Have you ever thought of getting an airbag vest?
Nope, but now I do ! We'll be visiting a Dutch motor'show' in a couple of weeks, curious if we'll see any airbag vests etc.
The Alpine Star might have the advantage with the shoulder and collarbone protection . Collarbones hurt a lot and mine is still not the same. And yes.
Long Way Home - looked at them but the $600 plus price is not reasonable

Yes, I will be buying an airbag race suit and jacket from RST. Much cheaper than the top brands and of similar quality.
I am a trauma doctor. I always wore a neck brace but now Helite air vest. We all try to wear helmets, gloves, boots, Pants, boots, and jackets but forget about the neck. The Helite you never have to worry about the charge or electronics. It is multiuse. Airbags were mandated in cars which significantly reduced chest trauma as the number one killer. In 2012 stability control was mandated in cars. It is showing up in European bike especially since Euro 5 requires TC. Air bags are worth the investment as well as disability insurance. Vests are reasonably priced. Vests are just as important as a helmet.
Agreed, anything that can be done to improve safety and bring down the fatality and disability stats is a really good thing.
Our group swears by the Hit-Air vests. Good value. Best neck support out there when inflated. Easy cartridge reset (no factory return needed). Yes, it's a tether system. But I would hate to trust my life to remembering to recharge the batteries. Not a big deal if my music quits because of a flat battery. But if the vest's battery runs down, you probably won't notice... until you need it. However, the most important thing: rather than debate about which vest... we are just delighted when a rider wears an air vest... any air vest.

In France a lot of bike insurance policies either cover airbag recharge or have a cheap option to have that coverage, which is a really good thing. On my insurance the option for airbag recharge, jacket and helmet replacement in case of accident is about 25 euros a year. I think that's becoming more and more common across Europe.

It would have been good to add the Helite Turtle 2 as a mechanical trigger system option. No batteries to recharge and have to be mindful of. Plus the simplicity of the manual trigger is appealing to those who do not want to rely on the gyro technology and other electronic components possibly failing.
I think the Helite is the best option. No need to send it to the manufacturer every year for service.

Problem with both Dainese and alpinestars is the fact that after an inflation, you have to send them back to get recharged. The new klim and Ixon use a canister you can replace yourself.
That Klim vest, after you pay the $400 for the vest, you have to pay another $400 to register it AND then you have to pay yearly on it lol.

I have the Dainese D|air and worth every penny for the protection it provides. No other jacket gives me the feeling of protection that this does. Good enough for Rossi.. more than good enough for me.

What about the Helite? I think it makes more sense a vest for outside your jacket. That way you can still wear a heated vest. And keep using your current snug jackets.

But you should talk about that dainese and tech air can not be used on the track.
But the in and motion system like ixon held fyrugan can be used on track and street if you pay extra for the algoritm for track.
So in in and motion you get two airbags one for street and one for track.
But as in the tech air 5 you need tech air race also and gear that fits tech air race.
Also add RST who, like several other gear companies, chose the In&Motion system. It seems the most affordable option for me. However, with RST you must buy one of several garments: race suit or several jackets (leather and textile options). I believe their most affordable option is a jacket for £400. Pretty good for a jacket and an airbag which is less than some companies charge for a standard jacket. The catch is you lease the brains of the jacket for £12 per month or can buy it outright for £300. I believe the canisters are good enough for 3 activations before needing service.
It’s still a lot for me because I mainly ride with a passenger so we’d need 2 systems.
The in&motion vests need a new canister after everytime it goes off. The 3 times you refer to is: you should send the vest for inspection after the 3rd inflation. However, you get a testing tool with every canister so why bother sending in
Recently purchased the Dair from Dainese. After a little time trying to register the jacket using the desktop app it has been comfortable and v. easy to use (arm & disarm). I would recommend the Dair (but read the registration instructions carefully).
Oh and I got 10% off by asking nicely so it worked out at £500.

Great vid & information.....I think it is worth it. It just needs a pocket for my concealed carry and it would be perfect...crash safety and safety against crime....and bigfoot.
Unfortunately, I know of someone who experienced a lanyard D ring failure during an off, the jacket never deployed, proving the rider, no protection! I think the evolution of this technology for bikes still has a way to go and I would be concerned about needing to keep a battery charged, batteries always go flat on me.. Having said this, every little helps!.
I am definitely interested in an airbag vest. The Alpenstar looks good but in addition to the cost of the vest, I’d have to pony up more money to replace my mid weight and summer jackets to get the extra room
You can get a Helite for outside your jacket.

For the Collarbone the Tech Air 5 is the best as well as for the shoulders

Yea Helite! I wish he'd talk about them. I'm considering the Helite T2 vest Hi-Viz model. It seems to cover you from the neck down to the hips/pelvis area.

It’s in excellent condition , hardly worn.
I still have it, I would have stayed with it instead of going for the Tech-5, but I got it in medium and the fit is tight.
I got the tech-5 in a large and it’s perfect.
But the Helite is analog and frankly fool proof, it’s a perfect system, and it does appear to offer a bit more coverage than the Tech-5.

