      I actually used a soddering tool...that is usually used for melting wires....etc...it has a sharp pointed metal tip that heats up and melts a hole right through the plastic. You can find them in hardware stores and also walmart and are very inexpensive.

    Hello Maria, thank you for sharing all that information with us all. I
    have a dendrobium nobile that just finished blooming and the leaf at the
    very top just turned yellow and fell off, the rest of the plant is green and beautiful. What are your on the yellowing a leaf there? And last but not least, your plant has canes with no leaves, what's can be expected to see from them? I have a few as well.
    Thanks

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      Good question...it is quite common for Dendrobium Nobiles to lose their leaves...so no panicking....and what you can expect from them is possible rebloomers or keikis in the next coming bloom season...not to mention that they store energy and nutrition for the rest of the orchids...so they are greatly needed...sometimes not so attractive...but very needed in keeping the plant healthy, safe and sound. :)

    We always need to be so careful with what we bring into our collections.. especially with some of this stuff comimg into Florida from who knows where. A few weeks ago I bought six NOID Catts that were in bud and looked very healthy, but when the first one started to open I noticed a very slight colorbreak and didn't worry too much about it until the others started opening. Yep, they were all the same. I wasn't taking a chance and trashed them real quick. I ran into the same vendor last weekend and noticed the same exact thing. I look at a lot of orchids when I'm out and about, Maria, and I am now at the point where I no longer trust some of who I thought to be top-notch growers in the past. So far, though, our friends at Better-Gro are delivering good stock and I always try to get to HomeDepot when their truck pulls in on Mon, Wed and Fri, just to check out what's going on.. :) Enjoy.

      @johnbenedictorchids5207 9 лет назад

      Also, Maria... be very, very careful with the slightest sign of Black Rot Fungus which can wipe out a whole Catt right before your eyes, and anything near it. A simple splash of water from an infected plant to another is all it takes to spread... even raindrops off an infected plant to a plant below it is all it takes or a breeze if the plant is outdoors...

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад

      John Benedict ORCHIDS YIKES!!!! Thank you so much for mentioning the dangers!! They are all guaranteed andI am keeping a close eye on them...if they show the slightest bracketing again...I fear I will have to do the same and trash them...this is the sad fact that no one wants to talk about but indeed sometimes there is no light at the end of the or HID tunnel...I shall do a part 2 to this to talk about "The Dark Side" of growing orchids.... :(

      +Hugo Pimentel I used a soddering iron that gets really hot at the tip and allows you to burn holes in plastic...but be very careful when doing so...I've had the unfortunate event of it slipping off the plastic and literally burning my poor little fingers...so make sure you got a good grip. :)

    I have a cattleya That had a black mark on the leaf, it looked like a drip mark, So I thought something spilt on to the plant, The plant was already sick when I got it so I didn't think it was anything to worry about Now just over a week later, it looked bigger, then I started to put the plant under lights, and the next day the leaf was covered, in the black, So I cut the leaf off as near the stem as possible, now I'm hoping that after treatment it won't spread to the bulbs, it's in solitary confinement in a bottle so I can keep a close eye on it,

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад

      Yes these awful infections can spread rapidly...the one orchid exchange that I showed in another video was a prime example of that...when I realized what was taking place it was too late for that little guy...it had already infiltrated all areas of the plant... :( I am hoping that your cattleya recovers well...close monitoring and a spritz of disinfectant from time to time is key...also make sure to take it out once and a while for some fresh air...I'm finding that sometimes helps as well in their recover...good luck and I am sending warm recovery wishes your way! :)

  • @Ellofez

    My Cattleya I bought twice and both of them got black spots with a light brown ring around the spots and black spots around my foliage and my rhizome are turning brown what do you think it's my fault or already sick before I got both of the Cattleya same variety from the same nursery? I think it's not my fault but sometimes I do . Help !

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  8 лет назад

      +Ellofez I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR! When I go orchid hunting now...I pay close attention to any type of spottings, browning or blackening...and stay away from any with signs that something may be wrong with it. The only way you can really find out certainly what an orchid has is by having testing kits or sending out samples of your plants to have them tested by certain companies...so it is really hard to say what the plant has....and yes I would venture out and say that I think that you got them in that condition from that nursery...so it is very important if you decide to get anything from that nursery again you be very cautious. I would definitely keep them away from my other orchids...and take them out of their medium to inspect the roots...I would then treat the entire plant with some type of solution by spraying it down (continue to treat once a week).. I would keep the catts out of media and water them down by spraying them daily...it is very important that they are allowed dry time and that their roots not be exposed to too much watering or moisture. Also remember any time you handle the infected orchids...make sure you clean up after yourself (sanitizing everything you use) and wash your hands thoroughly. I am wishing the best for you and keeping my fingers crossed...GOOD LUCK!

    I like the idea of cinnamon +aloe, doesn't seem like it could hurt it. Keep us posted. Do you think these could have been from bad media? I've had that happen.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад

      Thank you for watching and just to let you know the cinnamon and aloe worked out very well...it dried a whole lot quicker than I thought it would...in a couple of minutes it was dry...and it looks good so far...it appears to have sealed the wound well and has stopped the rotting and discoloration from spreading. This is a great idea for those that have aloe plants and would like to use it for yet another purpose...indeed a miracle plant and I love it!!! :) PS they also sell aloe gel at the store as well.

    • @PictureMaria1
      @PictureMaria1  9 лет назад +1

      ...oh and no I don't really think that it was the media...I had repotted many of my orchids with the same batch and they haven't shown any signs of infection...also one plant acquired the infection before the new repotting and once I cleaned it up and planted it in the same batch it seemed to have recovered well with no more rotting. I just believe it is because of all the wet weather. :(

    Hello Maria, Using Listerine as you do and, making that very imaginative paste cure, would it not be a wonderful opportunity to have tried it out on those infected orchid pieces that you cut away. All your watchers I am sure would like to have had your feed back as to how effective or not effective that remedy is. Maria, if it works great if part works great if it has no effect at all OK, but as you say "you are no ordinary orchid grower"you take risks, in this case, there is no risk, only opportunity the plants were to be destroyed in any event so consider the idea of applying your trial and error cure.
