The only problem we saw with them was clogged oil rings mostly due to extending the oil changes too far. If Toyota had drilled more holes in the oil ring groove the problem likely wouldn't have happened but with only a few holes they got clogged from the dirty oil and then the engine would eat oil. The ones we saw blown up had basically no oil in them because of the high consumption..."Why should I need to check my oil every time I fill up with gas"? I had one guy ask. Makes me shake my head.

1ZZ had an oil burning issue due to narrow cooling channels in the piston heads that clog up over time. This was resolved in ~2003. Its a fantastic engine and returns 32-40 mpg on the highway. The 2ZZ had large diameter cooling channels (Yamaha design) with only two minor issues - failing lift bolts (relatively easy and cheap repair) and oil starvation in high G turns (track days) - resolved by using a baffled oil pan. I drove my 1ZZ for +13 years before oil burning became an issue. Replaced with a 2ZZ. Fantastic car at 2400lbs that handles great.

You can still buy the sunfire or cavalier 2.2l, 2 4l, z24 package way cheaper than the toyota and the gm where way more reliable. Easy work on, cheaper to fix. The main problem with the 2.2l, 2.4l , z24 models where weak automatic transmissions so get a manual, and headgaskets. But the headgaskets were extremely easy fix in under an hour cost less than $100 to do it yourself .

Well, I would agree with you, but I have a 2003 MR2 Spyder with the 1ZZ in it and that exact scenario happened to me hahaha. I took a turn pretty hard, nothing crazy quite honestly, but a spirited turn and I imagine all the oil sloshed to the side, the engine picked up air, and when I straightened the wheel out it was knocking. I now plan on swapping in a built/modernized 2ZZ as a replacement engine just for that more horsepower and better sound. Also the 1ZZ does LOOOOVE to burn oil. Mine had changes every 1000-3000 miles from new essentially but still burnt oil at 142k. Just the name of the game with these Toyota 4 cylinders I guess!

Toyota should abandon BMW (bad motor wreck) and bring back the Supra with a (Toyota engine). Either 2.8 or 3.5L. 6 speed manual transmission without that horrible double clutch. With the option to get those with the dependable Aisen automatic transmissions.

NUH uh. 2zz is the better and more reliable motor. 1zz suffered from so many problems and every single one munches on oil. 2zz is great motor facelift 2zz has only one issue and that’s the oil pan as mentioned.

20+ years and Sabaru still don’t figure out how not to blow up motors! Toyota is really going the wrong way, who needs a 4WD sports car? I think GR Corolla is enough for the 4WD crowd. They will make it too expensive and it will not do well, can already see it being a disaster!

Had that exact same car. White and everything. Bought it in Toronto with 17k km on it. Was a very decent car. Not fast by any stretch, but fun to drive. It was the GT. I never heard that the GT-S had major engine problems. Glad I didn’t get one.

Yes, the Honda Fit hatchback is very convenient to put allot of stuff in. Unfortunately, Honda stop selling it in the USA. Small cars don't sell as well in USA and so manufactures have stop making them for USA