I purchased the Alpinestars Tech Air 5 vest back in August. I was trying it on under all my jackets to make sure it would work and be comfortable (it was fairly hot). While I was doing this, I was also reading the manual. I got to the bottom half of page 9 (IIRC), where I noticed a section about what NOT to do with your vest. Among other things, right at the bottom of the page in bold red type was a warning to NOT use the vest above 2000 meters as the low air pressure can damage the internal battery... Well, I spend a lot of time riding above 2000 meters (6500 ft). I returned it the next day. I don't know if they've addressed this since then...
I decided to buy the Hit Air vest instead. Very similar to the Helite, but more reasonably priced. The tether doesn't care about the altitude...

I can't find this information in the manual. From what year is yours? I have one on the internet from 2016.
@@grossibp I purchased mine from Revzilla last August I believe. (2020) It is not the same thing as the 2016 model. If I understand correctly, it was proprietary, and needed an Alpinestars jacket to zip into back then. These new Tech Air 5s are stand-alone, so you can use them inside any jacket. Just don't go riding in the Rockies or Sierras. I truly hope they address this issue because aside from the altitude thing, this is a great product.

The problem with altitude is not the trigger system (tether vs electronic), it's how it affects the gas used for inflation.
Helite Turtle - less money - tethered but user-reuseable with only a new canister.

Has your friend ever heard of Huanqiu? It's hard to find info here, they are like $100 on wish and it's hard to put my trust in such an 'affordable' product.

No debate. I want it. Three issues; 1) I do lots of adventure travel so replacing a canister is I have an incident overseas in a 3rd world place (seems like the Turtle is the only solution to have the user replace) - what value is it to have to send your vest into the manufacturer each time and wait until they are ready to ship back? Thats nuts and now well thought out, 2) Off-road -- none of these work on off-road which sucks... Crashes happen there too -- maybe more often and 3), Heat issues -- when it gets 90 degrees, having another layer sucks, but worth it I suppose. Cost is the very, very, very last issue -- safety is 1st.
I think getting a tethered one, much more reliable and no need for batteries, for about 400€. There are some at 150-190€ (XGP) but price difference is too big and i cannot see any tests so doesn't feel like it's worth taking the risk not putting double the money.
Also i'm pretty sure an airbag can last 5-10 years or like 2-3 crashes so it's soooo worth it !

I know I’m writing 4 years after this video was released, but in case anyone else finds this video, I just want to make something clear to prospective buyers.
I own an airbag jacket. It’s an RST Paragon 6 Pro Series. It comes equipped with the French In&Motion Airbag system. This is the system that Ixon (in this video) use, along with several manufacturers like Held, Klim and Furygan. The €400/£372 extra is for a subscription paid monthly, which allows the product to be continuously updated with all users riding data (crash data). Yes, it’s a pain, but you can pay monthly and lease the “brain” for £12.99 a month in the UK. If you’re a fair-weather biker, you can suspend your subscription, which is what I do with my wife’s jacket. She doesn’t come out in winter, but I commute a total of 400 miles per week across 3 days in all weathers (except snow). Thus, £12.99 a month, is a tiny price to pay against my life/physical mobility.
This brings me onto the main point. Be careful of which jacket you buy, if going for the In&Motion. DO NOT under any circumstances buy an RST jacket. It’s the exact reason why British industry collapsed in the 1980s (along with a shove from Margaret Thatcher). It has to be the shittiest brand ever. My Paragon 6, leaks at the sleeves, the chest and when it’s not raining makes me sweat like a pig. The membrane is basically a plastic bag, with 10000mm/24hr against Gore-Tex 28,000mm/24hr. Not only that, the retarded RST designers decided not to have an opening cuff on an all season jacket. Try getting a pair of winter gloves under it…..it can be done, but here’s the rub. They used the shittiest “hook and loop” (Velcro) known to man. After around 1,000 miles of use, it doesn’t stay shut.
The zips jam, unless you wrestle with bending the fabric out of the way, then you have to reseat the fabric to exclude drafts. The collar tab velcro is the same shitty stuff, and so doesn’t close. Oh and the pockets leak water too. Unfortunately, my kids bought it for me for my 60th birthday. It was around £500. I’m now using my 20 year old BMW Goretex kit. It has never leaked after 40,000 miles (before I started using it again). I’m now buying the In&Motion vest to go under the jacket. The RST is going in the bin.
As with everything, you get what you pay for. Motorcycling on the cheap is ok, but the reality is, your life is worth more than a few thousand pounds. Buy good kit, ride safely, and don’t waste your money on British junk. (I’m British, by the way!)

The vest itself is £379.99 and the 'brain' is $399.99 euro OR $12 euro per month as a subscription.

what would you rather get the mechanical or automatic? - in my opinion mechanical is less maintenance after it deploys vs automatic needs to be sent back to the manufacturer.

