Per the ad: YO, ADAM'S GOT MOVES!
Um, fellas...Batman did used to kill. His original stories had him using guns too. This Batman is based on those stories. The slightly unhinged, maladjusted Bruce who went out at night in a Bat costume and killed people.
There was one issue where he hanged a mentally disabled criminal from his Batwing and said "Maybe it's for the best." He also, before it got retconned, left KGBeast to die in the sewers of Gotham by barricading him in a room so he'd starve to death.
So, yeah. Keaton is the only actor to play killer Batman. Before he got changed into the no guns, no killing Batman we know today.
Plus The original Batman was a rip off of The Shadow a far more popular pulp and radio hero of the time. Batman's very first appearance was a slightly tweaked copy of a shadow story called The Partners of Peril.
As far as I remember, the first villain to "survive" was actually the Joker, who in the original story arch was killed but was so popular they made him survive.
You mean he was the first actor to play killer Batman? Batman in BvS kills lol
Keaton Batman was forced to retire because Gotham became too SAFE, that's what happens when you put criminals down when they first emerge.
Eh, his eagerness to kill is vastly exaggerated. OG Batman rarely killed deliberately - a lot of villains were depicted as dying horribly, but it was generally not because Batman did it intentionally. And the guns thing was (WW2 propaganda comics aside) against the Monk, who was to all appearances a vampire (he wasn't, but...).
This is something most people miss about Vicky Vale's weight.
He knows what his grapnel launcher can handle, and lifting both of them easily is borderline.
He asks her weight because if shes around 120 or so (made up numbers) then her plus his 200 or so fully armored will work.
But it you notice, it didnt work. They got stuck half way up. He wanted her to get to safety so he said "see that thing on my belt... grab it and whatever you do, don't let go"... he was then unhooked, and fell, and she ascended very fast the rest of the way because his weight didn't add to the total that was outside the specs of the launcher.
If he knew she was actually about 130 he wouldn't have taken that course of action, but would have escaped another way.
His comment "you weigh a lottke more than 108" wasnt fat shaming her, he didnt care about it esthetically, he was ribbing her because she LIED about it, in an emergency, thus nearly getting them both killed. But she saved him with the camera flash, so its ok in the end.
Exactly. Women were taught to lie about their weight and age all the time. It’s accurate to the time when this was filmed.
Why did she lie about her weight? Because there is societal pressure on her to be thin? From media like movies that declare women’s ideal weight is around 100 pounds?
And they wrote the character to be so concerned with this as to risk their life in an emergency situation?
And both of those explanations are fine? No, they’re not.
@@hectorminator yup... but he didn't put that pressure on. They're blaming Batman for fat shaming. They got it backwards. He doesn't care. He just wants the grapple ascender to work.
@@SE-gs6gd correct, so it’s weird for this movie to do that, right??
It's dated and gross. Regardless of the in-universe context, the way it is written, acted, and it's impact cannot be denied. These tropes were/are toxic. We've learned so much since then and I don't think (or I'd like to think) that there wasn't malice on the filmmakers parts.
Still a fun movie and doesn't undermine the overall quality. I am glad they talked about it and acknowledged it during their watch.
I remember in the theatre when Keaton says "I am Batman" in that opening scene, you couldn't hear the dialogue for a couple of minutes due to the cheering.
Pure classic. The movie that got me into comics and superheroes as a whole.
I like the fact that in this reality, Joker hates Batman because he stole all his press😂
Honestly that's pretty on brand for the Joker in general.
That and he blames Batman for his disfigurement, this Joker is a complete narcissist and lunatic, he's also a great strategist and easily poisoned Gothamites twice.
It’s crazy to think now but back when the movie was being made the producers didn’t want Danny Elfman working on the score at all as they wanted Prince to compose it. Tim Burton brought Danny Elfman in to play the opening credits score for the producers and once they heard it they brought him back in for the score and then got Prince to write songs for the movie. One of the most iconic movie scores, at one point, almost never got created!
This guy actually said "I do not like the line where Batman asks her how much do you weigh" like really dude?
Rite 🙄🤦🏾♂
Danny Elfman composed the main theme for the Main Intro of Batman: The Animated Series, but due to schedules issues, he wasn't able to compose for the rest of the series.
