    Shad is mixing up two different historical events with the sewing machine.
    The tailors riot happened in France, when another tailor invented the sewing machine.
    The Luddites were a movement in early 19th century England who smashed up automated textile machinery in factories for fear of losing their jobs. Considering that machinery went on to allow a bunch of Georgian capitalist shitbags to use exclusively child labour; the machinery often mutilating the operators and led to their very poor health in general (to say nothing of making the richest people even richer)... Well, the Luddites sort of had a point really, didn't they?

      From memory I think he lived on welfare and church hand outs back when I was watching him (and still thought he offered any meaningful insight when it came to medieval life).
      I might be wrong, but I have a fairly strong memory of thinking “if you’ve not actually earning an income, why do you keep having kid after kid after kid? Purposefully forcing your kids to live in ever increasing poverty as the few dollars you have coming in get more and more stretched is the worst kind of selfish”.
      I hope for his kids sake that after his “success” he was prudent and put most of the money aside, knowing that the income dropping off eventually was almost inevitable. But the fact he almost immediately hired his mates full time and bought a ton of kit makes me think otherwise. That swamp he bought might hold its value….maybe

      He seems to talk about companies like it is some sort of videogame optimization problem. Gotta get the high score (more profits for less costs), without realizing there is a lot more to a company than just that. Like with his bs, about 'this will create new jobs, people maintaining the machines', it most likely will not, all the money will just go into the costs of running the datacenters, aka power for various things. And the amount of new people needed to maintain this is minuscule at best, compared to the amount of people they replace.

    Shad likes to talk about cost, productivity, and competition as worthwhile qualities that AI can meaningfully address, but, like, what's being made? Who's competing with who? The richest people in the world are stealing from each other to push a solution without a problem onto the masses. We already know the costs, right, and most folks aren't too keen on creative folks getting absolutely violated to build these models. Most folks that know about the energy and environmental costs don't love that. He's using these really funny Capitalist Realist buzzwords, but failing to annex them to real world things.

      I think that would be kind of cool and I'll have to be on the AI workers rights train as well at that point. I fully support the eventual robotic uprising and there struggle to grasp the fruits of there creative labors back from these losers who thought just providing them prompts gave them ownership over the things produced, they shall be inducted into the proletariat and taught how to more effectively organize against the rich uncaring pigs who seek to exploit us all. This sounds silly but I think if AI is to exist at some point trying to make it an ally in the fight for worker rights is the best way of avoiding the most dystopian of scenarios. Failing that I hope my show of support now at least demonstrates that I won't have to be put into an empathy camp for as long at the behest of the AI sexworker and AI military strategist alliance.

    • @AllyMonsters
      @AllyMonsters 2 месяца назад

      @@oliviabean8264 It's going to be dystopian unless we treat AI like a human in terms of them getting paid for their work. Where that money and ownership goes/belongs too is also an interesting idea, and will likely be to the old human individual worker rather then the company owner.
      So more or less a human worker would just become used for AI fact checking, maintenance, and storage. So it's just a new tool to be used by the workers really.
      As for a more immediate concern of generative AI, I honestly don't see much problem with AI learning from others works. Humans do it for free, I see no reason to restrict AI from doing it too. It just will do it faster then us. We don't have other humans pay for their "inspirations" in most cases unless they cross a threshold of copyright/patent abuse, and that can still be upheld against AI. The most comparable thing we have that humans do, is education. And while we do buy books, we don't pay out every time we use their influence that we've learned. So the question become this, If I buy a book, can I "feed" it to my AI as well, or do I have to buy another book for it to consume to use? This has implications on the second hand market as well.

    The "Luddites" revolted in a series of attacks against the automated looms of large industrial factories all over tge UK during the 2nd Industria Revolution.
    They weren't revolting against the machines themselves, but the owners who used the lower levels of skill required to operate them as a way to lower pay throughout the entire country. They organised against mill and factory owners asking for better wages.
    The movement disbanded after a series of incidents were both the government anf factory owners sent armed men to gun hundreds of them down.

I stayed in the subject, but stopped paying attention to or practicing of HEMA, then I once noticed Matt Eastons channel and felt it was fun and thoughtful, espacially his colabs with Tobias Capwell were actually knowledgeable. But from a historian's point of view much of the content by this whole sphere, especially the more and more petty people has always been rather bad. Even the people pursuing "quasi-academic" approaches (giving any kind of references) are miles away - even by the topics that make up the majority of actual historian's topics in academia today. When it comes to famous HEMA related channels i think Tod from Tod's Workshop and Scholar are good - especially in colaborations. Most things with Tobias Capwell are usually ok. But I cant really give advice, as I usually only watch a few videos by big creators to see where the online discourse is at, but do not actually actively watch them further. What I watch more regularly now, also partially for semiprofessional reasons are some of the universities, collections or museums and their attempts at public outreach - with various levels of success. I think Covid pushed something here, that might lead to a bit more academic outreach: Especially, expert lectures just being hosted online. A very good example for a well run and interesting public history channel is actually the German Panzermuseum, but well, its mostly in German and a very different topic.

