- CATCH ME IN THE HOSPITAL (VLOG): • Day In The Life Of A D...
The good doctor is becoming my favorite show on TV let alone my favorite medical drama. I really have come to appreciate the writing/humor of the show.
I think it is so important to be able to not only create a show that is interesting but also keeping it medically accurate and give a great example of how one with autism can strive to new heights.
If we can get this video up to 100,000 likes I can use that to try and get Freddie Highmore to do a review with us so smash that like button!!!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Good Doctor / Real Doctor Reacts to The Good Doctor . If you want me to continue making this doctor reaction video please give it a like and leave me a comment on which tv drama or show you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

As an autist I love the representation of our real everyday experiences in this show. Instead of only focusing on "how cool savants are" and skipping "unimportant" traits, the writers included a scene in the opening of this episode where the autistic character is lying awake due to noise sensitivity. The little moment at the end where the woman hugs him and he just stands there stiffly makes me feel so validated for not liking physical affection. Finally, I really appreciate the parts of the show where he's "overly direct", "too honest", or misunderstands implied context. Sometimes they're played for comedy, but the writers never made it look like he's a bad person or deserves to be reprimanded for it. After decades of only seeing media representing neurodivergency as a flaw, joke, or problem, it's so lovely to watch something that advocates understanding and cooperation, especially when a person like me is the hero!
Could not have said it better myself. I feel this too.
Agreed
See as an autistic person myself I fully agree with this and this is how I feel
But my mother who works as a social worker with adults who have learning disabilities absolutely hates the show, saying autistic people are not like that at all, and something I remember vividly her saying is "Yeah, because autistic people speak like they're a robot" and i was just like "bro- just because you work with people who have autism doesn't mean you've seen every manifestation of it. And also you work with people who have high support needs, not low support needs" (she also still uses the functioning labels and it annoys the hell out of me)
Aaaand that was longer than I intended, apologies
It's great to have neurodivergent representation on the show. As someone with ADHD and NVLD, I define can relate to Shaun. This show really gets a lot right.
Bro wrote the whole paragraph (sorry if i offended you)

shaun: yes

My dad and my uncle both needed knee surgery. On the same day. With the same surgeon. On opposite knees. And they're identical twins.
The poor surgeon was incredibly stressed.
My gosh, yeah that would be so difficult not to screw up. I'd be asking the family members who was who looking for some differentiating characteristics lol.
Were they given different colored bracelets, like twin newborns? 😆
Checklist and sharpies on the surgical knee. Asked over and over to confirm that it was THIS knee. No twin needed, but surely heightened anxiety in that case.

I was really unsure about this show but this has definitely made a must watch. Dr. Shaun is so cute and sweet and the general storyline just from the two episodes Dr. Mike has reviewed seems so interesting, fascinating and positive.

Unfortunately this goes both ways. Doctors refused to do tests and investigate my continuous symptoms that were seriously affecting my life. Then finally 10 years later, one does and I'm diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. My neurologist told me that I've had it for a long time, likely more than 10 years of it being active. That means lots of irreversible brain damage that could've been stopped sooner. I'm on DMT's now and the damage has stopped. I wish I'd had someone like him in the beginning!

I think I first noticed it in season 2ep17 during the "I am a surgeon" scene when I started bawling. I'm so emotionally invested in Sean, Lea, Glassy, Claire, Morgan... The last time I had a vulvar complaint, there was a resident helping. It definitely was kind of awkward and I felt embarrassed at first (even though I did give permission for her to be there), but the resident radiated such intense desire to Get This Right that I felt comfortable very quickly. She listened closely, took me seriously and did the exam carefully and considerately. She gave a correct diagnosis and made sure I understood what the issue was and what the options were. It was a very good experience and I would encourage anyone nervous about letting newbies sit in on their appointments to give it a try.
Ok. This made me reconsiter this series. It made me happy that he was made with more...flaws than that first episode did. He seems more grounded. More relatable.