Shirley Walker took his place as the main composer and crafted the second theme which I think is a Masterpiece. 😁
Did you know that Shirley Walker was the orchestra conductor on Batman 89 for Elfman? And that Shirley Walker was the main composer on the 90s The Flash series starring John Wesley Shipp, which Danny Elfman did the main theme for? 😄
@@DCComicsGamer yeah, she was amazing
Joker has a Glasgow smile, so it’s meant to look off putting whenever he isn’t actually smiling, especially during that scene when he has no makeup on.
opening day of Bat-mania was unforgettable. never to this day have i seen a theater so packed but it was a different time back then, but even the isles were completely filled shoulder to shoulder with people sitting on the floor all the way up and down the theater. What an incredible theater experience :D
I had the same experience. I was 11 years old in 1989 when this came out. Me and my parents went to the opening Friday night showing, and I had never seen a theater lobby so packed (shoulder to shoulder). The buzz of excitement and anticipation was off the charts. Every seat was filled there where people who stood in the back of the theater to watch, it was incredible. This movie truly felt like an event when it came out.
yeah, I remember it being huge. I don't think there were people who "didn't know who Batman was" because the TV show had been so big. There had also been Justice League cartoons. Batman was a big draw, but this was such a different take on it compared to the TV show and cartoons that if you didn't read the comics it would have seemed brand new and different.
Truly the biggest crime of Batman Forever was robbing us of having Billy Dee Williams as Two Face. I don’t hate Tommy Lee Jones as a actor, but man, he somehow out goofied 90’s JIM CARREY. It would’ve been nice if Harvey was grounded and serious to balance out Riddler, and Billy Dee could’ve helped with that.
But have we ever seen Billy D ever play a character like that??? I've only ever seen him being basically Lando Calrisin from Star Wars. He always is just a smooth, suave man
We do finally get billy d Williams as two-face in the Lego Batman movie
The Burton/Keaton Batman films will always be my favorite. The acting, the writing, the sets, the music - there's so much sheer personality to these classics.
My favorite Catwoman, too
Absolutely!
The 108 lbs comment was because she had to weigh just over that since their lift was halted and Batman had to let go. I assume they based the line of Basinger's weight. That was her size, not a comment on societal views.
It’s absolutely a comment on societal views.
@@SE-gs6gd 👍🏽
💯
Batman killed a lot of bad guys in the early days of the comic. The no-kill thing came a LOT later.
Batman used to kill and use guns even in his original iteration..
Jokers makeup was and is incredible guys.
I can't believe Hector talked over the Descent into Darkness scene to make a point about the 108 lb comment. Dude... Why?
I can’t believe you made this comment to try and diminish a point about sexism in entertainment. Dude… why?
This year I watched a silent cut of the movie. The entire thing was edited to make it look and feel like a 1920's German expressionist era flick. It works very damn well. Burton really knows how to do visual story telling.
Where can one find said version?
I need to see this!, I used to turn my tv to b&w settings to watch it like an old 40's movie, that also worked too. It worked with The Rocketeer as well.
I always thought he had paint on the handkerchief too. I learned something new!
Ok Adam needs to meet Up with the Blindwave crew and do some Saber dueling with those epic moves.
This is my favorite movie of all time. Michael Keaton will always be my favorite live action Batman of all time. The music by Danny Elfman is iconic.
*starts loudly singing the 1989 Batman theme*
Da-na-na-NA-na!
Food for thought: For the flashback of the Wayne murders, it’s from Bruce’s memory as a child. He’s a false narrator in that moment. While it could’ve been Jack who killed his parents, there’s also the ambiguity that Bruce is projecting his recent experience with Joker onto that memory.
i always thought that the memory was real and accurate (saw this when i was 7, didn't know any of this stuff), but i like your theory as a way to make Joker not the actual murderer....and it makes sense
i like the theory, it makes sense, personally though, i have no issue with Joker creating Batman, whether either knows it or not
@@terririnella4032 I think they want us to believe Joker really did kill the Waynes, and I’m totally okay with that for this Batman. My theory to justify how there’s still room for interpretation only came to me while watching this reaction.
