    Ughhhhh! Girl, I just found thrips on my gorgeous Vanda. She started dropping her beautiful blooms and I noticed those nasty little buggers crawling on one of the fallen blooms! I’m filling up my tub with water now, and submerging my poor Vanda. Thanks for posting this, you’re awesome.

    Good luck Maria...looks like the worse pest out of all the pests...And to think i once wanted to have my orchids all outside year round..Oh NO NO Not anymore Boo....No Lizards or Frogs hiding in my pots or hanging out on the leaves...Oh NO...i won't even mention the SNAK* word....and now Thrips....UGH!..just kidding..i will bring them all out every Spring and enjoy them outside until the fall...LOL...hopefullly without Thrips...can't imagine dunking every single one...well i do do that in the Summer to fertilize them...so much easier...But i wish you luck...you've had such a terrible year with tragedy after tragedy and you keep right on doing what you do with a smile on your face...You should be commended. Happy Growing!

    Dear, you are not alone. One of my larger cattleya recently bloom a bit deformed and lots of discoloration through out the pedals. One bloom was not too bad so I photographed it. A week later as I was checking out the photo and zoomed in...... What The H__!! is that on my blooms? Yep!!! Is them little Devils. It could be an infestation going on around here. I will start baptizing right away. Please update and let me know how it worked out for you.

      OH NO!!! I am so sorry to hear...the Listerine in my garden seemed to have worked well...although I can't be certain if it was the listerine or the colder weather...but needless to say...they are gone and I am happy!!! Hoping you will get rid of those nasty plant sucking monsters!!!

    Hi Maria. I am so sad to see your beautiful Vanda blooms infested and withered prematurely! I experienced a thrips attack last year on my Phalaenopsis collection. I was so upset because I waited for a whole year to get the blooms and soon after they bloomed or spiked, the flowers and the tips of the spikes were chewed by these little bastards. Fortunately they did not kill my phals. My phals are spiking again at this time of year. So far, I don't see any thrips. I hope you will get rid of them ASAP.

      Thank you...and aren't they so horrible!!!! I can't stand them!!! I'm glad to hear that yours recovered well from them are spiking again! WHEW!!! THANK GOODNESS! ...and yes I am hoping that I will destroy their entire generation!!! THEY WILL LEARN TO NEVER MESS WITH ME AGAIN... (at least I hope) ...fingers crossed!

    Orthene is Acephate. The U.S. annually uses 4-5 million pounds of acephate. However, even in small quantities, acephate throws off the navigation systems of white-throated sparrows and other songbirds, making them unable to tell north from south. Keep using Listernine - it's safer.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  7 лет назад +1

      ...but if the thrips continues to kill off my flowers and spikes...and eventually my vandas...I have to tell you there will be a lot of white throated sparrows and song birds zig zagging through the sky, confused and trying to figure out what direction they are going...LOL!!! Just joking...but on a serious note I am trying out the Listerine...which seems to be working so far...fingers crossed....either that or they are being effected by the cooler weather...I will hold off unless I am left with no option.

    I don’t care this 4 years ago video. Yes dont give up even it’s so frustrating with thrips. Dangnamit with thrips. Yasss I just finished my battles with them as I put on this comment, i need to let it out of my system. Today is not a very good day to start but I’ve done much to protect them. In additional perhaps this tips can help gardener that’s just love flowering plants, Try to avoid planting/placing your orchids together with ornamental flowering plants. Just so happen that my ytt, jasmines and gardenias flowering at the same time my mimi palmer, onc coco and 1 cattleya just started to bloom. It’s like an open buffets for pest to dine in 😤

    Is the Listerine still working for you? What kind of preventive schedule do you use?

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  4 года назад

      Listerine has worked in several cases...but I must admit I have had to resort to the heavy duty insecticides of which I absolutely hate but in my growing environment have not been able to avoid. I have gotten certain beetles and also grasshoppers that do not respond to the treatment.

    I use 409 cleaner with rubbing alcohol for mites. would this work? the only sign showing on my vandas is girdled roots and brown areas on the new root tips that then stop growing... didn't know what it was until I did some research!

    Use biological insecticide Neem oil or Neem based to treat for the thrips

    • @PictureMaria1

      From my experience, it is just a normal occurrence. Best course of action is preventative maint. She could have gotten a plant from somebody that was already infested without her knowledge also and then they spread from there! Very common and really nothing you can do other than spray spray spray! At least every two weeks.

    i use malathione, available at lowes by spectracide. it's a concentrate, you use 1 teaspoon per gallon h2o. i never need a whole gallon so i use a eyedropper and and add a few drops to a cup of water. check the dilution info on the bottle, and convert it to smaller quantities. do NOT use more than recommended dilution, you will burn the plant. do not use as a soil drench! you will kill the plant. its only used as a leaf spray. i always wet the plant with a water spray first, then spray the malathione. this stuff will clean your thrips problem up presto. keep your space sterile and move the plants in after they are treated and you won't see thrips again for 6 months or a year. another good product readily available is the stuff made from chrysanthemum petals.there are many brands but the ingredient is prethrins, 0.02%, and piperonyl butoxide, 0.20%. again wet the plants first before spraying. as to the orthene product, ortho has taken it off the market due to toxicity, i think, but they still sell a product for fire ants. orthene is a systemic insecticide which means you drench the soil and the roots uptake the poison and the bugs feeding on the juices get it and die. the ingredient in orthene is acephate, google that and see the options. i would not use it indoors, and wear a respirator if you do decide to try it. i still have a bottle from the 70's, but i never use it anymore. i don't like the smell or the fact you are supposed to discard your clothes after spraying it.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you. I started using asphate and I haven't had any problems with the thrips or other insects since. Although it does have such a horrid smell to it.

    • @bobs5596
      @bobs5596 6 лет назад +1

      hi there, yes remember if you can smell it you are breathing it in. i think it's shown to cause cancer. wear gloves and cover yourself up head to toe. i am afraid of that one.
      malathione can be used to wash your hair for lice and spray your cat/dog for fleas. directions say it can be used up to the day of harvest. it's great for mosquitoes, it's the stuff the trucks spray in neighborhoods at night to control them. if you have a flea outbreak in your basement, this is the stuff to use.
      the pyrethrin is probably the safest, it deactivates in sunlight the next day. so spray it in the evening. i am always worried about adverse reactions of the plant being sprayed. i have orchids , afr violets, and ornamental cacti. seems to be no harm.
      the only thing that i do not like is all the little spiders will be killed. they are natures predators, and i encourage them an my collection. i get them off the plant before i spray. you can blast them off with water first, then spray.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much for the extra information on this. I am going to have to pick some up. That is the main thing I hate about asphate....it can be quite hazardous to the environment and even to our own safety. I have seen a couple of lizards that did not survive the spraying and was really quite sad about it...because my frogs and lizards are my garden pets as well. So I would love to switch to something that is safer. Again thank you so much for sharing! :)
