    Done the same upgrade to my Legion 5 (two 8gb Fury Impact sticks and additional storage). I had three guitar picks of different thicknesses, and the thinnest got me in around the fan vents and I then used the second largest to wedge it off without any damage. For the rest of the laptop I used the largest pick. Totally worth it - Horizon Zero Dawn was around 58 fps at 1440p ultimate quality and it's now 85 fps (using the benchmark). I use 60 fps vsync in games which keeps the laptop from getting too hot and loud, so the improved lows help keep a noticeably more consistent 60 fps lock. The CPU temperature also seems to be a bit lower (not quite sure why that happens but definitely does).

      @Steve Co: Thanks for sharing. One comment from my side: Both GPU and CPU partly share the same cooling system (at least 1 heatpipe). Lower temperature of the GPU should then help the CPU run cooler, too. Additionally, if you cap the game to 60 FPS, the CPU no longer needs to work so hard either, which results in lower temps.

    Upgraded to 32GB Kingston Fury Impact RAM and 3TB NVMe 3.0 before I even switched it on. Did break 2 clips at the fan area opening it but it opened okay apart from that.

      Nice upgrade. 32 GB kit is most likely dual rank so you have gained even more performance. And yeah, those tiny clips are a trap.

      @@savvylayman Yeah, i understand you, BUT there WAS this RAM KF432S20IB1K2/32 which i CANT BUY now, not in stock...this Impact kit is 16gb x2 and Dual Rank! Reason why im looking on KVR32S22D8/16, its Kingston (the same HyperX or Fury brandmaker) + these are Dual Rank 22-22-22 with some higher subtimings...
      Copy first one, look at sheet and you will be surprised..then check 2nd Kingston one and tell me please, if these dual rank kingstons will be good for Legion 7?

    5:05 why latency is worst than with stock RAM? How to open laptop and dont broke these clips? Is there any hint/trick?

    • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman  2 года назад +3

      Write throughput is worse because stock RAM is internally organized in two bank groups (1Rx16), but the new RAM kit uses twice as many, i.e., four bank groups (1Rx8). So the memory controller needs to wait more cycles when using stock RAM.
      Concerning the clips, unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to do it properly. Perhaps you can start prying from the plastic grill where the air vents are located. But I'm just blindly guessing. By the way, the clips are not very important so I wouldn't worry about them too much. Good luck.

      I broke 2 clips..impossible to open without breaking them (near to side vent holes)... Changed RAM and yeah - performance is a lot better 👍

    Nice video! The Kingston Impact has cl20 timings only for XMP, which is currently not supported by AMD Ryzen, it is uses JEDEC cl22 timings, instead. Try Zen Timings or CPU-Z to be sure 😃. I ended up getting TimeTec's 2Rx8 cl22 16GBx2 kit.

      @@DavidGonzalezSamudio I bought the same Timetec ram sticks! I wonder what is more important, having RAM with faster CL timings or having dual rank over single rank?

      My Kingston kit runs at CL20, no problem.

  • @garyrayner6330
    @garyrayner6330 2 года назад +1

    Does the cl20 timing make it faster than cl22 or no affect at all? Most people I see get cl22 memory for this laptop but Kingston only do cl20.

    • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman  2 года назад +3

      CL20 will make it faster, especially when other primary and secondary timings are lower as well. However, this will most likely be visible only in synthetic benchmarks. If therefore CL22 kit is significantly cheaper, get that one instead.

  • @SofaKingA
    @SofaKingA 2 года назад +1

    Do you think having dual rank memory would have a bigger impact on performance than having faster CL timings?

    • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for your great question. The short answer is, no, you are always better off with lower CAS latency. You can read a bit more in this short article: www.cgdirector.com/single-rank-vs-dual-rank-ram/. We could go down the rabbit hole of secondary and tertiary memory timings but let's leave it at that for now. :)

    Nice video Bruh, you sounded like a Russian Jarrod Tech with a slower voice✌️😎 btw I upgraded the ssd on my legion 5 pro last week and I was so sad because I also damaged some of the plastic clips despite being so freakin careful in my disassembly, now I know it's really unavoidable😤 In the future I'mma be upgrading the ram too but I'm hesitant because opening the laptop again might damage more plastic clips😤 why can't lenovo design a laptop with only one freaking screw in it and make it easy for us to disassemble it for upgrades. I mean Dell already did it with their inspiron laptops, opening those is a breeze. Think of all the screws lenovo could save and also they could save us the time and effort for upgrading their slow stock ram. Haha Just sharing my opinion, God bless🙏😇

      Thanks for sharing. Since the back panel is held in place by 10 screws, I don't think the plastic clips are badly needed, but it's still frustrating to break them off like that. Good luck with your upgrade and may God bless you, too. 😇

    How it will work if I put one 32gb ddr5 4800 mhz and one 8gb ddr5 4800 mhz, with total of 40 gb ram ? I have already 2x 8 gb ddr5, but for beginning I would like to add one of 32 gb and to stay one of 8 gb ram, but dont know how those will work in pair, is it ok or not.

    • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman  Год назад

      Thanks for asking. I suppose you speak of a newer laptop model, because the one I reviewed in the video, used DDR4 sticks and the maximum RAM capacity it supported was up to 32 GB in total.
      Anyways, I would always go with two identical sticks. Desktop PCs are more forgiving, so they would likely boot, but I wouldn't bet on ideal timings. You can lose even more performance, because this is not a proper dual channel setup - the IMC (integrated memory controller) would only benefit from 16 gigs (8+8) in dual channel; the rest would run in a single channel.
      With laptops, it can easily happen the IMC would refuse to post with such asymmetric setup. I haven't tried it myself, though.
