9:44 Forget aspiring to be a FB aspire to be Kyle Juszczyk, dude has a Harvard degree, carries his NFL position, and is married to entrepreneur wife. Yeah this dude winning at life.
His wife literally just uses his money, she ain't no damn entrepreneur, and getting into harvard as a white man born into a rich white family literally means nothing, he also isn't carrying his position AT ALL, if he were it won't already be dead, you guys are so deranged man
@Spartan_Virtus Nah, most guys at the position are better than him. He's played poorly for some time now. But his fans seem to be unaware of the decline.
If we're talking FB as in the players then yes, they have significantly declined over the years. If we're talking the responsibilities of that position, they haven't gone away, but they've really merged with TE's more than anything. Someone like Juszczyk and previous to him, someone like Chris Cooley for the Redskins, is what the "modern FB" looks like now, it's going to be a guy who can play the common FB and TE responsibilities, and is able to line up all over the offense, whether it's in the backfield, on the line, or even split out wide. Honestly at this point with rosters as tight as they are, most teams will either just cross-train a TE, a backup RB (preferably a goal-line type back) or even a smaller OL to fulfill the FB responsibilities. The job didn't go away, the roster slot just went to guys who are more versatile.
Fun fact. Bronko Nagurski held the World Heavyweight Wrestling title which was the forerunner to the NWA World title held by Ric Flair, Terry Funk, Dusty Rhodes, etc. And at a time where you had best be able to handle yourself in the ring in case your opponent decided to go into business for himself.
It depends on the system and formation, but if you were running the I formation back then, the Fullback was almost always the lead blocker and that was it.
It comes down to knowing how to use it. In my offense I keep 2-3 FB and play 2 of them every game. I-form is a must and fullback dives at the goal line are perfect. Plus when you do play action out of the I-form you can have a TE and FB go out on levels making it a pick your poison for the defense.
Great video. My only bone to pick would be when you showed the I formation graphic in regards to the historical position of the fullback. Its listed as RB deepest then the fullback. Thats how it is in modern times but not back then. The position names make total sense for when they were created. You have the quarterback, who is closest to the line, then the halfback, who is halfway between the qb and the rb, then you have the fullback who is the furthest back from the line of scrimmage.
He barely plays outside of special teams, might not be known. This year in times he would usally be on the field we just bring Alec Anderson in for another lineman in short yard situations
I’m saying, Gilliam is a solid blocker and was a high grade in pff for a few years. But the bills prefer calling on an extra olineman instead like other teams
The Fullback is the jack of all trades on the offense but is overshadowed by other positions (running back, Tight end, wide receiver) who do other skills better and are specialized for their roll. Running backs have power and agility, tight ends can block and catch the ball while wide receivers have the speed and quickness. This leaves little room for a Fullback unless the offense is designed with one in mind or has a player that can fill that roll for the limited situations that would be provided in today's football landscape and game planning.
I can remember when Emmit Smith wasn't doing really good so they went into an I formation with a fullback and all of a sudden he started running the ball again like crazy. This is why he cried during his hall of fame speech talking about all the blocking that Daryl Johnston did for him all those years.
Good point, he was great but i think he was probably too good at blocking and that kinda led fullback down this path of being replaced by tightends😂 but yea I could have mentioned him
@@DeeMedia21 I don’t mean any disrespect. I’m also new to your channel. I really enjoyed this video, and liked a couple of others that you’ve done. But, I respectfully disagree. The fullback position has been primarily a blocker since at least the mid 20th century. The paradigm that I knew was that the fullback only touched the ball 2-4 times a game, because of that. The modern pro game relies far more heavily upon spread out passing offenses, which doesn’t really need a fullback. Yet, blocking is still the core skill of the game. The fullback’s role in those running offenses in the past was critical to their success. Lorenzo Neal was hands down the best ever. You need to do a spot on him. He beat people up, up and down the field.
Fullbacks will never fully go extinct. The fact they are so rare gives them value. Because 90 percent of teams dont employ one the vast majority of the time, having one makes you different from every other team, and therefore harder to gameplan against
John Riggins. Watch his touchdown run against the Miami Dolphins in 1982's Super Bowl. Fourth down and inches and he "trucked" (ran over) a cornerback on his way to a 40 yard touchdown run. This is what a fullback does.
