I saw quite a few people complain that this remastered version looks “literally the same” as the original. I think it’s a testament to just how good the OG looked on the GameCube’s hardware but this is definitely a massive upgrade.
Not just a simple resolution bump, this is more akin to a remake now, with updated higher poly assets, better lighting, updated controls schemes, new UI elements, etc. Well done Nintendo
When you talk about the remake of a game you start from the beginning and make everything new. This is not what happened here. Drawing some new textures is not a remake. They used the original code and ehanced or swaped the graphics.
@@RubyDoobieScoo you must not understand that the "remake" was marketed as such to fool people. It's actually a sequel to the original timeline after Advent Children
@SatanicSexGod you don't know what a remake is lol. It's cool though. But you don't get new lighting, new/changed effects, new shadows, or increased poly count is a remaster. Some elements have been remade and added so it's much closer to a remake than a remaster. Kinda like the xenoblade one port to switch where character models and assets were made better
I played this game as a kid God only knows how many times. Seeing the remastered version brings tears to my eyes, not just because of how amazing the graphics look now but how faithfully accurate they kept to the original in terms of atmosphere and gameplay
There isn't a single asset that hasn't been completely remade in HD in this game, and yet it's completely faithful to the source material down to the animations and camera angles... And with no drops at 60fps? This is easily the best remaster Nintendo has put out in recent memory, bar none.
Nintendo didn't make it, like the original it was produced by Retro Studios. Yes, they PUBLISHED it, and it's their IP, but they didn't develop it (if Nintendo had released a "remaster" it would look essentially the same, but with a higher output resolution, texture filtering, and would cost $60)
@@yellowblanka6058 I think I need to remind you that almost no remasters of mainline Nintendo games are made by Nintendo. I'm guessing you're talking about something like Skyward Sword HD? Developed by Tantalus, not Nintendo. Ocarina of TIme 3D? Grezzo.
I was mildly hyped when they announced the “remaster” on the direct, but seeing this and realizing it is much more a kin to being a remake makes me so much more excited to get this
That's what I thought as well. Even wondered, why didn't they just release whole Trilogy and decided to just upscale the first one. Now I kinda see why.
What’s crazy is the REMASTERED version is what the memory of the game looks like in my head. So wild how that works. One of my favorite games. Tried passing it down to my kids but they only like Banjo Kazooie and OOT. Still a win
Wow, I did not appreciate how big of an improvement this is from watching the Switch trailer alone. It's easy to forget that this game is 20 years old.
@@MedalionDS9 It's not. Remakes are built entirely from the ground up. This is still running on the original engine from what I can tell, just for gameplay. I imagine it's using a separate engine specifically for the visuals. The visuals are remade from the ground up, but the game itself is not. That makes it a remaster. It's actually the same way Halo CE and 2 were remastered.
@@MedalionDS9 it's not a remake for crying out loud. I seriously can't believe people to this day are still mistaking remaster as remake and vice versa. I used to play this game with my older brother on the GameCube. He passed away in 2016 so watching this is flooding me with good memories. This is game has such an awesome science fiction vibe. That load up screen is especially nostalgic for me! Sound effects and the colors too with the molecules sticking together
Wow they did good with this. They didn’t change it really to where it would be more remake territory, but they definitely made some notable improvements especially to the weaker looking stuff. I think the OG version’s menu looks cooler though. Other than that big kudos!
I'm glad that the companies are remastering games that are beloved by all, as well as remaking games to be more for a continuous world with new stories to explore.
Don't be too glad. Sometimes it's an opportunity to do the bare minimum for maximum profit. Most remasters are anything but a remaster, just an upscale in resolution. Be grateful for the good remasters while quietly hoping developers honour previous games by building from them and making new, quality content for us to love.
This looks like a great remaster with all the work they've done with the graphics. And it even have new control options. Finally Nintendo wasn't lazy. This is almost like the Crisis Core remaster quality.
Yes but unlike crisis core, metroid prime has aged pretty well. Crisis core on the other hand has a relatively poor gameplay, filled with a Lot of secondary missions that are too repetitive justo to extent artificially the duration of the Game!
I get what you’re saying but “finally” is a bit dramatic if you’re referring to remasters/remakes. OOT 3D, Majora’s mask 3D, WindWaker HD, Link’s Awakening, MK8 Deluxe, just off the top of my head are remakes that were done justice. The upscaling of titles like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were some bs though. Hopefully they stop with those type of cash grabs.
This is the kind of remaster i like, improved visuals and updated models, but same visual aesthetic, you can see in the opening sequence the jump in detail just from the station structure that the camera get's close, but while watching normally it doesn't pop out that much until you pause and look at it side by side. Loved to see this.
Apparently, they even brought back the beam effects that were missing from the Wii version! This really is the complete package. As much as I'll always prefer the original, this is a worthy remaster, and I intend to show my appreciation by buying and playing the heck out of it.
