Zylo, Domingo, and Guntz deserve to be higher. Zylo has high mobility, good on terrain, and has very high attack despite no weapon. Domingo has very high survivability, very high mp, strong magic, and he flies. Give guntz a mobility upgrade and he has no flaws. He's good on terrain and has high overall stats.

Zylo is a beast! ... if you get lucky and get attack boosts every level. If you don't get those, he really struggles to do damage. He's not bad, bc he's still moving fast and very bulky but he isn't the best unless he gets his attack up

    • @ivangasparevic1727
      @ivangasparevic1727 2 года назад +6

I made at least ten playthroughs. And I think this is a very bad ranking list. Zylo is one of the best. And you can't compare Earnest and Vankar. Earnest and Arthur are the best knights in the game. It's a RPG, a bit of grinding is necessary. Domingo is the best magic user.

    • @Jayce_Alexander
      @Jayce_Alexander 2 года назад

@@ivangasparevic1727 Grinding is only necessary if you want to optimize your team. I usually go for promotion af level 15 to 20 (depending on the character), and if you do that the tier list would look very different. But if you promote at level 10 and you minimize grinding, as he did for this list, I can see why he makes most of the choices he makes here.

Freaking love this game. Easily my most replayed game in my life of gaming. That said I picked this video up in a time that I couldn't sit down and listen to the full 1 hour 14 minutes so I skipped to the end to see where you ranked everyone and wow, gotta say it's cool to see how differently people see these units. I think it also highlights different play styles. A tier list of characters from start to finish of the game with no egress grinding is going to look *very* different than a min-max game of bringing out each characters maximum potential. I hope to be able to come back this when I can watch the whole thing and get more context on why you rated the units the way you did.
I'm surprised you ranked Balb/Amon very high. You even have Balb as your avatar. In a min-max game, I'd probably rank Balb F-tier. He's only useful for his high mobility to grab chests way off the side of a map. Mediocre attack, Mediocre defense, Mediocre HP, and sacrificing range for this mobility (a sword user) he's just very lackluster. His mobility can get him in a lot of trouble too by overextending and his mediocre defenses make that a liability so in a lot of situations you aren't even using his mobility except on certain maps where he can remain close to your team and occupy squares that only flying units can occupy. But if my reasoning for using a flying unit is to keep them close to the team and make better use of the terrain to improve positioning then any flier would do the trick, and I'd always rather have Kokichi who can capitalize his flying mobility by being able to equip ranged spears which allow him to attack from many angles from a place of safety.
Also in a min-max game your bottom of the barrel shoot straight to S-tier. Adam, Bleu, Arthur - all power houses. But you have to give them the time to grow by getting them to level 20 before promotion and then when they get to about level 15 after promotion is when they start to really surpass the other units. I also gotta throw out there that a max level Adam who has his laser crit animation is probably the coolest attack animation in the game. But I think Bleu might be the best character in the entire game when leveled. High HP, High ATK, High DEF, great mobility and flying...he has nearly everything.
Also surprised to see Zylo in B-tier in any kind of list. He's amazingly powerful in almost every part of the game. He's the weakest from levels 1-8 after promotion but he scales fast, and it's honestly not that long of a wait to get a lot of value back out of him if you can stick out just of a few levels of being a little weak.
Lastly it's weird to see Anri at S-tier but Domingo at B tier. Domingo is basically Anri except he flies and has beastly defense. He's just a straight upgrade, and he trades Blaze 2 for Boost which I think gives him better utility. You just get him later in the game and takes a just a bit of grinding to get him good but he doesn't take much compared to others like Adam or Bleu.
Anyways these are just my opinions and I enjoyed looking at yours (and hope to hear them later) and I'm glad others love this old game enough to create content like this for it. Your tier list looks like a good list if you didn't plan on grinding any fights and wanted to do a straight forward play through.

I was entirely expecting you to say "lol jk, bros, these guys are trash" and move them down to C(balbaroy) and D(amon). Perhaps it's just playstyle, but it's interesting to see how other humans enjoy the same game. To me, yea they're unaffected by terrain, but their attack is just good, and their defense is low enough that if you send them off to kill a baddie far away solo, they're unlikely to survive. I'll use Balb for a couple battles until better alternatives are presented. It's been quite awhile since I've played through this game, just going off of memory, but I just don't remember using them much.

