  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. If you told me in my 20s that I'd be living the life I have now, I probably wouldn't believe you. Just 10 years ago, my life was directionless. My work was stressful, I was addicted to designer shopping, I had very little personal life, and I just couldn't visualise a better future. Fast forward to now, I'm incredibly grateful for a life that feels fulfilling and balanced. I'm now able to work part time, enjoy my hobby, work on my passion project, enjoy a curated wardrobe, travel, and grow as a person. Many people say, your life is sum of the life choices you make. I absolutely agree with that statement. In this video, I talked about the 3 things I stopped doing to live a much happier life xx

You touched on one of the most important things I have discovered, which it's also part of your last point on this video. Why buy a VanCleef necklace when you have a real life that you won't be able to use it and not one person in your circle would know or give a darn about it.

I definitely agree about living for the life that you have and not what you dream of having. This has been the hardest thing for me to reconcile with. I have handbags and a wardrobe for a life I do not and I have a lot of options. Decluttering has been really hard. I mostly stay at home and have not carried some of handbags in over 2 years. Plus, I live in the U.S. and it is scary to think of carrying my Chanel bag and being followed home and robbed. I was once followed home from the store and instead of driving home I drove straight to the police station and they drove off. Not being a target is my biggest thing now also.

I know i will be laughed at but i also have the habit of buying for the life i dream of and not my real life. But now, instead of just not wearing all my beautiful things ( as i really don’t have anyplace to wear them)- you will see me at my doctors appts in my Agolde jeans and Veronica Beard blazers, and carrying my YSL bags. I just cannot leave all those things sitting in my closet so i do wear them when i go out, but i really don’t go anyplace great. I am trying not to shop at all now and just use the things i bought in the last couple of years, as they are very nice pieces that deserve to be used.

I retired very young and I am so and so happy. My life is slower, I enjoy looking at birds in the mornings. See the stars at night and traveling the world. Knowing other people learning from other cultures. This is real life!!! Thank you for your videos. You transmit all this calm.

I found at the turn of the new year that I value my peace more than anything. I’m an accountant with a demanding career, and all decisions this year and next year will be to be comfortable enough to work part-time as an accountant for the rest of my life. This means choosing contentment over luxury handbags for myself, as well as luxury cars, etc. I find myself in the same shoes you were in

Eileen. You can do whatever you want as it's your life. Being a minimalist doesn't mean you have to do without but are very mindful of what you purchase. From watching your videos I think you are wi ning. I see you buying quality and what you love and what suits you and your lifestyle.. I found the hardest thing about where I am in life now retired and mainly home based, not going out as much is reworking my wardrobe for the life I have and am living.. I almost never succeed as even though I am home I still love to wear clothes and make-up and nice shoes. However I have reduced stuff in my home to mostly just what we need and use. Thankyou for this great video.❤

What I have learned during my life is to not care what people think of you especially when it comes to luxury goods. There is absolutely no point in buying things just so that your friends, family, coworkers, etc. are impressed by them. I buy strictly because I love the items. Luxury goods are extremely expensive and if you think of the time you have to work to obtain them just so you can impress others is just pointless. I’m trying to reinforce these thoughts on my son who is a grown adult. The less you buy the more likely you are to be debt free. Nothing feels as good as not having debt and your time being your own.

Your video really resonates with me. I too have worked so hard to the point where it severely impacted my physical and mental health. I filled a void in my life by buying designer things. While I still use a small fraction of those items, the rest are collecting dust in my closet. I get a small instant gratification at first purchase impressing others but you’re absolutely right; you are not the main character in anyone else’s life but your own. So now I only buy things that serves me first and foremost.
I also quit my job and started focusing on important things in my life like my family and happiness. I’m only doing part time work for mental and financial balance now. But when I quit my job, many people were disappointed, especially my mom. However, I realized that other people’s expectations of me is not my responsibility to live up to. Your life, time, and money is limited so you have to dedicate it to the things that you love.
I recognize that I’m the privileged few that can afford to find this balance. For that I am grateful.

Eileen, thank you for another insightful video. Keep doing you and try not to pay attention to negative comments. It’s unfortunate that there are toxic people in this world that feel the need to spew their negativity.