I'll always prefer the original, but this is the first remaster I can think of in recent memory that I have no reservations about wanting to buy. That's the reason I never picked up the wii version - it was missing little things like the gunsmoke after spamming the power beam, the ice buildup when charging the ice beam - little, important things like that. But this version looks like the complete package. I'm excited.
This is so nostalgic for me. The first console I ever bought for myself was a GameCube with money from my first part time job as a kid and I got Metroid Prime with it... I stayed up all night playing that game and was blown away. It really started my love of gaming.
This makes the GameCube version look like a DS game 😅 Retro Studios did an incredible job. I hope they remaster Prime 2. It's my personal favorite Prime game.
It’s always funny for me when I see a remaster of a game I loved as a kid and I think to myself “it always looked that good” and then I look again and realize oh wait it did not at all
@@smoothbanana That's the way it is for all systems that came out before HDMI... they were made with CRTs in mind, and they could get away with jagged pixels because the CRTs would smooth them out. The Gamecube and PS2 (and the Wii, too somewhat) is in that unfortunate in-between the old pixel-based graphics of the 16 bit era and the new HDMI HD era. The 8 and 16 bit games had visible pixels even on a CRT so it's not that much of a shock when you load one up on modern hardware, but yet the PS2 and some Gamecube games will look terrible because they relied upon the CRT smoothing effect in that era. Thankfully, SCART cables and SCART to HDMI boxes are a thing to mitigate this some (they look way better than using AV cables on LCD TVs!) but even that will only take you so far. I'm glad they're doing this, and I hope the GC version Twilight Princess is next after the other two Prime games; I only played the Wii version and everybody says the GC version is better (I didn't really like the aim controls TBH, I think a lock-on like Ocarina would be better).
This is amazing. Not only did the original age well but when I first saw footage of the remaster I didn't even notice much of a difference because I thought that is how it originally looked.
It's a remaster and the best kind, just like what they did to call of duty and Xenoblade Chronicles; redoing the graphics and adding quality of life changes.
It's definitely just a remaster, but it's done the same way Halo's remasters were done, using the original engine for gameplay and a new engine for the visuals.
Seeing these side by side hit my nostalgia goggles hard. I initially looked at the remaster trailer and thought, it just looks upscaled and slightly better textures. Yeah no. I was wrong. This looks sick.
When this game originally came out on Gamecube I thought to myself "That's it... There's no way games can look better than they are now... This is the peak." Here we are now 20 years later and it looks so much better now!
I’m so happy it was a little more than just a simple HD upscale. They actually re did a lot of the textures and it all looks amazing. And dual stick controls are really nice to have.
its not. Its more of a really, really well done remaster. They didnt remake anything except the superficial paint, that they use as a base for the new one (and not reimagined)
Metroid Prime was WAY ahead of its time for games. The level of immersion was just so high that doing mundane stuff in game like staring at rain or steam vents and scanning everything was amusing.
Guys, you're not crazy. It did look better on a CRT than what you're shown here. (Graphics that were made for CRTs only look good on CRTs. If you want to see examples, I suggest this incredible video called "The 30 Most Mind-Blowing Games Examples of Retro Pixel Art" by Wobbling Pixels. I'm so glad that they gave the remaster some care! They could've easily just upscaled the textures/resolution and bumped up the framerate. But the fact that they went and redid all the textures and added some new control options makes me so happy that they didn't do just the bare-minimum with this remaster
@@BladeDevil other companies (especially nintendo) typically don't hire 9 other different development studios to work on one remaster like retro studios did with this remaster
I genuinely can't believe this game is on switch and looks this good. Has to be some early prime 4 tech we're seeing here to make it look this good. Absolutely insane
And the funny thing is, if you squint carefully at the original footage, you CAN see pirates floating in space but they're very JPEGish so it was easy to think of them as just space debris. It was until this comparison that it finally clicked they were supposed to be corpses!
Got this game originally when I was in middle school. The remaster is just beautiful. Many emotional moments while playing. Being struck by the atmosphere of the ruins. Listening to phendrana shores calming music while pretending to hunt and shoot the little birds hahah. How time flies.
Wow, I can't believe they didn't spend more time during the Direct highlighting just how extensive the graphical improvements are. It really wasn't apparent to me until this side by side that it is so much more than an upres'd version, and they put so much work into updating the visuals.
I played the remaster. I'm astonished at the detailing. No repeated textures. On organic environments..I'm playing the GC version for the 1st time on my phone with emulator. Amazing how little needed to be changed.
In case anyone is worried about how it plays, let me tell you that it plays incredibly well! They've included so many control options (including GameCube-like controls) and works with the gyroscope. Btw, it also looks great on the Switch Lite (if you can, play it on the OLED Switch of you decide to play it on handheld mode)
How do you switch beams while using modern fps style controls ? Do you hold a trigger button while moving one of the sticks ? Just curious how that works