  • @1234luf

    Nitpicking:
    1. You stated Diane and Hans are the same, but Diane slightly easier to raise. Therefore she should be ahead of Hans in C tier
    2. Everyone can agree with Musashi being so great, including yourself, yet you placed him at the bottom of S tier...
    3. Pelle has the same mobility weakness of a knight, so at best he's A tier since he's flawed and not suitable for every map. Some of the knight could grow stats can exceed Pelle, so for him to be 2 tiers above is a bit much. Mae and Earnest in particular comes to mind, and it is usually before end game.
    4. Guntz is weak to magic because of low health as well as poor movement. Any other melee in B tier isn't really lacking in attack/defense in any significant way. I dare say he's C tier.
    5. Domingo is great for chip damage. He doesn't have to oneshot enemies to be useful. Floating, durable, easy to level, easy to use and doesn't have to be reserved on casting . Judge him as a support hero instead of a mage and he's A tier.
    6. Alef doesn't require grinding as bolting large number of enemies will give her plenty of experience. Just killing in one hit isn't the only merit of a mage. Softening the enemy for your frontline heroes to finish off is very effective. And if you do raise her, it's undeniable she hits the hardest single target as a mage. At least B tier, but really an under rated S tier.
    7. I like Bleu too, but he's got the same grinding problems as Adam and Arthur, they all really should be D tier.
    8. I know you like your Birdmen, but really? Not enough Swords to go around, so assuming they have the Katana when it belongs to Musashi is unreasonable. They are great, but A tier for Barb and B tier for Amon. Amon certainly has less attack in every playthrough I've done... though doomblade can oneshot despite the lower attack sometimes.

Guntz's movement isn't slowed down by terrain effects at all (although he's obviously still a ground unit so can't cross mountain ranges, water etc). So give him the mobility ring and it'll not only solve his mobility problems, but he actually becomes your most reliably fast moving unit in the game that isn't a flier, but with a really high attack and defense. That way he becomes one of the units you can use to easily rush those wide open maps with lots of hills, desert, woodlands, etc.
      Easy A-tier for me.

What an interesting video! I don't believe I've ever played Shining Force with no grinding whatsoever--the fact that you're given "grind magic" on your hero from the very start of the game, combined with the fact that you're auto-Egressed out of the fight whenever you lose means the penalty for losing effectively incorporates whatever fighting you did *as* grinding. You'd really have to be going out of your way to have a true no-grinding run in this game!
Since I've never played the game this way, I don't think I have a good basis for disputing most of your rankings--pretty much all of the coolest characters do require babying to reach their full potential. I am still a little surprised at how low you stuck Domingo, though, given where you placed Balbaroy and Amon! Domingo flies, bypasses armor even with his low-level ice magic, and can become a flying fortress of icy AOE death with a bit of effort. Most importantly, though: the AI positively *hates* Domingo. It will oftentimes prioritize directing attacks at him over even Max--even when those attacks will deal Domingo 1 damage! Even if he didn't have ice magic, this alone would make him incredibly useful.

Funny enough, having played in a similar style to what he describes here, Domingo is my biggest dispute for me as well. Partly because of the baiting and his flexible positioning, like you said, and partly because even Anri didn't reach freeze 4 for me by end game, which eliminates her big advantage over Domingo.
I think it is worth trying to play a game like this though, at least once. One nice thing about Shining Force is that most of the characters are designed to favor a number of different play styles, and you can find value in characters you may have overlooked challenging yourself to play without grinding, or with other restrictions. Especially for the game's age I think it speaks well for how intentionally designed Shining Force came out.

