale I too would sink, quite quickly in fact, but I wouldn't have air left to stay down that long now would I ;P
      As for my asking in the first place (whilst claiming I know enough about buoyancy)...It may have been a bit late in the evening when watching this and I failed to notice the depth of that pool. Seems quite deep @1:07, about 5 metres + it looks like? My question was in reference to staying down at shallow depths, which I find quite difficult to do...for a skinny person at least.

    • @Primalxbeast
      @Primalxbeast 8 лет назад +1

      +Mk2Brett Maybe that works if you're a guy with lots of muscle and like no fat, but I always had to wear a weight belt when I went skin diving, or I'd just bob to the top. Large boobs float regardless of how deep you dive and women have less muscle and more sub-cutaneous fat. I needed far less weight skin diving than SCUBA diving, but I still need around 6lbs to stay down.

    Great advice above, thanks for posting it! Surfers know better than anyone, I think, about wave sets and rip tides, because they're out there every day. But every year there are lives lost because people do not know to respect the ocean like they should. There are special vests now, with CO2 cartridges that can go off and push you up through the mass of water to the top. We know of guys who wear these vests, when they are surfing the giant waves in those fairly unknown giant wave areas all over the world. It can really pay off, as with every few sets of waves in the ocean, there IS going to be a wave that's bigger than the previous ones, sometimes called a rogue wave. Never have anything but a huge respect for the ocean. It can do you in quite quickly if you don't know what to expect and know HOW to deal with it!

    That's how I used to train I had a pool in the backyard in Huntington Beach and I would challenge myself swimming underwater back and forth to see how many laps I could make holding my breath and then take it further by almost passing out but making that extra lap it works very well I only got held down once where it scared me other than that I was like a fish.

      I've only just gotten into body boarding, hopefully surfing when i get the hang of it. I've been asking around but haven't gotten a legit answer: Is there any exercises that can improve the time you can hold your breath?

  • @fazerusher1285
    @fazerusher1285 7 лет назад

    For my first time getting hit by a big wave I literally shat myself but the second time I was held down then I start flipping and then went back up to surface. But my friend teached me what to do when there's a big wave. Don't run away and just turn around with your back facing the wave and hold ur breath until the wave comes , it sometimes works but mostly it works. And it feels like jumping in slowmotion

    All in your body's ability to utilize oxygen efficiently. Especially as the heart rate goes up, or exertion, uses it up faster.

  • @conocosz
    @conocosz 7 лет назад +5

    I always thought that when you get whipped from a big wave, you have to relax, and let the water calm down before going to the surface because if you fight against the wave, you're going to exhaust yourself and then likely running out of air before the wave settles down, which allows you to get to the surface?

    • @TheMrFrontera
      @TheMrFrontera 7 лет назад

      Yeah i would agree with you. I've surfed 20ft wedge and 20ft pipeline and always have done that. The only thing when you're surfing big waves with shallow waters is that you want to protect your head. Only time you really want to struggle to get to the surface is if you're running out of air, but i would say 98% of the time you know when youre going to wipe out or get eaten by a wave and can take a big gasp of air before going down. But maybe this is for the 2% of times where you eat it and don't have much oxygen left in you

    • @conocosz
      @conocosz 7 лет назад

      Pretty sure anyone who gets hit by a big wave would know that they did, and it would be second nature for them to get a decent amount of hair before plunging below, since they likely have done some work with smaller waves otherwise it'd be insane to tackle a double overhead while a beginner. Also the protecting head part is mainly concern for your board hitting you as waves of that size don't exactly show up in shallower waters.
