The reason Phelps was happy is because he never swam for records. He swam for passion. It is impossible to train as much as he did without a deep burning passion. The passion of the sport. And when you have this passion, you will be happy when a record is broken, even if it is your own.
Yes, we all start out doing it for enjoyment, but when Phelps was turning pro, he was asked by his agent "what did he want to do?" & he stated "to do something no-one has ever done" (8 gold medals in a single games) ergo break records
The breaststroke is unrecognisable now to what is was only a few years ago. A great part of the technique has more in common with butterfly than with 'traditional' breaststroke. This, in my opinion is the main reason for the faster time.
All records get beat. Phelps did more for the world with his swimming skills to create a whole new generation of swimmers in every country! And breast was his slowest leg so that does not surprise me.
It usually isn’t that athletes can’t achieve a certain time barrier like a world record or the next round number. It’s that they don’t know how to. Someone has to figure it out first. An example is the 2:03:xx marathon. Not long ago, that was considered almost impossible. Then it was achieved. Then the other elite marathoners adapted to this new reality of training and expectation. Now a dozen guys can do that. The same will happen in swimming. Paradoxically, the super suits may have slowed record progression because everyone was thinking “you need a super suit to do X, and I can’t use one now.”
An interesting thing about the breast stroke which I recently figured out is that it is the only stroke where the kick goes pretty much straight back, which is far more efficient than flutter kick or dolphin kick, where most of the energy goes up and down. Never could swim breast stroke because my feet just won't point out like that.... Now, if the over arm side stroke ever gets to be a competition stroke again, the record will drop a lot more.... Still need to get that video made... Life is getting in the way.
Slight error in your graphics: Michael’s WR in the 200 IM was 1:54.23. He set that in 2008 and Lochte broke it in 2009 with a 1:54.10 The 1:54.16 is his PB, set a mere .16 after Lochte in that famous 2011 shootout.
he did it without the "super suits", he was still in a tech suit just not a fully body one. those suits were banned within a year of release because they apparently granted an "unfair advantage".
If Michael had concentrated his efforts on a single event, he would be able to swim below 1:50 in the 200 butterfly and 4:00 in the 400 IM (he never loved this event).
Thanks for your amazing videos, I started swimming 2 years back 5 days / week following your drills. Flys and Free mostly, brought my speed under 2m doing 40 laps in 20 mins, what would otherwise have taken an hour. Not to mention the weight loss journey from over 200 lb to 172lb now, ideal for my height.
The Great Wayne Gretzky said... "records are meant to be broken" - makes the sport that much more interesting. However, I believe it will only be a matter of when, NOT if, someone sets an under 4 min 400M IM time. Whether that's Leon or the "next" Phelps in 10 or 20+ years. Look at Summer McIntosh, she owns the world record for the 400m IM (she's only 17 yrs old), and even more impressive, she is nearly 6 secs faster than the 2nd best in the world, which makes her feat that much more impressive! FYI: Records are great, but I'm more interested in how many Olympic Medals one has, especially gold ones!
Not a single person who broke one of Phelps records ever held all 5. None have even come close to 8 gold medals. Phelps stands with Spitz at the top of the swimming world.
"There was a time in the 1960s when breaking 5 minutes in the 400 IM seemed impossible" is an absolute exaggeration: the world record of 4:55.6 that you mention was broken in August 1961...
I wouldnt call him the best swimmer, you say that this stroke is like like triathlon, but people think 100m is the fastest, and best event, like usain bolt
"Leon smashed the record". Whaou, how on earth can Skills N'talents do that : he said Leon but without his name, just the forname ! Léon Marchand smashed the record of Michael Phelps.
what about Gretzky's assist record, Rice's receiving record, Ripken Jr's consecutive games played, those are still standing...which would make them more impossible than your already beaten record?
Im old but ive learnt that if you listen to the hair on your head you can assuage your speed. A couple of wrong moves demonstrated in this video i discovered in greece when i was swimming until exhausted but by chance realised that putting my head facing the sand on the bottom of the seabed my speed picked up .i was aware of my speed by utilising the senses of my hair. I improved drastically. All little other movement showed either a decrease or increase in my speed. I suppose its like blind people who can use their fingers to read braille
He was pointing out how they both have multiple disciplines that you need to be good at, not comparing their difficulty levels. No other event in track is like this.
Michael was always more interested in collecting as many medals he could than setting world records. Had he focused on single events, his records would still be there.

I agree that he had passion, but the man 100% swam for records also. He wrote down specific times he wanted to hit for every olympic race he ever did.
At his last Olympic race he also said that he was not satisfied with the result as he wanted a wr, so I think records Kent a lot for him