Kokichi is worlds above and beyond both of the birds, yet you ranked him lower. I have no idea what you're talking about with Zylo petering off, I do not know how many times I've seen +7 attack level ups with Zylo post-promotion almost every level up he's gaining 5-7 he is easily S tier. Ken and Mae are both ranked too high, they are carried by their class in which any Knight is serviceable, but they are both on the lower end of the spectrum. Domingo is a super-tank of a mage, floaty, great unit to lure as he has double priority boosts on enemy targeting being both a floaty and a mage, he's arguably more survivable than Anri while having the same core spell in the form of Freeze 4, he's easily an S tier unit. Earnest and Vankar should outrank Ken and Mae which I believe you are blinded in their ranking with nostalgia, they are carried by their class yes, as they are not Pelle level of good, but they are better than the act 1 flunkies of their race, you could just swap them in placements with Ken/Mae and it would make more sense. The elven archers in SF1 were shafted so terribly that you're lucky to see +5 attack growth from their baseline throughout your entire playthrough, they both belong in D tier. The only real issue holding Bleu back is how late in the game you get him, completely underlevelled and in dire need of babying to catch him up to the rest of the force. I've played a modded version of the game in which you can get him at level 1 and soloed the entire game with him alone, if you put any time into him he's easily A-S tier, but if you're just playing the game at a natural pace he's a D tier unit. To only have one D-tier unit on your list I feel you've overestimated too many units in the game, simply due to the fact that the game is easy, but the worst offending things I saw on the list were the placements of the birds, Zylo, and Domingo.

This is a pretty good tier list. Coming from the Fire Emblem world, it's hard to find discussion on RUclips about the old Shining Force games that try and take into account how effective units are if you try to play in a skilled, fast, efficient way.
I do have some comments and questions (as everyone does) having recently revisited the first game.
    1. I do feel Tao is a better mage than Anri, and I would probably drop Anri to A. This may be a consequence of how I played, but with Tao grabbing Blaze 4 so quickly, and the bird men and centaurs dominating the mid game, it's hard for me to get her the experience she requires to grab Freeze 4 before the game ends without grinding/repeating levels. You say that if you use Tao and Anri equally Anri will grow fine, but level to level Tao is the more effective fighter with better spells for most of the game. Where Anri is often chipping, Tao is killing. So instead of staying similar leveled, Tao is often pulling ahead instead. I don't see how to use them equally without essentially babying Anri. Thankfully Freeze 3 is still very good for its power and 2-3 range, and often good enough with smart positioning for all the spell casters to kill those late game Chimeras and such. But Freeze 4 is too far off in my opinion. And I think that hurts her, comparatively.
    2. Similarly I would move Domingo to A. He's a tanky, hovering Anri that has the downside of an even later Freeze 4. But level to level he is easier to use, especially in terrain maps, and he has a tendency to predictably yoink enemies toward him that usually do little damage to him physically if necessary. I do agree he doesn't match the birds for most of the game though offensively.
    3. I feel like Max should be lowered to B. As you noted, he has a sketchy mid game, but more than that because the levels end when he dies, he can't pull off sacrifice tactics if necessary. It's not even just about him playing more safely - though that is an issue - it's that he fundamentally lacks a powerful option for baiting and eliminating enemies where you can let a unit or two die for the greater good! And of course some of his best tools are contested, so there is more opportunity cost for him using his best weapons. It's hard for me to see ranking him sharing a rank with any of the A and S characters, or even beating most of the centaurs. But he is strong in the early game and has good growths and options, so I can't lower him more than that.
    4. Is there a reason Amon is a rank below Balbaroy? Balbaroy is better, which means there is opportunity cost for Amon grabbing the best limited tools, but together they still can wreck mid game maps with power ring abuse and later strong swords. That and if for some reason Balbaroy didn't exist she can do basically all the things he can do as well. They don't feel *that* different. My top 5 S units would probably be Tao, Balbaroy, Amon, Pelle, and Musashi (if we're only ranking on performance when they're around and not the whole game, otherwise he would drop).

Great video! I really enjoyed seeing someone else's educated opinions of the characters after having replayed this game so many times as a kid. Very interesting what you said about Pelle, as I never really played him since I always assumed that he was going to be just like all the other fairly useless knights that you get around the same time as him and was sorta scared off from picking him up since he was so low leveled. I'll definitely have to take the time and use him in the future. Also, one thing I think I've noticed is that usually Gort is more consistent at hitting enemies than Luke is; I might've just been imagining things, but I swear I remember Luke missing way more than Gort did most of the time for some reason.