I have Autism and I love this show. My mother was the manager of a hospital. I grew up reading her Anatomy & Physiology books to her so she could study for college while she cooked, cleaned and took care of us. It reminds me of that time. I’m very good in the subject, but my dyslexia makes it immoral for me to practice medicine. I also have the social skills of a potato and so my bedside manner would suffer along with my patients. I pursued writing instead. I was forced to take an elective outside of my fields of interest and discovered in my first drawing class that I can create master level art. So now I do that full time and it has become an interest. I considered doing medical art, but I believe VR will kill the need for the practice. I do wonder watching this show what I could have been without dyslexia. I can sometimes relate with the character, but sometimes the representation of high functioning ASD here, is more comical and exaggerated than what is typical. I do also work with children who have ASD as a BHP for Section 28 Services for the state of Maine and I do have a wider lens for the condition than my own personal experience, however as the saying goes... if you know one person who has Autism, you know ONE person who has Autism, so perhaps I am being too hard on the show.
That was incredibly interesting to read! Just as a curiosity of sorts, what's a BHP?
He told write write,not type
@@SenhorAlien Behavioural Health Professional
I agree that autism varies greatly. I think I'm very lucky to have managed to get the social skills to go into medicine. I am doing what I love, and there's a lot of people out there who have autism who'd love to do my job (especially firefighting) but just couldn't handle it. That being said, I wish this show wasn't so over the top with the autism based gags. It bothers me that we are supposed to believe someone who's made it this far into medicine doesn't understand that, when the resident said "well clearly he made the best choice for this hire." that he was being sarcastic. Yeah it's a show, but to me it's lazy writing that's designed to satiate the common understanding of autism. Rather than make Autism a character, make the character and make him autistic, if that makes sense. Personally, I've chosen to view my aspergers as a series of undesirable traits that I can work to minimize or eliminate, which has helped me in the long run. I think this characterizes the main trap writers fall into when making autistic characters. They do it from the book definition. This is how an autistic person acts, and they can't change it. Not true at all. Early intervention has helped many and some are able to understand sarcasm, others can't. This character was born to be autistic, not born with autism.
Speaking as someone who has a great level of exposure in the disability community.... It's NOT immoral for you to practice medicine just because you're dyslexic. You can always double check your work and then confirm your numbers with your peers. It's the very reason why people work in medical TEAMS. Furthermore, there's many ways to work in medical science without being a direct to the public doctor, such as working in medical research.... Einstein was dyslexic, and he contributed extensively to the achademic community.
Thank you for your support of the Autistic! I have high functioning Autism, so there are times I screw up with social stuff. Thank heavens people like you are out there and don’t particularly care about social perfection.
I love how I can always learn something in Dr. Mikes videos!

Nurses are amazing. I love your respect for them. My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 17 with Evans’s syndrome, which (for those who don’t know) means that she developed allergies to both her red and white blood cells. My daughters doctor diagnosed her with ITP initially but thanks to the nurse who kept insisting on more tests the doctor ordered them. Turns out my daughter need not only IVg but 2 blood transfusions. Thanks to that nurse my daughter also received CT scans which showed bleeding in her brain and intestines. The doctor was by no means arrogant, he had simply never encountered Evans syndrome before whereas the nurse had. The doctor who respected his nurse and LISTENED to her was then able to save my daughter. My daughter was in hospital for over a week and basically lived as an out patient for nearly two years having to go through multiple IVg, blood transfusions and chemo to deliberately kill her immune system in order to rebuild it. If it weren’t for that nurse (I can’t even say the words out loud) my daughter would not be here. My love and respect to doctors and nurses alike for all you do.

