As a 1 year long 6950 XT user, I can say the card is excellent for gaming. Unfortunately professional applications like the Adobe Suite and 3D rendering software underperform massively considering the power of the GPU. Hopefully ROCm + HIP can fix that but it's still really janky.
Thanks for sharing. Yes, professional applications still suffer without CUDA. And it's a shame. I hate being locked in a specific ecosystem. Time will tell if this situation ever changes for the better or worse.
I just got the Powercolor Red Devil for around $600. Its a beautiful card im waiting on a PSU so i still havent tried it out but Im extremely Excited to try it this weekend.
I've opted for a used 3090 3 months ago and I have no issues so far, wanted to stick to the platform because of some creative workloads where I know Nvidia is a plug and play solution and AMD needs some fiddling usually (I'm also coming from a 3080 10GB version). The card was mostly fine for my gaming purposes I just needed more VRAM for other workloads. Seeing a brand new 6950XT around the same price as my used 3090 is very tempting though, it looks like a good deal! Enjoy
One of the reasons I didn't consider a used RTX 3090 was that most of them were involved in Ethereum mining. 3090 had a design problem, i.e., some GDDR6X chips were placed on the rear side of the PCB where there was poor heat dissipation. These VRAM chips would always make the card thermally throttle, which must have reduced its lifespan. I didn't want to risk purchasing such lemon. Hope you were able to obtain a newer LHR variant and that it will serve you well for years to come. Cheers for your comment.
@@savvylayman Yeah I'm aware I took some risk with buying it. But so far I'm quite happy, fan is kind of silent usually and the performance is better than how it was with my 3080, not much, but that was expected (10-15%). I did the upgrade mainly because of the VRAM. The most intensive workload I was doing with the card so far was probably training models in Stable Diffusion, after doing it for a few hours the hotspot temp at max was around 90c, it's definitely kind of hot but nothing out of ordinary by the specs. Maybe doing a repaste (repad) later could help with managing the temps. The seller offered me a "1 week warranty" so if I notice anything weird I was able to bring the card back, thankfully nothing concerning happened.
very nice review short and well scripted but one small section in drivers bothers me a bit on Nvidia side of the discussion you seem knowledgeable on tuning software , so how did forget about something like NVCleanstall on techpowerup which almost address all your complaint two notes you didn't mention did use DDU(Display Driver Uninstaller) to clean your old NVidia drivers correctly or not ? which could hurt performance or affect stability if Resizable BAR in bios setting is enabled (SAM) for amd (also intel arc) comes with healthy performance uplift in some (to all games for arc gpus) games more than Nvidia side
Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. Yes, I did use DDU to remove the leftover Nvidia drivers. And thanks for mentioning Resizable BAR / SAM. I always keep it enabled and I should definitely mention this at least in the video description. I'll update it right away. Regarding NVCleanstall, this utility is indeed useful, but I focused on the "stock" condition of the drivers here. Perhaps I can cover it in a separate video. Thanks again for your comment.
You are right and it's sad. Both AMD and NVIDIA want to sell their new GPU series and I bet these older RX 6000 as well as RTX 3000 are eating their profit. While I'm not a big fan of Intel, I wish them good luck in GPU space, because the more players there are in this market, the better for us - consumers. EDIT: Most gamers are completely happy with the older generation of cards, especially when the new ones are not worth the premium.
@@chocwah If money is not a problem and you don't care about performance per dollar metrics, go for 7900 XT. Otherwise, 6950 XT is a very tempting option.
Not sure I understand what exactly you are looking for, but let me try. On my PC, Display submenu can be found under Gaming tab. Is it really missing in your case? By the way, what GPU do you use? Cheers.
@@savvylayman I mean i think i have found the solution. Problem was that theres was no "display" tab in amd adrenalin i have 6950xt. 5:18 at the bottom left under advanced you have AA/AF etc, can be set global or game specific, this can also be done with clock speeds both global/game level.
@@Drubonk That option doesn't work anymore, since a couple of years ago. You can read up online about it. Neither Adrenaline nor RadeonPro have working AF options, nor vsync, for most games. Which means you're buying a GPU that's up to a grand, just for you to have blurry textures in-game, whenever the game doesn't have its own AF options, which there's plenty of indie and AAA games that lack native AF options. Unless it changed recently it's still broken. Broken for years and unless they fixed it it'll remain broken forever.
@@savvylayman It would be nice if you could actually test this and see if it's still around, since as I said posts about it range in age. It would be nice if you could check them or other games you know of that do not have AF inside the options. DS:R is another game without AF IIRC.
I upgraded from an RX 580 4GB to an RX 6950 XT, and the performance uplift is incredibly impressive.