@@ablemayble214 oh I know what he's capable of, but he has drawbacks that keep him out of S Tier. There's also the fact that he can't fly over every single terrain unlike the other flying units that can fly over more than Domingo can, which makes him a floating unit and not a flying unit. I appreciate the angle you take here re: a broader view of character utility but disagree with most of the list 😆. Bleu and Arthur are so easy to level up. The rougher levels with Arthur you have no choice but to have him on the force. Put the power ring on him then do just a little grinding (1) at the first Bustoke battle then (2) at the Balbazak battle. Never promote him before 20, he’ll be a beast already by then.
I think you also underestimate the utility of Arthur being able to finish off high evasion enemies with those little spells of his.
For Bleu, you spend a bit of time grinding just at the first part of the Kane battle with egress, and then he becomes the best character in the game IMO, put the mobility ring on him and he’s the Peter of SF1. Worth it IMO.

  • @volvosteffe
    @volvosteffe 3 года назад +5

Bleu is easily A tier for me. You must've been really unlucky in your grind with him. But on al my 10+ playthroughs of the game, he has the highest stats of all characters. And the only thing that doesn't make him an s tier, is that you need to put in a small grind to get him started, before he makes it on his own. He will esentially make all other flying characters obsolete since he can do alone, what you need3 of 4 other characters to do combined. He's a flyer, a tank, can take a lot of magic damage and one shot everything except bosses. When looking at all the virtues you get with Blue, compared to the small time investment on the initial grind, he definitely places in the a tier. This is of course my opinion and I'm not expecting a revamped tier list or anything. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

I've only played through the game once but I'm surprised Bleu was ranked so high. Bleu takes a looooooooong time to be of any value. I played the game restricting myself from ever changing any characters equipment. Meaning early units were stuck with the weakest weapons forever. In such a play style most units weren't viable for endgame, whereas things like Zylo, Bleu and Adam were my theoretically valuable units since they didn't use weapons. Adam is entirely useless, if you're strong enough to get to him, you're strong enough to push to the end. Similar with Bleu, sure the baby dragon comes a bit earlier and isn't as bad, but he's not useful either since it's quicker to just keep progressing than grinding Bleu. If you like to use him, yeah he can get good stats and has good attributes, but regarding efficient play he's scraping the bottom of the barrel in worth.

I appreciate the video man. This is obviously a ranking based off a zero or very minimal grinding run. With that being the case I still can't understand why the bird units are ranked so highly. The only thing they have going for the is movement but the attack, defense and HP they bring to the table are generally worse than all other melee units. How do you use them that makes you rank them so high? At least for myself I'd take almost any other melee unit than them in a zero grinding playthough and that would be even more true if I'm going to grind up my units in a playthough. Whenever I used them they always felt underpowered and the flight benefit they have at least for me couldn't make up for the fact that if they don't kill the target that would have to have been weakened for them in the first place, they take so much damage and if they flew ahead to attack someone now they are likely alone and going to be demolished with the lacking survivability they offer.

His magic does suffer, but when I played this game as a kid - that was never my primary use for Domingo. I used him to draw enemies and tank hits, up until the endgame. He'd save the hero in many, many battles, and I think that use is worth considering. By the time you get to endgame and he's no longer as comparatively tanky, he has enough magic to still be useful. I never had much luck with the birdmen as a kid either, though when I've gone back to the game later I reluctantly agree they can be useful.