7:20; I'm so glad you pointed this out. My dad had a tumor (non-malignant) on his lower right shoulder blade. And his doctor was examine him (he had a nurse and intern in the room as well) and my dad said he felt the doctor touching around on his lower LEFT shoulder blade and was feeling around for about 5 minutes and my dad finally said "uh, doctor? The tumor is on my right side". I have no idea how the doc missed it considering it was a huge ball. My dad told me that when he had turned around to tell the doc that the interns face was turning a little red trying really hard not to laugh and the nurse was looking up at the ceiling holding in her laughter as well.
I also had this happened.
I broke my hand bone under the ring finger and get a cast with the pinky along with it to make sure the bone is set right.
Then when the bone is almost heal and it time to change cast, they put the new cast on my pinky. I have to tell the doctor about it. He look at the film, look at my hand and almost yell at the nurse while fixing it.
My husband had hand surgery and marked his one hand with “yes” and the other with “no”. 🖐
That's really unprofessional. But funny as well.😅 I can immagine his embarrassment.
Mary Channel its funny lol
That beewoop was perfectly timed with the music, very satisfying :)
Lady: LIKE ITS KILLING ME???!?!?!?
Shawn: Yes
I've binge watched this series and now whenever I see any medical show I always have the thought "What would Dr. Mike say about this?"
cutienana92 what is it on
400 hundred like
Where do you watch it
When I started this show I just couldn’t stop until I finished it,the stories and curiosity with what will happen to Shawn just grips you
I just love how happy he is
When the main character says "thank you" to something sarcastic, I could relate.
That is why this is my all time favorite show lol
Not only is Dr. Mike great to look at, he has a shining personality and is very educational! It is also great that he isn't monotone so you can follow along with the information he is giving, making it interesting rather than boring!
Whitney Lingo I agree I work at a clinic and one of our attractive doctor’s is monotone and it makes me sad lol
I hear ya Whitney - Dr Mike is awesome!
Aikaterine Illt Like you in real life perhaps, am I right? Keep talking shit with your one like that you probably did to your own comment. Have a nice day.

The emphasis on reassuring patients is so true in teaching, too. Parents come in frustrated, upset, and angry, and the most important thing I can do is listen and let them know their concerns are heard. I can't promise them their kid will graduate on time or get accepted into Harvard or get a particular grade in the class, but letting them know that I'm listening and I care really helps defuse the situation so much. Often, there are major life events occurring outside of school and the student is struggling because of events far beyond my ability to control. Once the parents have calmed down, they're much more willing to listen to whatever advice I can offer.
Finally a doctor who treats nurses as equals!
Chelsea Melissa u must be a nurse
Oh
In the uk the nurses scold the doctors lol
twice the work half the pay....
@@awesomenumber65 no. That's absolutely wrong. Often there is a shortage of nurses and they have to work overtime. Plus we have 4 or 5 patients to deal with at any given time
NO NO NO! You NEED to watch all of the first season to understand the second season! Like this so he can see!
Edit: i saw the intro, but at 13:22 he said he was going to jump into the second season, but watched the second episode for a little bit of context. That is were I’m coming from
Agreed!! It’s on Hulu. Watch it.
That's generally how TV works.
But he should watch all of it. He'll miss some extremely defining moments and emotional ones. Like ones with Lea.
He's reviewing the medical aspect of it
Yes yes yes, you need to watch them all
Interesting...I haven't had time to watch the show...thanks for your insight and reviews.
Its so nice that you act explain what is right and wrong and why and dont just say no thats wrong and then goes further in the video
"Malignant? That means its killing me?!"
"YeS"
The smile
He said that so happily.

He's sleeping on the floor, he probably just moved into a place and is seeing how big of a bed he needs
Someone with common sense! Big like
me while waiting for the next episode of season 7 to come out
ive watched this show on and off over the past however many years and recently i came back to it and yes, it is the best medical drama out there honestly ive tried a bunch of other ones, nothing compares, it really just makes you feel good, more so for me perhaps because i used to watch it when i was in high school, easier times, makes me nostalgic for back then so yeah, feels good
My grandpa said
“If your early your on time
If your on time your late
And if your late your fired “
This is why my husband makes us be, like, an hour or more early for stuff lol
You're *
You’re x 3
That was drilled in my head since I was really young. That’s how my dad was as an police officer and he still lives by that today. I do too. I always show up to my classes 30 min early even on zoom. I just feel better that way to be early. Makes you stress less.
How early is early? Why even have a scheduled time if you want someone there at an earlier time?
People who are excessively early create just as much stress on the people around them as people that are excessively late; Monetarily, anxiousness, and distrust.
I follow a +/- 5 minute rule. If youre 5 minutes early: sweet, that won’t make me feel too late when I’m almost done setting up, or you’re not getting paid for Too much time that wasn’t planned. 5 minutes late: sweet, glad you only got stuck at one railroad crossing, or haven’t missed anything but the hello’s and introduction statements, I’m not too offended.
5 minutes, 8.33% or 1/12 of an hour.