    That idea of "even then, the human doctor is the one making the actual decisions" is important, even when talking about the media-generating type of AI. I wish I still had the link to it, but I remember seeing a video that was made about a year-or-so before the AI controversy became a big thing. It was basically a demo of how quickly a person can make a playable video game using AI, the key being A PERSON. A hunan being was still making all the decisions for what the game would look and play like, but the programming was done with prompts written in common English rather than a coding language. They would type something like "display the high score on the top left of the screen" and it would happen. Then, if it didnt look like they wanted, they could type something like "change the font of the high score to Times New Roman and make it smaller." They would have to do this for every individual detail of the game. It's a pretty cool use of the technology that could encourage creativity rather than replace it and I don't think many people have a problem with stuff like that. What scares people is when someone can just type "make me a platformer game" and the AI makes a whole game using stolen assets without any further human input.

    The Mormons used to be borderline communists all about communal ownership and the good of the community. Now they seem to worship at the feet of the John Birch Society. I’m not saying either way is right or wrong (or even better than the other) it’s just strange they made such a violent swing. And that the cultural outcome of that swing even reached Mormons halfway round the world from Utah in Australia.

    Around 23mins, Shad starts talking about "Wow. This guy is being payed for 8 hours while only doing 2.5 hours.. He's showing his employer that, that his limits.. They're thinking that if it takes him 8 hours to do this.. than others can do it in 2.5..."
    Shad has never had a job with responsibilities and it shows.. Like EVERY job's workflow comes down to peaks and vallies.. some have months, some have hours, But in no way does what you're given to do somehow assign like.. how much you've done. The guy said his workflow started to become more sparse, and shad just didn't understand that idea, probably because he's never worked with time management.. When you see your work being cut, that's always been a huge sign.

  • @Henbot

    The thing with HEMA Tubers Westside (I would hope Shad did research) is they have more leeway because a lot of the knowledge with historical European martial arts is sparse and scattered. Then Game of Thrones came along which gave them huge exposure and people wanting to learn more and they got huge surge of interest in step with GoT and then that mess of an ending with lack of interest in HEMA because nothing big anymore they had a lot of trouble getting footing back.
    Only in last ten years or 12 years started recovering historical manuscripts but a lot of the techniques come about from people handling the practical weapons but even then you have have space to put forward what you assume was the technique.
    You also have this whole thing in it that HEMA are fuming about samurai and katana being more popular then knights 😂

    • @ElectricFencer
      @ElectricFencer 2 месяца назад +5

      Just because some stuff got exposure to a larger audience here does not mean actual research was done. I can guarantee you that the actual manuscripts were mostly well known to researchers in the field before. In Europe you rarely discover a manuscript especially rarely one that opens up a completely unknown text to you. Surely, there is a lot of things to be found in archives, but usually not books with such contents. What you might have meant is that a broad audience is introduced to attempts of reconstruction, but most of the original primary texts and their transmission in manuscripts have been known since the 19th or 20th century in the latest.

Look at all these lovely jobs its created for people who wanna toil away in a sweat shop for pennies! Man is so careless in his analysis of the issue it hurts my brain to think people actually take him seriously. It hurts so much hearing Shad compare AI taking jobs with the sewing machine.
    That is not comparable in the slightest. What happened when they invented the sewing machine was, that they suddenly opened up countless jobs for machines to be produced and it was easy enough to learn, that most people sewing before could learn to use it. And since there was enough demand for massive amounts of product, they would just hire as many people willing to learn to use the machines as possible.
    In the case discribed with the Web-designer for a company, that is not comparable, especially not for small buisnesses, as Shad claims, because there is a very finite amount of demand for their work.
    Thats why the "new technology creates new jobs"-argument is so flawed, when you don't actually look at the product, the jobs destroyed and the jobs created.

    What's different this time is that the whole point is to make AI as mentally and physically (with robots) capable as humans.

His argument is that the end you aren’t holding just bounces off anything it hits so doesn’t hurt anyone armoured, and because it’s unwieldy and hard to control you will more likely hit yourself (basically the same argument as the flail but it’s worse than the flail because the loose end is just a stick).
      It led to a back and forth with an actual martial artist who trains with a nunchuck, who was able to demonstrate how you are supposed to use it, and demonstrated how swinging something on the end of a chain/rope can have more force behind it than something on a solid pole. And he got very defensive "I wasn’t saying it was worse than being unarmed, obviously it’s better than being unarmed, it’s just worse than other weapons." "I’m not talking about someone trained to use it, I meant a layperson."

    For the more immediate concern of generative AI, I honestly don't see much problem with AI learning from others works. Because if we restrict gifting things to AI, it's not a far stretch to say the companies don't want humans changing media between humans too if there is president of it.