Batman has killed people in the comics and he carried a gun. He also tortured KGB Beast. I agree that killing is horrible thing. But this is a dark character who is breaking the law/s. Assault, Aggravated Assault, Child Endangerment, Murder, Unregistered Firearm, Vigilantism just to start.
Hector, do you enjoy being the “Uhm, actually… fun fact!🤓”Guy?
Just in time for the weekend boys! I appreciate it! Btw 1989 was a great year. Lol
I remember the critics’ reviews when this movie was released in 1989, and the majority of them were of the general theme of “Batman Restored To Glory”. Much was made of the departure from the campy 60’s TV show, and the “darker, more intense” vision. Major accolades to the genius Oscar-winning production designer on this movie, Anton Furst, who tragically took his own life less than 3 years after its release.
I’ve never watched this film in black and white, but I’d love to see a B&W version to accentuate that film noir lighting.
I think Adam could take out a few Jedi with those moves.
Judging by the attack on the temple in Mando, he could take it out single handedly
You missed the point of the weight comment. The grapling hook could only carry a certain amount of weight. Plus it ended up being a funny little joke.
They need to remember that Batman, to the general public at that time, was from the 1960s campy TV show.
(Maybe they can watch the 1966 movie as well.)
The movie being dark and killing bad guys was in part to break that mental image that people had at the time.
Silver-age Batman carried and used guns. The Comic Code Authority in the 1950s cracked down on violence and sexuality in comic books, so that helped push Batman into the "no guns" direction.
(The CCA also had quaint morality codes. "Crimes shall never be presented in such a way as to create sympathy for the criminal, to promote distrust of the forces of law and justice, or to inspire others with a desire to imitate criminals.")
As a fun aside, look up the old Black20 video "Battle of the Batmans". (Used footage from the Burton films through the first Nolan film.)
I think you meant 'Golden Age Batman used guns'; the Silver Age didn't start until the 60s, after the Code was created.
@@Heritage367 Good point. That's what I get for skimming too many articles and getting them confused.
It did lead me to the sacomics blogspot article "Batman and Guns", where the author tried to find all examples (any age) of Batman with a gun. (Quite a few are cover art that have nothing to do with the book itself, but not all.)
Whooo hooo! Keaton’s Batman 🥰
You guys are so wrong and keep relying on todays movies and cinematography, its 1989 how do you make a movie based on a character that went through multiple iterations comics and other wise. Put yourself in 1989….. love you all but your arguing todays point and not then…….
I just kinda want to be in the room and make my arguments, sorry not sorry lol
Exactly, Burton actually came on to the project in 1985 and at that point the characterization of Batman within the 46 of comics was all over the place. Burton and Sam Hamm even commented on this at the time. So it’s funny that Batman fans want to act like there was a definitive version that the filmmakers failed to adapt when that wasn’t the case at all.
With regard to the question of Agustin's opinion of Jack being the one who killed Bruce's parents... I had a similar feel to the scene in the 3-hour TV cut of "Superman: The Movie" where high school Clark ran alongside the train and the little girl watching him through binoculars turned out to be Lois Lane.
That's in the theatrical cut I have
@@daryl772003 Possible! All of the clips I've seen of it on RUclips refer to it as the TV cut.
THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD
Classic super hero movie really helped shape Batman movies
Both the score and the soundtrack are so iconic. Prince did the soundtrack and I still love it to this day.
Omg love the sponsor
I found out recently that Grissom is played by the actor who plays Porkins!
My guy getting all upset about the weight comment - none of ladies were offended.
We found it hilarious!!!
Obviously she weighs more than that, but her lying about it made it too heavy for the grappling hook to hold both of them. Batman wasn’t able to adjust for the difference so they got stuck and he had to drop so she could get to safety.
Us girls were like “honey, ain’t no way that’s your weight and this is not the time for that nonsense” 😂
My uncle gave that to me as a Christmas gift when I was 9 years old ( in 1989)
I think it holds up surprisingly well, considering how old it is.
When are you guys gonna react to secret invasion
"Where does he get those wonderful toys." Yes. Great line. I just want to know why they cut out Jokers next line... "Well. Don't just stand there. GO ASK HIM!"
