I never really understood this mindset that “point guards need to shoot 3s.” I guess everything changed with the emergence of Steph Curry, and most modern NBA fans feel that way, but historically you didn’t depend on your point guard to shoot the outside shot, that role belonged to your shooting guard and your wings. I get it the game has changed, but as a lifelong hoops fan who grew up in Jordan era, Ben’s play is a refreshing thing to see. Honestly in the long run I think the three-point line has hurt the game. It was fine in the 1980s and 1990s but 3P attempts now account for about 40% of shots in a game. I’ll never forget something that Bill Russell once said when he was commentating and both teams were taking mostly outside shots to start the game: “I don’t think they intend to have a game tonight. Just a little shootout.” That’s really what we have in the NBA these days, more shoots-arounds and less basketball.