Just finished playing through (again) and my personal ranking just based on straight play, no grinding, promoting at level 10?
    30: Jogurt: Duh! Grade F
29: Adam: He comes along FAR too late in the game, near the very end of chapter 7 of 8 and there just aren't enough battles left in the game to bring him up to speed unless you plan on doing battles over. Grade F
28: Alef: She would be awesome but like Adam and Torasu, she suffers from late arrival time and her Bolt spells while cool looking eat up too much magic and you will have to redo battles to get her up to snuff if you want her to be able to do more than 2 Bolt attacks. Grade D
27: Hans. Hans is good for the first 3 or 4 battles but by the time Zombies start showing up, his wooden arrows become useless. He's extremely weak when it comes to gaining stats on level ups and one time I did play through the whole game with just the original 12 and he was somewhat better by end game when you give him the buster shot but hits effectiveness is almost completely dependent on buying him the updated ammunition. Diane and Lyle on the other hand see stat growth all around while Hans just gets 1 or 2 speed per level and he STILL tends to miss flying targets! Grade D
26: Arthur. Had Arthur all the way to Dark Dragon. Promoted level 7, and he was hopelessly outclassed mostly with the power spear as I gave the Valkyrie to Ken who was always a near front line guy while Arthur was just there doing chip damage. Arthur's terrible HP stats and defense makes it almost suicidal to make him a lancer so making him a spear man is more logical. His stat growth is very slow and he needs a lot of babying to get to where he is competent. Too much trouble by end game when your bruisers are all hitting for 20-60 damage. Grade D
25: Gong. Another healer in the party and he does decent damage early on but his stats just didn't grow like Lowe and Khris. Once your front liners can start taking punches and brushing them off you don't really need 3 healers in the group. Grade D
24: Bleu. Another character that needs babying (no pun intended) I've used him in the past and got him up to impressive levels post promotion but again, too much trouble. Grade D
23: Torasu: Another late arrival who needs a lot of work but he does come with Aura. That's good if your guys are in a crowd and they get multi hit by magic attacks. Grade D
22: Amon. Flying allies are cool, but her attacks are very weak and She and Balbaroy tend to get taken out almost immediately by Pegasus Knights or even a Priests walking stick! Lame! Grade C
21: Balbaroy: See above. Both bird warriors suffer from the long stretch of NOT getting any sword upgrades to keep pace and then once you his Pao Prairie, the game starts throwing you sword upgrades after almost every battle! Feels like the game developers didn't balance that part out. Max for sure could have used a sword upgrade after battle #3 or #4. Grade C
20: Ernest: One of the coolest looking knights, but he is always just kinda there. Decent stats with each level up but again, you probably have better knights from earlier in the game. Grade C
19: Kokichi: Needs help to get going but if you keep on leveling he becomes the best flyer in the game IMHO (aside from Domingo). Or at the very least the most helpful where Bleu and the birds are out there hitting people for 1 piddly point of damage. Grade C
18: Vankar: Gets kind of a bad rap as most people are fine with Mae and Pelle and or Ken by the time he shows up, but I have seen this guy get some pretty impressive stats with each level. Gaining anywhere from 2-5 across the board on each level up isn't something to scoff at! Grade B
17: Mae: She looks cool, but my main beef with Mae is that while her defense is good, she has low HP so you gotta keep an eye on her. Also, she seems to be the slowest of the knights and misses her targets ALOT. Don't bother sending her after Giant Bats because the game just laughs at you! Grade B
16: Hanzou: I know, shocking right? Next to Musashi he is the best of the late arrivals and does good damage. Never had much luck with his Desoul spell and he is prone to missing targets. Grade B
15: Anri: Wish they started her with level 1 Freeze. Instead they make you work for it. Takes her awhile to get going but she is good by end game. Grade B
14: Guntz: Give him a mobility ring or turbo pepper so he doesn't get left behind. Once he gets promoted and is given top of the line lances, he can literally tank just about anybody not using magic. Grade B
13: Diane: Gets impressive stat boosts like defense and HP that Hans never seems to get and she even gains attack damage to make her ammo do more damage. Grade B
12: Lowe: A fine starting healer and he usually stays in my group past the halfway point. I find him more capable in a fight than Gong actually. Better healing spell growth too. Grade B
11: Musashi: Absolute beast, only held back by mobility. He's another guy the baddies like to target so if you beef up his defense he can shrug off most attacks. Grade B
10: Luke: Solid front liner, is prone to missing flying targets but end game with an Atlas he will be one shotting Torch Eyes! Grade A
9: Lyle: Best ranged fighter and I like him for taking out Torch Eyes from a safe distance. Gets some good stats once he is Level 15 promoted. Grade A
8: Domingo: Can fly, use magic, and high defense which makes him good as a decoy to allow your weaker guys to get easy exp while the enemy picks on him. Grade A
7: Ken: Horribly underrated by many gamers. Works better as a spear man because his defense isn't great but once you promote him and give him the Valkyrie he starts doing crazy damage and leveling quickly. Around promotion level 15 I have seen him get 2-5 attack, 5-7 defense and 2-7 HP. Keep in behind or along side Max as a supporter. Grade A
6: Khris: My favorite healer, just because she has a knack for hitting those pesky flying bats that everybody else is prone to missing. Also gets good stat growth post promotion. She is usually my end game healer. Grade A
5: Pelle: Best knight hands down. Gains levels quickly and quickly becomes a new favorite for the front lines. Grade A
4: Zylo: Tends to suck early on, missing targets but by promotion level 5 he starts taking off and getting great stat boosts. Becomes amazing by promotion level 20. S Tier
3: Max: Only held back from the top 2 spots by the fact that if he is knocked out, you lose the battle and he suffers early on by not getting good sword upgrades in the first half of the game. Then all of a sudden, you get to Pao Prairie and you will be giving him a new sword every 1 or 2 battles and by the time he gets the Chaos Breaker and is past promotion level 20, he can wipe the floor with a lot of opponents. Also, Max seems to get more 2 hit combos than any other character. S Tier
2: Gort: Just a beast! He will be the work horse in my group almost every time taking damage that would 1 shot many others. Gets awesome around promotion level 5 and once he has the heat axe. S Tier
1: Tao: Tao's fire magic is a must early in the game. Once she learns blaze 2 and she starts cutting enemies health by half, she gains exp quickly and most of the time she is the first one I end up promoting. Her fire magic makes her essential once the zombies start showing up in mobs. Trying to win the battle at Shade Abbey without Tao is almost impossible as everybody else's weapons are horribly weak against the zombies. S Tier
I never held out on promotion at level 20 because honestly, the game isn't THAT hard once you learn the AI's behavior.