Fullbacks evolved into tight ends, and instead of blocking in the backfield acted as a extra blocker on the line to help better downfield block as well as be a checkdown threat
Good stuff. Also, defenses have changed from 80's/90's with 2 high safeties and no more 7 or 8 in a box base fronts (85 Bears). FB is less effective for lead outs and many don't have catching skills like TE's. Most FB's today like CJ Ham Vikings are special teams studs to contribute all around.
College haven't produced a complete fullback in over 30 years. Even then out the Eighties ,colleges produced fullback that were running threats could lead & pass block and were reliable receivers out of the back field. Today you'd be luck to find a FB that excels at two of these attributes. Jerome Bettie & Mike Alsott was a jumo half back/bellcows that could not lead block.
I'm honestly surprised i haven't seen current NFL OC's incorporate their TE's into that position it's literally the same skill set (bigger than average, can block, enough speed to lead block with an extra boost to catching attributes)
I’d disagree for one reason that it is almost dead. 1) There are entire formations that depend on the Fullback position to just exist…heck there are run concepts that work a lot better with a lead blocker than no lead blocker. 2) as QBs become more expensive and Wide receivers become more like divas, teams are gonna want to to establish the run and single backs can’t handle the entire backfield on their own without it being too heavy a physical toll. they’re gonna need Fullbacks, heck, they’re gonna need Wingbacks.
I have to disagree about fullbacks being an afterthought and a Gadget. I totally agree that they’re unsung and don’t get the credit. They deserve, and I totally agree that they are putting their bodies on the line for very little admiration from the average fan much like an offensive lineman that only gets noticed when they make a mistake. But the idea that they’re just a gadget and that they’re not important really gets thrown out the window at the most important part of the game, which is the red zone. When you get to a goal line play and you’re trying to rush for a touchdown, regardless of who’s carrying the ball there is somebody playing the role of fullback blocking. And we still routinely see i-formations On goal line plays, which essentially means that you’re so-called gadget suddenly becomes One of the absolute crucial parts of any play involving a short yardage touchdown. And it’s not like short, yardage, touchdown, situations are rare they happen constantly, and are an integral part of the game.
i don’t see a reason for them to be blockers since the TE can block AND be used as a passing threat, where running backs are getting stronger and more agile kind of like a pseudo FB which makes the TE a better combo
Growing up a Vikings fan, Mike Alstott was infuriating. In 1998, Vikings had 1 regular season loss. It was because they couldn't tackle Alstott to save their lives. He was just untackleable. When Kevin O'Connell was hired, a lot of people wondered if there was still room for C J Ham on the team, because KOC's offense is very modern pass-heavy. But he's a people's coach, so he's managed to keep Ham at least somewhat relevant. He made a rather important catch Sunday vs. GB. Ham is kind of a favorite, both of fans and players, as he has local connections.

Essentially running backs like Derek Henry are kinda like fullbacks of back in the day except he doesn’t pass block
Literally bro. Now they got tightends doing the blocking cuz they using more outside zone runs
Until the 90s, FBs WERE RBs, not blocking backs.
There was NEVER a fullback like Henry. Now running backs like Christian Akoye , jim brown and Earl Campbell. They were like Henry.
@@TheNumbasign2back then hb and fb was essentially the same thing they used to call jim brown a fb

The Browns had a fullback but recently did a kinda oline hybrid thing where they used an undersized athletic center as extra beef.
Scott Matlock plays for the chargers and is also getting nice amount of play time
Fullback is 100% love of the game
yo deetalk can you do a video on safeties?
Thats on the board my boii. Keep on the lookout
To be fair while not listed as one, Taysom Hill also works as a Saints main fullback
As Edge Rushers get smaller to drop into coverage, Fullbacks will make a comeback .
Tim Wilson FB, blocked for Earl Campbell. But, he also ran the ball and was a very good pass catcher. Sigh. I miss those days.
