SSD speed doesn't matter (much) for gaming!
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Many mainstream media outlets overemphasize the importance of your SSD speed for gaming. In this video, I'm looking at start-up as well as loading times of a few games to see how much one can save with faster drives. Spoiler: not much. One other advantage of not having a game stored at a too-fast drive is that many games show hints on their loading screens. While I had Assassin's Creed Origins ...

NVMe solid-state drives are a blessing... until they fail. I purchased two ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro drives. This model used to be the top pick for budget builds as it was cheap, reasonably fast and durable. At least on paper. It turned out mine "achieved" a 100% failure rate as they developed bad blocks relatively quickly and caused data loss. My ignorance then resulted in no valid backups availabl...

      Thanks for sharing. It's a shame ADATA never issued any recall or whatever. They must have known at this point. Kinda like Intel tried to sweep the situation with their 13th and 14th gen under the rug. ADATA was apparently more successful in doing so. Hope you didn't lose any important data.

    When my ssd is in it's usual prime position trapped between the cpu and gpu, it's easy for my samsung 970 to creep up to 60c when I'm ignoring temps and leaving fans on default settings, without major continuous file transfers taking place. It first happened when I was playing Still Wakes the Deep (unreal engine 5) on ultra settings. I may consider moving the main windows OS ssd below the gpu, which might lead to lower temps (I haven't tested), but I have much better temps now after keeping my gpu fans on (zero rpm off, and kept on but at a low level when idle) and making the gpu fan increase from lower temps than before. Libre Hardware Monitor allows me to see the ssd temp in Afterburner whilst running anything in full screen. Front case fans blowing over the ssd works well but makes a minimal difference to ssd temp, at least compared to keeping my graphics card cool. Obviously when the gpu is not in use and file transfers are what overheat an ssd, then a much better radiator would be the option as above, and more case fans at higher settings

    People seem to hate this program, but I'd wager it's user error or them trying to use it on X3D chips...with single CCDs. My 9950x works wonders, dropped my power usage down to 35W on idle and desktop, and dropped TWENTY celsius on gaming.Dropped some on multi threadded workloads. 5.5Ghz while gaming, 4.9Ghz average while rendering videos if the CPU isn't at 100% usage. Pretty fantastic program; props to this guy. IT applied a VERY aggresive undervolt, and as someone on an air cooler, I appreciate the temps... So far my 9950x is 100% stable at -36 on CCD0 and -40 on CCD1

The supplied voltage is not too low to immediately crash the system, but low enough so the CPU has to drop the clocks significantly. I think this whole procedure can take a fraction of a second. • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for asking, @Dont-Evan-Bother. Samsung 970 EVO is a PCIe gen 3 drive, whereas Seagate Lightsaber is a PCIe gen 4 drive. Gen 4 drives do run hotter due to higher compute load on their ASIC, which results in a significantly higher throughput. I suppose you measured the difference of 30 °C on the ASIC controller, correct? This is usually the highest temperature reported by the drive. On 970 EVO, it is called Drive Temperature 3 in HWiNFO. May I ask what temperature you actually read? Even if the drive reaches 90 °C for short periods of time, I wouldn't worry it too much. However, the drive's lifespan could decrease if it runs this hot for 24*7. Concerning the heat sink touching the backplate of 7900 XTX, it's not ideal. That GPU dumps tons of hot air right onto the NVMe SSD. What motherboard do you use? My Asus mobos based on X570 chipset support PCIe 4.0 specs across all NVMe slots. If this is the case with your motherboard, I would recommend moving the drive to a lower slot. Yes, there is a small latency penalty but nothing significant. Oh, and my assumption is your case provides enough airflow.

There are many things I love about B&O Portals, but truth be told, there are two downsides I dislike. 1. When PC is connected via the dongle & smartphone is connected via Bluetooth at the same time and one loses connection (e.g., dongle because I go too far), the other connection disconnects as well. This can go over and over until I go back to the PC or disconnect it manually. 2. Touch controls are not great. They are placed at a spot where I sometimes accidentally touch them when I put the headphones on or take them off. I would prefer physical buttons like B&W PX have. DRAM calculator worked alright for selected popular OC dies. The tool as such is technically a lookup table, not a calculator. Nice video. Does the WHEA-Logger log only get written when running the powershell script? When mine reboots say extracting a zip file to the NVME drive, there is nothing written to that log. Not even sure how it can. Think normally when a crash and reboot happens the log is the last thing to be updated. Also for me I can hammer on the CPUs all day with a all core offset of -25. It's also not at idle when it crashes. For me it's when extracting a zip file or installing Windows updates. Something I have read several others have issues with. Not sure if idling for a period can simulate this scenario.

    • @savvylayman
      @savvylayman Год назад

      Thanks for asking. WHEA *should* be logged every time Windows kernel detects a hardware error. Well, in my experience, it doesn't always do that. When your system crashes, I would choose one of the following options: 1. Decrease negative offset by 2 points (i.e., increase voltage) for the best cores. These are in most cases the ones, which struggle, because they want to boost high. 2. Decrease negative offset for all cores by 2 points. 3. Use Hydra to determine the best curve. But I would recommend to stick to classic PBO2 curve instead of going for Hybrid OC. For some reason, HOC acts strange in the last two updates or so.

    I use Fmax enhancer alongside curve optimizer with +0.025 voltage offset and I'm getting 5175mhz single core clocks on 5950x. 4950mhz without Fmax and only curve optimizer. That's also with about 200hrs of corecycler and occt single core testing for curve stability. You have to have LLC on auto because Fmax enhancer will be controlling voltages. Changing LLC levels will mess up Fmax enhancer. But I believe The Stilt said this feature was meant to be used with a positive voltage offset.