Guntz: B- (he's actually amazing, but too slow, if you give him a mobility buff he's easily A+)
    Domingo: S
    Earnest: A
    Lyle: B
    Bleu: S
    Alef: B
Torasu: C (he's good but takes too much effort to level)
    Musashi: A-
Adam: F (same as torasu but exacerbated)
Ninja guy: never bothered with him. I think I used him for one battle, realized he was under level compared to the rest of the party and decided not to bother with him.

Solid list honestly (depending on perspective).
I’m looking at the list as how good they are by just getting them and no grind.
I like Adam, but he requires a ton of work, and when he gets promoted, his space movement goes from 5 to 4.
Same with Bleu (minus the movement drop). I do feel Bleu’s accuracy drop after being promoted.
Musashi: my favorite from ShF. I would make a S+ tier just for him. The only flaw is his space movement. Off that, you barley have to level him up to be good.
If I had to make a change, it would be for Domingo (I’d say B+/A-). I find him to be a one trick pony (just freeze and sponge up hits), but he does it so well.

How are you going to put Balbory in S tier and not Domingo? Domingo is so much easier to use, more powerful, and has way more DF. Balbory takes a bit of grinding to make good, and it isn't hard for any of the mages to grind at all.

    • @Magnus2dead
      @Magnus2dead  4 года назад +1

Although Domingo is very useful and easy to use, his magic is not very powerful until way later levels, has floating vs flying (although only occasionally hindering), and less movement. Balbaroy can hold his own from the beginning, especially abusing the power ring, and once able to obtain the sword of light and chaos breaker has unlimited magic at the same power until Domingo gets to level 27, which is a pain. Even then his attack is fantastic with those overpowered weapons. Domingo is a great character that I highly recommend but doesnt get to power of others like Tao and Anri until way late since the slowdown of experience at level 20 and the fact he needs 26 levels from the middle of the game. Not impossible at all but time consuming. All of this is also my opinion from what I have experienced, seen, and analyzed, so we can still differ based on what you have experienced or seen.