The script is easily found online
This is still the best Batman movie imo.
Actually, with regards to all the goons in the factory/plant, he doesn't "kill them". Rather, like the line in Nolan's Batman Begins, "I won't kill you...but I don't have to save you." The goons placed themselves in the situation where their own lives were at risk, without regard for what the ultimate end result likely meant.
He straight killed all those guys.
You can't bomb a populated place that results in several deaths and then say, "I actually didn't kill anyone!"
Today we also learned Adam escaped order 66.
It’s confirmed Adam is one with the force
I love these watch alongs! Keep em coming!
Never expect realism from Tim Burton.
Am i the only person who hates The Dark Knight Trilogy? They're just too grounded into reality for me.
And The Dark Knight Rises was fucking awful. It's one of the worse movies ever made.
Stop being an arrogant narcissistic dismissive entitled POS 😡😡🤬
In the fall, when my wife and I are driving, if there's a long pile of leaves along the side of the road, she will look at me and say, "Batman leaves?" She knows me so well. And for the two seconds it takes me to drive through them....I'M BATMAN!
Bruh, the whole point about the 108lbs thing is that she's LYING about her weight, and Batman accepts her answer, but because she actually weighs more, the "thing on his belt" isn't strong enough to carry them all the way up to the top, so he saves her by letting himself fall. When they meet back up, he says, "You way a little more than 108" because he's rightfully a little pissed that she lied about it.
Danny Elfman's Batman theme is the greatest superhero theme of all time....
YES!!
MY FAVORITE BATMAN OF ALL TIME!

In the comic books before this movie came out was it a storyline? Was it a character choice that Batman did not kill people in the comics from the beginning? I know that there is there like original seven comics he carried a gun and then they change that afterwards.
The guy Batman captures in the opening scene is the old man from Andor who has a stroke in prison.
I love this movie...this was also for me the first SH movie I saw in theaters...and damn...Adam is wicked awesome with that lightsaber...
09:30 they ripped off this exact scene for punisher warzone
the best batman, my favourite batman
You mean iteration of the character, or the movie, or both ?
Nice saber moves, Adam 😉
I always felt the Burton Batman was very much the 60's Batman crossed with the 30's one. Half the camp of the 60's, half the goth of the 30's. Same with Batman Returns. Then Schumacher upped the camp quotient with each of his movies (Batman Forever is 75% camp, 25% goth, Batman & Robin is 100% camp). Nolan went an entirely different route, skipping 90% of the camp and about as much of the goth, and The Batman went entirely goth noir with barely 5% camp.
Saw Superman with Reeve at age ten. Gawd help me but watched the Reb Brown Capt America ABC TV movies age 11. Keaton Batman at 21. A lot of crappy Superhero movies to go before Iron Man in 2008. Grissom's squeeze is played by actress/model Jerry Hall. She of course married the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger the year after this movie came out (1990). At this point they were halfway through having 5 kids together. This movie is a LOT, LOT DARKER...than Batman '66.
5:30 Christopher Fairbanks also play Ulaf in Andor but I like many in the UK growing up in the 1980's remember him as Moxey in the comedy / drama series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Batman kills people in the comics.
This is my favorite interpretation of the character on film because it doesn’t shy away from the insanity. It doesn’t worry about making Batman real and how he would fit in the real world, all that stress about realism ruins it for me. People died in this film just like people died in the Reeves Superman film but no one was going hey Superman doesn’t kill, again, no twitter for people to be on bitching. People just enjoyed the films but if chunks of buildings were falling on the streets and Zod was blowing cars up with heat vision, there was an earthquake that Superman reversed but he originally didn’t save everybody, somebody died.
I can't wait for the Batman Return reaction/commentary. I loved it as a kid and it is still my favorite Batman movie (IDC, IDC...lol)
I think the line where Kim Basinger says she is 108, its just a tongue and cheek joke about how certain women (especially back then) would exaggerate the numbers a little. I'd say she was about 125 😁
Right, and that’s crappy too. To depict this women character as being so concerned with her weight that she lies in a life-or-death scenario. I think it’s a flaw of the film.