For the last point, I'm glad you touched on not caring what people think because you're not the main character in their lives and they will forget about things over time anyway. But yet you are stuck with paying for the stuff to impress those ppl. These days I'm even to the point of feeling embarrassed to wear something impressive in front of certain ppl, as I fear they might judge me negatively for having them. Like if I go pickup my kid and the teachers see I'm all blinging in fancy shoes, I fear they will think my kid is spoiled too and won't treat her as patiently. Or I go to the car shop and the technicians will con me for more costs to repair my car because they think I'm rich. If I dress in designer in front of friends, they may think I'm too high maintenance and not easy going. Etc

    • @VBoo459
      @VBoo459 5 месяцев назад

It seems like you care more about what people think like Eileen, just in reverse. Why not buy something you like? or wear what you like because people may think negatively? Eileen might simply like those things. I thought to sell my Chanel handbag I love because oh people might view me negatively, but so what?! Why can't you have and wear what you like. Impress yourself, not others. simply wear what is appropriate dependent on where you're going. If you're worried about what strangers think then what type of life is that?

@@VBoo459 it just clicked to me that maybe that's why people prefer quiet luxury. They still feel good and others won't recognize and judge.
The people who want others to know, will wear mainstream large logo luxury stuff. The people like me can wear quiet luxury.
The people who don't desire luxury, don't care what others think, wear no luxury.

I recently found your channel and am so happy that I did! You are a wise professional woman and you express yourself extremely well. I’m probably twice your age and have come to many of the realizations that you have already at such a young age. Spending time with the people you love and enjoying the simple things in life are what’s important to me. I retired from work very early (47) after working hard in my career. My husband and I had saved enough for retirement and going strong 20 years later. I worked part-time after retirement for 7 years and have no regrets.

You are glowing since you took time off and have returned to work. You look stunning. Congratulations on returning to your profession. I find doing my best to leave work at work when I am finished for the day and having an after work plan i.e., do something I enjoy or clean my home, get some exercise, anything but ruminate about work. Keep up the positive vibes and ignore the naysayers.

You’ve chosen wisely. A sign of maturity when you define your own healthy choices that support your family happiness. You’re saying “these are a few of my favorite things.” Few= minimalism. Favorite things = things that make you happy regardless of how much they cost (money or time). Good for you!

Hi Eileen, I am so glad I found your video moving from buying luxury to minimalism but still continue to buy things you adore at your own financial comfort. I am moving towards the directions of owning pieces that’s suits me and my lifestyle than following the trend that everyone should have one in the wardrobe. ❤

The best point in this whole video is the not worrying about what other people think and your analogy on the car and no one caring about it 2 months later, but you're still making payments is excellent! Buy it for YOU. And take a page from Marie Kondo I guess, if it doesn't spark joy, maybe you shouldn't buy it in the first place. Loved this video, I think we get so hung up on what everyone else thinks and we need to live our life for ourselves, not others.

We get the life we choose for ourselves. People like to blame others, their background, circumstances out of their control but it just isn’t true. Yes some people have an easier start or have exceptional talents that make the path seem easier but often it’s an illusion. We can all point to wealthy or talented people who made a total mess of their lives with their choices. Keep to your path, you are doing great.

  • @VBoo459

I think its okay to love luxury goods but within reason. ie. I don't mind a designer bag that I love and will use often, but I won't splurge on designer jewellery that I can get the same quality and materials elsewhere for 1/3 the price (and in a better design too!). If it starts making you work more, become more anxious about keeping your job (to afford these things), and impacts your savings and investments then its absolutely the WRONG direction. I think luxury within the minimalist space is really great and also realistic for most people. I love luxury, even cars - but I'll never drown myself in financial anxiety. No thanks. I also am learning to stop caring what others think, this means I will wear the designer bag I love (to appropriate places) irrespective of people thinking i'm high maintenance, and I will also wear pyjamas and drop my clothes at the dry cleaners if I want to as well! :)

Yes I care less what other people say or feel about my life, im the person living in this life and do whatever I want and buy what I need. I feel bad for those doing things to please others, so silly once you know. Also society teaches us productivity ties to the target (aka capitalism) but when you think about it what is the end of this race? dangling little carrot in front of you to make you work like a slave? once we see things clearly you can truly filter what's valuable for you. thank you for sharing.
