  • The leader of Turks & Caicos has responded to the five Americans facing twelve years in prison saying the minimum sentence can be "overruled in exceptional circumstances." The Americans are being charged for brining ammunition into the country.

    I am an American ex-mil with lots of guns and ammo. I travel a lot. The real problem is Americans are so ignorant of how other countries work. Plain and simple.

      That's OK if they are ignorant, it's their choice. What they need to know is that there are consequences for everything we do. Blaming breaking a law because of ignorance should never work for anybody, American or not. When a cop in US pulls you over for something you did, telling them you didn't know something or you didn't notice a sign is not a valid excuse.

      Please have your seen the border? Americans aren't the only one being ignorant right now to other countries' laws. At least we know other countries ' justice systems don't take sob stories as excuse unlike the pathetic courts we have towards foreigners who break our laws

    I have an idea. Don't take contraband to foreign countries. Remember the party of "personal responsibility"? I have traveled dozens of times internationally and never had any problems remotely like this. Why? Because I am adult who doesn't blame entire other countries when I do something they do not approve of.

      This lady took responsibility and said it was a innocent mistake.
      It was 4 white men too, who they arrested too,along with her who said they are sorry.
      The lady said it was a innocent mistake and don't know how the bullet got in her luggage.
      I was a FA, and I had a fingernail file in my bag a whole year, before security and I found out it was there.
      Which means all the airports I had checked into, nobody notice or saw the finger nail file
      It was x ray every time i flew,
      It was stuck all the way at the bottom of my luggage.
      Some of yall in the comment section arr perfect, you never forgot something or made a mistake in your life.
      Stuff happens in life and No One is perfect

    Under no circumstances is it understandable to accidentally bring contraband into a foreign country - regardless of what it is. Every single thing in your possession is something you are accountable for, and you alone. If you choose to go overseas, you are required to comply with the laws in that place. If you are someone who is prone to leaving things accidentally in places, buy new bags before you go.

    Everybody is law and order until your charged with a crime. Could someone from Turks and Caicos come to the U.S. and just walkway with no charges and would these same politicians extend the same courtesy?

      Yes actually. Have you noticed the criminals POURING OVER THE BORDERS. ILLEGALS TEENS WHO PUNCHED AND ATTACK NYPD WERE ABOUT TO WALK AWAY AND RECEIVE NO PUNISHMENT HAD THERE NOT BEEN AN UPROAR FROM AMERICAN CITIZENS.

      Good point. Absolutely not, guaranteed. As they shouldn't. Anyone who comes to US and breaks a federal or a state law should pay the price, regardless of what country they come from. The law is the law.

      @@cornells.1727 That's not what U.S. politicians are asking for they are asking for different rules for different people. When this law was being passed there were NO complaints from the U.S. No one asked for a travel advisory when the law was passed.

      People from other countries are breaking US laws every day on the border. T&C didn't pass this law for this reason. Wait and see the crying when their tourist industry tanks. It will be epic.

    People should know better, I thought all luggage was searched prior to even getting on a plane to ensure the safety of passengers. We do not live in the wild west and given the amount of gun violence in our country I can understand perfectly if another country has strict gun laws. Show respect when you travel and problems like this will never happen. This is a beautiful and popular vacation spot that encourages tourism, they want to protect their tourists.

    When travelers go to America and break their laws they are arrested, regardless if they they it in ignorance or not. So why when Americans travel and break laws in other countries they should not be dealt with, because they are Americans? Hypocrisy!!

    If you have ammunition laying around randomly that you're not even aware of it, then what does that say about you/ your families concern regarding responsible gun ownership and safety? I assume your weapon is somewhere unlocked and freely accessible too?

    At the end of the day you are responsible to know the laws of the places you travel to. It is absolutely silly they are facing prison but that is not Blinken s responsibility it is the people who entered a foreign country with prohibited items in their luggage.

    Spend the extra $40 and buy new luggage. Ive owned firearms since childhood, pop and military taught me to account for every round. Anyone with unsecured ammo ANYWHERE should have gun priviledges revoked for at least one year. That is really irresponsible..

      You must be joking. Having unsecured ammunition is irresponsible? How so it's not illegal to have loose ammunition anywhere in the United States, and it's harmless. There's nothing that you can do with loose ammunition to hurt anyone without a gun. Your point is ridiculous

When you travel to any place outside US it is YOUR responsibility to know or to check the basics of the laws of that country. There are law differences even among US states sometimes, what's legal in Texas may not be legal necessarily in another state. It's on YOU to know this. If you're an ignorant, it's fine and it's your choice, but be ready to pay the price for being stupid.

It is not some new or hidden law, it is CLEARLY posted BEFORE the #GunToting #Traveller even sets foot on the outward bound plane: NO FIREARMS ALLOWED, YOU WILL BE PROSECUTED. 🤨 Only #SelfCentred, #Egotistical US citizens deserve to have this law bound to them, because THEY are the ones who flout the laws of other countries and expect that they, are somehow exempt from the rules. 🤨

    Why are the congress members putting pressure on any country at all instead of letting the violators take their punishment? How dare they? These are all adults so they are 100% responsible for their decisions. In US there are many places where you can't bring a gun, too. If you do and get caught, guess what? Maybe it was just a mistake, but even mistakes have consequences. The idea to force a country to break its own laws just because the violators have a nationality or another is beyond outrageous! Especially coming from people who should know the importance of laws and a justice system!

    Thank you. I can't believe how harsh and judgemental so many of these comments are. Likeyou said, they are "so perfect" and Never made a mistake? Right. And they have nothing better to do than sit here on RUclips going after others. Makes me sick.
    Seems like some of those types here think the people should have never been released from jail and given a life sentence. Maybe one day something similar will happen to them as "karma speaks."

    responsible gun ownership, and our rights to possess them, requires a higher standard of conduct. Even just ammo. Guns and their ammo should have their own carrying case/pack. It’s more convenient when shooting days arrive besides avoiding these types of incidents. I am all for mandatory gun safety classes before anyone buys a weapon and having to update these every 2-3 years..I’m not saying we should register weapons…just have a social agreement that as gun owners we are held to a standard of care. I carry concealed where allowed in U.S. when on road trips and always know where all my ammo is….every bullet…because of self training in this regard…not because I’m perfect.

    What the government of Turks and caicos should do is stop the gang violence in there country. They also need to give justice for visitors who get robbed and mugged in Turks and Caicos all the time. Blinken doing too much in the war in europe, but no harsh help for our US citizens.

If you’s all of sudden being strict against visitors and not the gangs of Turks and Caicos and at time working with them, that is called hypocracy. Why not just give them a fine at the airport? Why drag this on for weeks and months?……….it’s called other motives and playing politics. Turkey and coocoos playing policts with United States is a bad idea considering they are millions times stronger than them.

      @@honeztearthling987 so a visitor from another country doesn't have to adhere to the laws of the US? You need to know the important laws of the country that you're visiting. We can't compare the laws of another country to those of the US. It's not dragging anything out. It's called being held accountable for your actions in another country. If a person is unable to adhere to the laws of a particular country, then stay in America. And it's irresponsible to have loose ammunition in the luggage anyway.
