How can Ukraine use its new tanks against Russia?

  • Russia is on the attack as Vladimir Putin pours soldiers into areas like Bakhmut in a bid to take the rest of the Donbas, but Leopard, Challenger and Abrams main battle tanks are on their way to the battlefield to face Moscow’s T72s, as Kyiv prepares for a major counteroffensive - but are these modern tanks enough to win the war and how will they change Ukraine’s tactics?
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Some experts say they are a “game-changer” but others believe they’re not a “wonder weapon”.
Instead, they signal the West’s commitment to Ukraine and they open the door for even more advanced weapons in the future like F-16 fighter jets and longer range precision missiles like ATACMS.
We look at the capability of the new armour compared to Russia’s main battle tank and how Ukraine could use them to repel Putin’s latest offensive.

Arguably the Challenger 2 is very underrated. However, it's history on the battlefield is second to none. If I were to criticize it in any way, it would be that it is restricted in what ammunition it can fire, due to it having a rifled barrel as opposed to the smooth bore barrel that the other tanks use. Hence it cannot use standard NATO rounds.

Considering how much is Ukraine infested with top attack anti-tank infantry missiles from the West, being T-72 crew is not a great prospect, not that Western tanks would fare better but Russia did not have top attack munition for its infantry and 90ties-early 2000 Western tanks can hold most of what Russians can throw on them frontally by infantry and prevalent modernized T-72.
So, if you are in a Russian modernized T-72 in Ukraine where anything including infantry can kill you from whatever angle while you are expected to fight also enemy tanks which late 90ties models like Challenger 2 you cannot reliably penetrate frontally, I say you are in the pretty bad tank.
The only saving grace for Russians in defensive positions that prevent them from ending like the Iraqis in First Gulf War is that Russians can use Ukraine's forests and infrastructure to attack from optimal angles where lack of penetration for frontal attacks against enemy tanks by most of their tanks and infantry won't matter, and the fact that neither side have true air dominance, thus Ukraine is a playground for various cost-efficient armed and surveillance drones guiding artillery that are the real game changer in this conflict, so having slightly better or worse tanks is not really a deciding factor...

Armored forces traditionally are employed in 2 ways. Tanks can be used for Infantry support operations - OR - they can be used enmasse to facilitate breaks in the lines. Ukraine lacks sufficient tanks to "spread them around" for Infantry support and based upon videos it appears they have largely been used as mobile gun platforms to shell positions or sometimes take out Russian vehicles. That coincidentally speaks to a need on the part of Ukraine for more fire platforms = artillery/mortars/rockets. Using a tank to shell a position is a waste of resources.
So the small number of western tanks involved + their superiority over Russian design tanks speaks to employing them as a means to cut through lines + and when required as reserve forces to halt Russian armored units attempting to do the same. Just as Ukraine did with Kherson whereby they faked out Russian forces in one area to attack in another to cut off forces above the Dnipro and capture the city = a battalion of western tanks in the hands of motivated Ukrainian troops can turn the Russian conscripts who frankly do not want to be there in their trenches. 🤔

Yes, Luhansk, Donbass, Zaphorizia are the most feasible regions for counter-offensive. The problem is that,
1 Luhansk borders Russian mainland so there is a hit from behind.
2 Donbass has been invaded since 2014 and is heavily fortified
Thus it leaves, Zaphorizia and Kherson.
Zaphorizia is the ideal target for offensive as most people say, yet I will not rule out Kherson. Why?
1 Hit the enemy where they least expect you.
2 Kherson does not have the high risk of being encircled and is too far from the Russian border.
3 Controlling more coastline means more control in the sea and shipping.

Escalating the proxy war this is. Despite the advantages of the western arms technologically, Ukraine will be dogged by problems of maintenance, maturity of experience and tactical adaptability to ensure effectiveness. These are no easy tasks for any professional army when introducing a variety of technologically advance equipment all at once. There's no Gandalf here to win the war by magic. and logically, looking at the resources and economic might, Russia will be able to manufacture replacements faster than Nato, especially with Chinese supply chain which carries Russian DNA. Will the supporting of Ukraine exhaust NATO's future defensive capability instead. What if ever this war takes a turn on them after the collapse of Kiev? Optimism is very expensive here.

There is decades between a Leopard 2 A4 - which is a bit outdated now - the A6 which is already among the best in the world and the most modern versions A7+ and A7V, which are the most modern in the world along the newest versions of the Abrams. And even that is being replaced with either the MGCS or the KF51 Panther. 100 or even 200 western tanks won’t be a game changer. Ukraine needs quantity. In this respect 180 1960s Leopard 1s are probably more helpful than 31 Abrams or 14 Challengers.

you have to remember how much of Russia's armored assets have been destroyed, they are running out of t-72 and recommissioning t-52s. Russia might be willing to throw endless bodies at this war but they do not have the production capabilities to continuously supply MBTs (especially when they keep getting destroyed by $110,000 stinger missiles when a t-72 costs a few million LOL)
Ukraine however is being supplied MBTs, albeit in small numbers so far, by many many different countries. over time the Ukrainians will be able to stock up a larger fleet of armor than Russia and by doing it slowly and as a joint effort across many countries i believe the goal of the EU countries and USA is to supply Ukraine without putting a serious strain on their own production capacity/inventory

The 3G battle tanks are NOT invincible (obstruction by way of tank traps and against overwhelming numbers of sacifical T72s) unless adequately supported by infantry with mobile armoured vehicles (Bradleys) and effective anti-tank UAVs or battle damage tolerant A-10s NOT F16s which are more politically sensitive to the West.

So far they committed to send a pidely amount of modern tanks, that will not be decisive unless quantities are increased. For example, the US deployed 1725 Abrams tanks to Iraq and 2250 Bradleys. By comparison they have only committed 32 Abrams, and 60 Bradley's so far to Ukraine...sorry not a game changer! Russia still has thousands of tanks left to deploy as needed.

Planning to supply Ukraine with Western jets in the medium term should continue, but supplying MiG's would help plug the gap.
