Yes…inspired to clean and organize my art table. I have a supply sharing event coming up with the Urban Sketchers chapter so I have a bag of no-longer-needed supplies to give away!
This was just what I needed today. This week I am going to unpack my art supplies after a recent move. I appreciated what you said about why you were going to keep the little car, yoga zebra, and the leaves. It reminded me of the little things I will get to see again and it helps. This will be my first real studio (I am 68) and I have studio space at my new residence after a long and challenging season of life. It is a pretty emotional moment for me. I can't wait to dig into those boxes and set up this new creative space and want to replay this video while I unpack to help keep me on track. 😅 Thanks again.
I love seeing creative spaces and how art supplies can be organized. I really like the labels and clear containers- I have pretty wood storage but I have a problem where if I can't see the supplies, they don't exist to me. Thanks for the tour!
Yes I have to put all my art supplies together. I have them all over the place. I moved from a temporary apartment while the house was being renovated. I’m going back to the college on the 23rd of January. I have to open my boxes to see what supplies I have.
Every artist needs a studio, because even if you clean it up there is so much stuff you need if you use more than one medium. Alas, I don't have a studio and instead I got rid of my dining room set and am now using the dining area as my studio because the light works the best for me there. So while the rest of the house is tidy, this is the one area that always looks messy, especially when I'm working on a project. It seems to be an endless struggle to keep it reasonably tidy, but I do try to glean and reorganize at least twice a year, mainly because I tend to forget which art supplies I already own and so end up with many duplicates. Just the various papers one needs for the various media is astounding, and I'm reluctant to settle in with only one medium (which would reduce the clutter) because life changes and your particular medium might change. Just because I LOVE colored pencils today might not mean I always want to use those to get the results I want. The more media you experiment with the messier it all seems to get, and I've come to the conclusion that creativity is just messy Since it still has to be kept within reasonable limits the periodic clean-up is absolutely necessary. Congratulations on a good job! The two pooches are works of art also.
I've been appreciating my supplies more than i ever did ! i've been working through a sketchbook that was cheap ( royal talens art creation) and have been really enjoying it.. it's really having great effect on my daily sketching.. i feel even less " preciousness" about trying new techniques and supplies , and feeling a bit more playful with it all.. as always, I am beyond grateful for your channel, Danny ..I started a daily sketchbook habit 7 years ago because of your breakfast video , and I haven't stopped since !!! I've sent countless other artists to that video , and take such pleasure in doing so.. wishing you and JJ and pups all the best in this coming year .. Norakag , here .. Be well
Only this morning I was looking through my art drawers at the boxes and tins of various pens, pencils and drawing utensils thinking, ‘What on earth am I doing with all this stuff’?😂😂 I reckon two thirds of art stuff that is bought is never used! I feel a lot better after seeing this video though 😂😂👍🇬🇧
This was just great to have a tour of your place and stuff and very inspiring! I also recently scoured through my art store. Is my son’s room but since he’s moved out I’ve tried to make it my art studio but I find I prefer working at my main desk that has three windows in a different room. So his room has ended up to be my art supplies storage area which I can go shopping in. Anyway point of the story is I pulled out items that I am not using enough to give three big bags of art supplies to three art friends and another bag of stuff to the community center for kids. Lightening up and making more space feels great! And discovered some things of course that I forgot that I had
I thought I was the only one who had so much stuff! It took me three days to organize and get rid of things (well, some things). I do make a mess when I'm creating, but I have to organize the chaos before I start a new piece of art. It's funny how the creative mind works.
I’m organizing my room too. I bought metal tool boxes to get rid of a bunch of plastic bins (some are broken). Using gift boxes from paint palettes to organize my brushes in one drawer of the bin tool boxes. Been going through stuff. Giving away or selling things I no longer use.
After I finish an art project my craft room looks like Armageddon. I can’t start something new until I’ve put everything back so I can start fresh. Art supplies seem to grow & spread & multiply unchecked while being used!
Organizing and decluttering is the current action mode I’m in. I like applying a critical eye to the stuff I’ve accumulated for various reasons! It’s supportive to see how others do it.
PEN CREEP!! It’s the dreaded virus of pens getting-out-of-hand!!! Annual cleaning is so helpful and this year I’ve taken it to a new level by actually MOVING from one place to another (Apache Junction to Florence Gardens) forcing me to be more organized and deliberate about what goes and what gets tossed to shared with someone else. Thanks for doing this!!
I LOVE this video! When you told us you’d be decluttering after the crush of completing the new course, I hoped you’d let us watch/join in! I’m inspired! Thank you!
Yeah I feel called out 😅 my room is still a mess since our move. We downsized so its hard to deal with being in a smaller space. Plus I still have a storage unit to clean out...yeah I got issues lol
4:22 how about a pugs eye view of the world? That would be funny to film (or draw from their “pictures”). Maybe it’s too clunky or heavy for them.. not sure but I thought I’d suggest it
You did inspire me to do the same. Thank you for sharing this! Seems like every video I see on YT shows perfectly clean, organized and uncluttered spaces, and it made me feel like I am the only one who struggles to keep things tidy. Seeing how you deal with similar problems makes me feel more normal. Watching how you organize and weed out the excess gave me ideas how to tackle my own home office/arts & crafts room. (What is the deal with all those USB cords anyway?! I miss the days when electronics came with power cords attached. When you got rid of something the cord went with it.)
Very inspiring, I have years of accumulated supplies to go through in my Art Attic Room. In the UK, Rymans Stationery Shop has a collection box for old, used up pens, presumably for recycling. 🙂
It’s so strange that so many artists are doing this NOW. I threw out 9 jam jars and found a better way of storing things. It felt so good afterwards. I’ve become reacquainted with my materials……. which are now easily accessible.
Thanks for sharing Danny 👍🏼 Yep I'm doing this every couple of weeks. But also moving the location of things Sometimes I despair of it sometimes it's inspiring. Always exhausting in some way or other.
You might be better of throwing the old cables out and ordering new ones. Get the fastest cables you can find. Charging won't take as long. They come in a variety of lengths, so figure out what would be the most useful in your office.
OMG the Agfa loup, examined any good negatives recently!? I also have a magnifier on a neck cord, as devices & packaging get insanely small, glasses aren't enough... Part of EDC core: glasses (magnifier), watch, wallet, phone, keys.
I have been in the weeds with this same process. I feel less alone lol! I spent almost an entire day organizing my cords and use the same method with the ziplock bags and labels etc. And yes it is totally annoying and I had the same thought re Amazon but still can’t throw them out. Argh! Hey maybe you could start vlogging! I’d be into that.
I, too, waded through my art supply stash this past weekend. A lot of it was removed from within table reach to a closet in another room. I wish I had the courage to just dump it all in the trash can, but then what would that say about me - an Impulsive Hoarder?
Don't worry about there even being a message. I go through my pens and markers and throw away any that aren't working right or are dried out. Take things out by going through the items and trash them. Now if there are things you won't use but are good, give them to friends or family that will use them, or depending on the quality, give them to a local skool or senior center or a women's shelter. The art supplies get love and you get back some closet space 😃
a piece of advice.. you should throw away the things that bother you, maybe keep 1 extra duplicate cable just in case it breaks, to have a more peaceful mind and have to organize less, take a look at minimalism I think it might interest you, btw thanks for sharing😊
There is no way most artists can be minimalists---at least not in that part of their lives. Every medium requires specialized equipment and special paper, and when technology is added such as Danny has to deal with, minimalizing is a pipe dream----at least I think so.
@r.mucklin1703 I think you don't know true minimalism, it's not about taking away everything or things that he uses, but what he doesn't need or doesn't bring value / use in his life (in fact I was talking about cables not pens, acrylics, brushes etc.) I'm an artist too.🧘♀️
@@marilynbarbie On the contrary, I've lived most of my life as a minimalist, deliberately and by choice. But when you have an artist's studio and you use various media (plus all the electronic equipment Danny uses) it means there will always be clutter. One can, of course, try to only keep what one uses, but that can become difficult when technology (and even art supplies with new ones coming out all the time) changing all the time. As a truly creative person you never know what you will be using tomorrow that seems useless today, or what new medium you might want to try out soon. If you use ONLY colored pencil you can possibly keep it under control, but the more media a person uses, the more accumulation there is in pens, acrylics, brushes, etc. That's why artists need studios where a mess is allowable because it's hard to live with it in just a dining area the way I do.
"Preserve the sanctity of the working surface" 😂❤ Going to put this over my work space.

