I just had to revisit this video. It is a very valuable addition to my learning of a seldom discussed niche of Chinese folk religious tradition and custom. The density of the folk lore history history revealed here on this subject is quite rare. But, in English it may be unique. I would not hesitate to use this video in my college class of Asian Humanities. The clarity of the narrative and photography is really attention grabbing. In the language of my youth, this video is "Far out, right on, and solid."
Thank you so much for your encouragement and ongoing support Jim! It means a tonne coming from you, my knowledge base is by far nowhere near yours at all. Please by all means use this video for your college class and let me know if there's any particular topics you would like a video of to be made, I'll try my best to do so! I do owe you a 'black dog orh gao' or more!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
A wonderful and informative video on an aspect of Taoist heritage not often seen. Additionally, the photgraphy is very valuable to understanding the very find detals of the statues. Another bonus is the nature and root of this special family and Singapore cultural history.
James Kemp Thank you for your support and words of encouragement! I'm doing my part in trying to preserve this intangible culture and heritage side of Singapore.
Finally back to your Artisan-ship roots! :) If they have a place or way these can be ordered perhaps a link or details in the description? I love the fact these are hand made with attention and love of a craft.
Ser Wombles Yes back to featuring some artisans but staying within the deity themes. Say Tian Hng has its own website with a link to purchase some not all of the effigies online via Etsy. If you are looking for something outside of that list, its best to contact them via FB and they have been super responsive!!
Hi, Fabian here. I loved the 2nd part of hhe video, but here are a few things to consider about the first half: Are deities really contained in the statues? What about when you have 100000 statues of the same deity all in different temples in different places. If they are in statues, why use incense to communicate with them in Heaven? Does the eye opening ritual actually bring the statue alive? Is it the ritual that fills it with the divine essence of the deity? Being drawn to the statue's feeling, power or energy? Before its eyes are opened? In part 2, also worth thinking about is what you say about the purpose of deity.
I am so happy I've found this channel! Thank you for making these videos