@@hectorminator I thought it was funny 🤷🏼♀️ it was 1989, no point in crying over it now
@@Mrs.Deanna_Ember I’m not crying, you don’t need to insult me to make your point. I’m glad you thought it was funny! I also think it’s mostly fine but I also know it bothers some people and I think it’s fine to try and understand why it bothers people. And ask better of our media going forward. I don’t want women or anybody to have to deal with unrealistic body image issues from entertainment. I’m sure you don’t want that either.
ADAM IS A FUCKING JEDI!!!!
Nice moves man!
Joker was honestly a great Gangster in this
I just watched it for the first time too, Augustin!!😂😂😂. Welcome to the club!
Great movie that I haven't thought about or seen in quite awhile!
Also, those SabNeo sabers look AWESOME and appear to be the next step in saber-consumer development.
I can't believe you guys just sat there and didn't say anything about Harvey Dent being Lando Calrissian
I know you said you've seen this many times but... you should've humored us
Tim Burton caught a LOT of flack over the Michael Keaton choice. When asked why he made that choice, he said it was Keaton's eyes that sold him. Michael Keaton did one thing that distinguishes him from ALL other Bat Men. He did a phenomenal job acting like he was more comfortablw as Batman, and more awkward as Bruce Wayne. That's why I think Tim Burton got it right.
Secret Invasion?
My favorite theory was that THIS Batman projects his parents' killer on every criminal he fights, even in his memory, which is why he's so willing to kill.
Sorry, I must disagree. I think this is the best film and adaptation of “Batman”. To each their own, though. :)
Anyone but me noticing how Nicholson's Joker has almost the EXACT same laugh as Cesar Romero's Joker?
Danny Elfman is a god for making Batman theme
Murdering Batman is great as well. Prior to this it was Adam West, Burton was making a statement. An impressive one. It sets it apart and matches the world of Gotham he lives in.
When are you guys reacting to secret invasion?
You talk about how Batman killed all the people at the chemical factory. What about the body count in BATMAN V SUPERMAN? 😊
Yeah, that’s also bad. lol
Can we get a video of Adam with that saber on it's own????
Aww no! you guys watched the 4K version with the horrible teal filter and the new ott sound effects which are SO distracting if you're a huge fan of this movie as i am and are just used to the original sounds. Its like the new sounds or effects in classic star wars films, just dusnt mix and is too distracting. And some shots are sooo bright, like batman vs the joker in the bell tower, it's supposed to be dark and gloomy
When I bought the cassette tape of the soundtrack way back then, it was my first anything with offensive language.
The few friends I had didn't use offensive language, so it felt weird everytime a certain song had someone yelling
"Oh, SON OF A B!+@#!!!"
''I want the doors to my bathroom to look like a safe'' cause whenever I enter I feel like I want to make a deposit:)

Nicholson took a pay cut to do the role but with points on the backend and a percentage of the licensing fees from the toys. And netted him ton of of cash
Great watch...it's crazy that you guys called out the line about her weight...without spoiling anything I will say that is a callback for a new line in the flash
Augustin, I think the make-up when Joker isn't laughing is supposed to make the viewer feel really uncomfortable and subtly terrifying. And they nailed that in spades
Also, gotta say my 7 year old wanted to watch a Batman movie last weekend. When I pulled up the lineup on Max, she immediately pointed to '89 Batman. Absolutely loved it and she wanted me to save the Prince soundtrack on my Spotify.

I hope you guys watch 'Batman Returns' after this; it's so good!
Was Adam doing the anakin swings?!?! Holy crap
Thanks to Hector, for mentioning the weight thing. I've been small, a size 2 to 4 most of my entire adult life. One year, I got really healthy, worked out, ate a lot of fruits and vegetables. I was 115 at 5'6". I was borderline underweight. Under 110 at 5'7", you're probably anorexic or bullemic.
As a kid, I loved Michael Keaton in this movie, and always loved and laughed at the "you wanna see nuts, lets get nuts" line... I also loved Beetlejuice and at the time I never knew as a kid that it was Michael Keaton, when I learned it blew my mind the difference in performance. But looking back at the "you wanna see nuts" scene, I now see a strong resemblance to the Beetlejuice performance.
