  • While Illinois rules out marital misconduct as a factor or ground for dissolution of marriage, it can still affect other issues. Dissipation is the use of marital funds by one spouse solely during the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. Helping us understand the relationship between marital misconduct and dissipation are James B. Pritikin, Divorce and Family Law partner, and former President of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Illinois Chapter, and Candace L. Meyers, Divorce and Family Law partner who has been practicing almost fifteen years exclusively in family law with a focus on collaborative law and mediation. They share insights on how divorce lawyers go about identifying the numbers for the distribution of the marital estate, how they deal with children issues, and more.

My husband signed a 2 year lease for an apartment in an active senior community and the value of the lease is almost $200 K, the monthly expense for the lease is almost 3 times the average rent for apartments with the same number of bedrooms. He's pressuring me to sell our house before delayed maintenance is done, wants a quick mediated divorce pressuring me to agree with hiring a mediator, I am not familiar with what is reasonable. Our home was in complete chaos, we gave away most furniture, we're spending a lot on paint, carpet, countertops, roof. Realtors want to paint all cabinets when the cabinets are fine. I'm concerned about the lease since we are married - will the creditor come after me. In my first marriage a debt was awarded to my ex-husband, he didn't pay so the creditor came after me. Thank you for doing this topic!

I'm glad people are not getting married anymore to reduce the slimness of people who make money off of other peoples misfortunes
