Watch Rafał Blechacz play Debussy's "Sarabande" from his new DG recording featuring piano works by Szymanowski and Debussy. The young pianist is by talent, proclivity, and nationality the perfect choice to record works by his fellow Pole, Szymanowski. And therefore to record Debussy, too -- whose presence in Szymanowski's musical DNA looms large.
For the first time on record Rafał Blechacz plays Szymanowski's reverie-inducing music -- a revelation to those unfamiliar with it. Debussy's Impressionist soundscapes (also new to Rafał Blechacz's discography) -- including Pour le piano and Estampes -- are a natural fit for a Chopin expert such as he.

I've heard this piece for 50 years, and probably 50 pianists; some slower, some faster. I am always sensitive to people rushing through Debussy to prove their technical chops and he NEVER shows off. While this is on the faster side, it passes the "slow and serious elegance" test; unhurried, but without yielding to oversentimentality which is the other danger. And his pedal work and harmonics beautifully, which is where most Debussy interpreters shine or fade. He shines. I like his work!
Brawo Rafał Blechacz. Genialny pianista i wielki mistrz.
I personally like this tempo. It's more flowy like leaves blowing in the woods on a breezy autumn day. ❤
Oh brother.... people in here complaining about the tempo need to understand that this is just one person's interpretation of it. Personally, I like it at the faster tempo & he has plenty of rubato & delicacy in this performance. The slower tempos just drag to me. I like variations of tempos because until metronomes became available to everyone, many pieces (esp. Baroque) can be played at MANY different tempos.
This is truly a beautiful piece by Debussy! It's one of my favorite Debussy works. When i hear most people play Debussy then tend to play it with a more "flowy, romantic" feel, as if Debussy was a romantic composer, but his works are from the impressionistic era, and should be played with a more "meditative" feel.
THIS PIECE AND CLARE DE LUNE ARE MY FAVORITES FROM DEBUSSY, BOTH HERE WERE BEAUTIFULLY PLAYED BY MR. BLECHACZ, HE HAS BEEN GIVEN A PRICELESS GIFT FROM GOD TO PLAY THIS WELL AND FOR ONE SO YOUNG, HE DOES
Fabulous! Absolutely fabulous! I have no doubt this reading would have convinced Debussy himself.
It is a little fast, but I think he nailed the rhythm and brought out the really gorgeous harmonies that this piece has. We must remember that a sarabande is a dance, originally from Latin America and later a French form of dance. I don't think the dancing aspect is lost here, because to play too slow would remove that entirely. The recording on Blechacz's CD is a but slower than in this video.
fantastic, top pianist and artist
It's his interpretation. Try to imagine, that you've never heard that before.
This is gorgeous! How could anyone possibly dislike it?! I can't wait to add this CD to my Rafal Blechacz collection.
I agree! Well said.
Seriously looking forward to this recording...
Indeed.
No! It's not too fast! It's absolutely right - just listen!!
I don't understand Debussy at all but this is beautiful
A quick look at the other interpretations on RUclips show that they almost all run near or above 5 minutes for the piece he plays in 4:15.
a masz jakiś link na RUclips z wykonaniem Bunina?
No metronome markings but "avec un elegance grave et lente." which means with a slow, serious elegance.
What the heck he plays F# twice instead of G# as written @ 2:38
I actually liked it a lot, until he blazed through the quartal harmonies at measure 23. . . It's interesting to hear it faster, though. You can't hang on to the individual chords as much, so you have to hear the progressions a little more.
Ruh roh! What happened to the G# at 2:38 and 2:44?! I tried to listen to it objectively but I still feel it's a bit too fast.
Yeah I think so too...
Blecharz gra równo i metrycznie pozbawiając utwór płynnej rozlewności i dobija każdy dźwięk.Ale oczywiście co się komu podoba. Ja jestem fanem interpretacji Iwana Bunina - nomen, omen też laureata Konkursu Szopenowskiego.
A touch too fast for my liking, but beautifully played nonetheless.
I think this is a little fast too strict. This is Debussy, it needs too be more free. But, for what this is, your performance, it sounds beautiful :)
Yes, i a little fast, but it is a wonderful performance too ;)
Man that music at the end was probably the ballad of Richard Nixon.
Obviously it is his interpretation, but I just get the sense that it is rushed. Of course, I'm prejudiced by the interpretations I've heard before. I have never seen the sheet music for this piece and don't know if there are metronome markings but going based only on my personal taste that has admittedly been coloured by other interpretations, I feel like the sultry, and the sensual have been diminished by his choice of tempo.
Le tempo n'est pas si mal, il joue bien!
What's the rush??
wowowow, You're catching a train or something?
"Good composers don't borrow, they steal" ~ Igor Stravinsky
2:50
too fast?
Lovely touch, but, especially in the opening section, this pianist does not play the minims in full. The dancers would have been tripping over themselves!
chato
Way too fast. Emil Gilel played this perfect!
It's nice, but i don't quite get why a great would bother with these impressionist composers. No one looks like they are about to cry when playing Debussy (as they may with Brahms, Schubert, or Beethoven)...Tepid depictions of mood
Des Headland Oh, listen to Clair de Lune or Rêverie and tell me you're not crying!
Why would you ever need to cry listening to music for it to be good? You not liking impressionist composers doesn’t make their music bad. I personally hate Mozart, but I’ll never say no great interpret should be playing his music.
anyone else feel this is rushed?
Not 'alf, missus.
Awfully rushed, I think. A sarabande is a stately dance and this pace wouldn't work for that. (But otherwise I do admire the pianist's technique.)
didn't feel any soul in it tbh