Nitpicky detail but I like how Samus' face is better seen through the visor in the original. As trivial as it is, it blew my mind back when I first played the game and it made her seem more humanized. Still super happy that Metroid is getting more attention and more people can now play this classic.
This is probably why Prime 4 is delayed, they were doing this. This is also a glimpse of how Prime 4 could look / perform on switch hardware. Retro did a great job.

@BreadandFaxes just bought it digital and it makes me wish Halo CE had gotten this amount of love. Lol
This is literally one of those moments that you'd see in memes that say "this is what you remember the game looking like" lol
Square Enix should take note.

The best since Ocarina 3D for me.
However that was held back by the hardware, this isn't which is amazing :)
Grezzo.

Wow, I did not appreciate how big of an improvement this is from watching the Switch trailer alone. It's easy to forget that this game is 20 years old.
When I first played Prime at launch on GCN, I remember constantly thinking “wow, there’s no way graphics can get better than this”.
It's part remaster, part remake (assets from the ground up not just retouched), I LOVE IT! I hope they give 2 and 3 the same treatment.
more then likely will
It's a remake... but I think they wanted to cover their asses from setting expectations too high so they call it a remaster.
It's probably built off of what they've been working on for Prime 4. It's really great to see.
Wow they did good with this. They didn’t change it really to where it would be more remake territory, but they definitely made some notable improvements especially to the weaker looking stuff. I think the OG version’s menu looks cooler though. Other than that big kudos!
Yeah, that's really my biggest gripe with this remaster, I vastly prefer the old UI. It just had more personality.
Glad I'm not the only one. The OG menus give me Area 51 vibes which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I was astonished by how well the UI held up even though I already knew other parts of the game did. MP’s artists were at the top of their class.

I love that they kept the style of the original game as much as possible

Metroid Prime is one of my all time favourite games, and I devoured it upon its original release.
Apparently, they even brought back the beam effects that were missing from the Wii version! This really is the complete package. As much as I'll always prefer the original, this is a worthy remaster, and I intend to show my appreciation by buying and playing the heck out of it.
While there's a couple of designs I prefer the original for, this remaster is gorgeous. I definitely need to buy this.
Just goes to show how much graphical standards have evolved, and also how good the game looked for its time.
Also CRT screen has something to contribute for the display output
Yes, I just thought exactly that !
@@Jaka.Ellinsworth Yeah it definitely didn't look that jagged before
@@smoothbanana That's the way it is for all systems that came out before HDMI... they were made with CRTs in mind, and they could get away with jagged pixels because the CRTs would smooth them out.