I played and loved this game back in the 90s. I played through it probably 5 times as a kid? I had 2 friends who also played it but didn't love as much as I did. There was no internet or stats to have any clue who would become what so you just had to grind and find out. No way of knowing HOW to find characters or hidden treasure either. You just LUCKED into it) Also as a kid I ALWAYS Elevated the Characters as soon as they reached lvl 10. Had no clue there was a reason not to. So potential was lost there obviously.
My first playthrough that I can recall I did no grinding because that wasn't even a concept to me at that point. I didn't understand the value of Egress yet. In MOST cases I ended up keeping the characters I started with because of comfort and connection to them. I know I was able to complete it but I think it was a last ditch effort on the final boss with very few characters remaining. Literally think it was a Last hit with min HP from Max. I was probably 12 or 13 at the time. It was GLORIOUS!
It was fun watching your tier list but it very much differed from my own thoughts (thinking back almost 25+ years ago).
I could never find a good use for either of the Birds. Even when I started to grind they just never brought value to ANY of my teams and near the last couple play throughs I would GRIND and I intentionally even grinded characters I didn't like. It's funny to see how Arthur is seen as so amazing by many when looking up Character lists where I agree completely with your own assessments. Though funny enough as much as I grinded even when I realized he was getting MP I never took him all the way. So I never saw him become a powerhouse.
I didn't find Domingo's existence until probably playthrough 3? He was a TOP favorite MUST from there on out. I only got Jogurt once and couldn't ever remember HOW I got him after that and even tried and failed to do so every play through after that.
I do think Shining Force II had a bigger spot in my heart looking back BUT SF1 was still AMAZING.
I think every play through always ended with the following Characters though as my starting lineup: Max; Luke (or Gort sometimes, both until end game when the really fun characters showed up); Tao (sometimes Anri but one or the other would go near end game); Zylo (one of the coolest characters in the game); Pelle (would replace all knights though sometimes Mae would stick around); Guntz (literal tank); Domingo (once figured out how to get him); Lyle (coolest Archer); Bleu (I mean c'mon a dragon!); Adam (again c'mon, a ROBOT!); Hanzou (again again c'mon a samurai!) ; Musashi (A DAMN NINJA?!?!). Finally I'd always sacrifice ONE of those final 4 with a Healer and typically that was Khris.
Again that was based on how I played as a kid. I do plan on playing the GBA version and see how that goes. It'll be fun revisiting. Cheers!

I'll admit I didn't listen to most of the video, mainly because I wanted to see where you put everyone. Overall, I agree. I think Domingo should be A tier in particular. An extremely tanky character who utterly destroys enemies with magic. He'd be S tier if he could also do solid damage with a standard attack. some of the characters I never recruited because I didn't know how or was unaware I could. And also knew who my favorites were. I think you're also going to have some subjective opinion simply on the basis of liking certain characters over others. Zylo is another I'd bump higher, ignoring terrain for movement is extremely useful. I enjoyed using Arthur.. I could see him where he is on your list, or MAYBE in the C tier. A little extra range damage is helpful when he learns all level 1 damage spells (blaze, bolt, freeze?) Birdman in S tier that you have was a chore so I stopped trying to use him. As for the other centaur in S tier I had invested in the rest of my team and couldn't be bothered.

Highly disagree with the Domingo placing, the dude/thing is a unit, gets nearly as tanky as Guntz, while moving more with hover, huge hp pool so he can also tank magic attacks and while I agree his freeze 4 comes along slower than you'd like his movement and high agility lets him run face first into blobs and wound the lot of them while being able to tank anything they throw back at him. Easily setting you up for easy victories. I love combining him with Max and sword of light for easy mob removal. Then he eventually gets the single target nuking potential of the other mages while losing none of his prior benefits. Also he is nice to help out newer or low leveled units if he wants to just soak dmg and play back seat with his boost spell. Make's early Arthur/Bleu/etc much more tolerable. Also as a mage he will shoot through all but his very first few levels as basically any aoe spell gives you at least 30 odd exp so as long as he's doing his part he will level fast and since there's no promotion he will never dip like many others do.

As you said Author is the best character in the game if you lv him up (he is the magickarp of the game) also S-class, keep the halbert on him. Earnest is a solid B class. I’d put Zylo and Domingo in A, and Balb, Amon, Tao and Anri are in low A/high B.
Domingo is both a flier and mage that is tanky to boot; the AI flags fliers and mages in who they will attack and Domingo is both, so it’ll draw the aggro from all enemies who can attack it(which is good since the only character enemies will prioritize over Domingo is Max). Domingo is good to draw in groups of enemies that you don’t want others to (mixture of physical and magic enemies will drain their HP quickly, but Domingo can tank them no problem). It may start off at level 1, but it’s stats aren’t as bad compared to some of your other units and you can get a lot of mileage out the levels it gets (more so than any of the other units that need levels to be good). It does fall off endgame, but that shouldn’t discount how useful it is throughout.
The above statement applies to Zylo, as well; he starts good, he maintains being good throughout.
Balb and Amon are fliers with 1-range weapons; they’re good, but not the best (I know this isn’t Fire Emblem, but there are advantages in having ranged weaponry).
Tao and Anri are low A/high B largely because of survivability; what good is killing one enemy if your mage dies during the next enemy turn.
Otherwise, I agree with where you placed most of the characters.