Your dogs are adorable. Your room is nice and spacious. Thanks for sharing your clean up.
Contained clutter is the key. If it's in any kind of a container, it's not a mess😮
I love seeing creative spaces and how art supplies can be organized. I really like the labels and clear containers- I have pretty wood storage but I have a problem where if I can't see the supplies, they don't exist to me. Thanks for the tour!

I organised my art supplies last week. When I saw you I was so glad I got less 😂😂
You inspired me. I've been doing little cleanups lately but I need a big cleanup
I have that same Zebra! It came from Zebra pens at a trade show. I have it holding a little sign on my desk.
Nice place you got there. I'm having to pack up my craft room because we are getting new flooring . I'm finding stuff I never used from years ago.

Great way to start the new year! 👍
Would love to know more about the art you have displayed in your studio. I saw an orange face that looked interesting.
My painting of Marty Feldman!
@SketchBookSkool cool 😎
Must be January also cleaning my studio
I have piles of unused sketchbooks of various brands and formats and paper qualities. I don't know how to choose which to keep and which to let go.
Same here. Paper quality for various media is always an issue, and so one ends up with a lot of it, sketchbooks and otherwise.
That's a tough one! Perhaps you could try focusing on what types of paper you enjoy using the most.

I would draw the cute camera and complicated microphone thing before I recycled it at Best Buy or the city solid waste department.
Perhaps I will keep it in case it comes in handy.
I feel less alone now in my chaos 😂😂😂
Oh to have a room for just art stuff....lol.

I have bag of unused/excess art supplies ready to be donated to a nonprofit in Detroit.
