  • In this interview with Derl, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, Marilyn, Derl's wife, shares her perspective on her feelings at home in this interview. This is really illuminating because it shows us how Americans, like Marilyn, thought when their friends and family were battling in Vietnam. She talks about being aware of the details of Operation Buffalo and that Derl's unit was affected, but she is unsure of Derl's status. See continues by describing how she and Derl kept in touch through letters and voice messages, which improved their spirits.
We resume with Derl reflecting on his feelings following Operation Buffalo, but also with his determination to press on despite knowing that his tour would get shorter the longer he remained in Vietnam. Derl provides an excellent insight into the thoughts and feelings of a Marine who wants to fulfill his duties and return home safely at the conclusion of his tour. We talk about Derl's arrival in the United States in early 1968 and the conclusion of his tour.
If you are interested in Derl's story stay tuned for more interviews, but you may also purchase Derl's memoir, Blood, Sweat and Honor: Memoirs of a Walking Dead Marine in Vietnam.