It isn't mechanical or electronic that makes you send it back. It's a company decision (do we want to be greedy or not)
Helite has an e-vest that you can recharge yourself just like their mechanical ones. And that costs less than 10% of what Alpine charges for a recharge, and that's excluding your other costs with sending it back.
So pay a lot and wait for days, or pay a little and fix it yourself in 2min. Not even a choice worth contemplating.

Helite for example lets you do it yourself for a few bucks.
Alpine for example wants to do it themselves and bill you hundreds of dollars.
It's all about the company. Not the type of vest.

I have recently purchased a Techair jacket, the airbag insert does not fit in any other jacket, to needs to be paired with a Techair ready jacket.
I have been thinking about this purchase for around 18 months and have been put off by the price, but after my partner watched the footage of a head-on smash where a car crossed the centerline and the rider put his survival down to the airbag jacket, I was told to go out and buy one. You can't put a value on your life.
I'm thinking to buy it as well.They said that can be worn under any proper fitting textile jacket1 or Tech-Air compatible jacket.Are they lie then?

They show the airbag zipping into the jacket, the wires connecting the airbag to the jacket and the Velcro connection in the jacket that acts as the on / off switch for the airbag.
I think that the Alpinestar airbag can therefore only be used with a Alpinestar Techair jacket. Maybe other brands can work with any motorcycle jacket.

There are 3 Tech-Air vests from Alpinestars. Tech-Air Race. Tech-Air Street. And Tech-Air 5. The 5 is the stand alone vest that can go into any jacket. The other 2 are to be matched with specific jackets made by Alpinestars.

I just bought the Alpine stars tech air five for $1000 Australian, and the way i see it if it stop me from becoming a vegetable in an accident then its money well spent, my opinion its worth every dollor! Let me ask everyone this question, how much is you're life worth??? Can you put a price on you're life???? My answer is definitely not!

why not just go helite? so far one of the most inexpensive. its a mechanical connection not electronic which makes it simpler and thus more reliable. also doesnt rely on batteries. and can easily and cheaply be refilled in case of an accident. and so far it has some of the most coverage ive seen from these airbag systems. how come they didnt get a mention?
The electronic airbags sense the impact with crazy magic and can trigger the vest earlier than the mechanical ones, I think 40ms for a good electronic one vs 100ms for tethered. Doesn't matter if you get thrown far, but if you go over the bars and hit the car you just t-boned, or get rear-ended hard, I like the faster one. Not that I've actually seen any data on whether it makes a difference. I've been wearing the Ixon for three years or so, and it saved my bacon in two crashes -- no internal injuries, no broken ribs. I used a Hit-Air for years and then a Turtle before the Ixon. Not sure why there's not more love from Hit-Air -- as someone above mentioned, it immobilizes the neck better than the others, and broken neck prevention is one of the major intended benefits of airbag vests.
That crash test dummy did a good job of protecting his expensive airbag vest by absorbing most of that impact with his face/visor ... Clever dummy.

The ixon model offers a cheaper alternative than buying the brain outright. You rent it for €100 a year with lifetime warranty & also they change the brain of the unit every 3 years
Just to add to the to refill the ixon it’s a €80 cartridge you can do yourself
Why not simply wear your regular riding jacket, and then put on a backpack (fastened securely) and have an always inflated airbag in the backpack .. curious to know why this would not work. An always inflated airbag doesn't require any trigger to get inflated, so no electronics/battery/tether etc. Top it with the fact that some riders wear a backpack as a style item, so it should fly with most riders aesthetics as well

Not many motorcicle riders, very fiew car drivers are noticing them in traffic, lots of accidents...
You would be fine during the day, I wouldn’t recommend night riding.
I guess stick to your neck brace for off road and use the air bag system for on road.

Personally its a no-brainer for me.
I live in one of the warmest country of the world, Italy, usually 6-7 months with no rain and 35-40° Celsius 2-3 months per year with 70% of humidity so wearing stuff is a torture so I’m looking for the most breathable one

I had a crash at 80km/h with Helite leather jacket last year. The jacket performed excellent. My right elbow was kind a bad but the jacket inflated and got me all stiff. I bought 100g co2 canister after and reloaded it-that's it. The advantage of this solution is a mechanical trigger so its impossible to trigger it when riding and it will not run out of battery. You need to clip it every time though just like seatbelts in the car. Hope it helps someone choosing right gear.
How is the durability on your Helite leather jacket? Any loose seams after the accident or something like that?
@@benghazi4216 Had to saw about an inch of thermal liner inside. Seam around the shoulder broke from the impact. The jacket itself is just great. For scratches I used some black shoe polish and you wouldn't say it's there, just very good quality leather. The only thing I would add to it is D3O elbow pad.

Sadly... 700 usd is not affordable in most of the world.
No airbag "decides" you're gonna have a crash!! All airbags sensed you "had" a crash and then it deploys!
Uh-huh, we said the same about the "Safety-Lid" too, right up to the moment insurance companies lobbied the gov't into making it illegal to ride without your own "can't see or hear, but sure like the false sense of cozy safe-ness" hat. Yay. More better safety-schmaftety...!
The danger of course will be states and countries MANDATING that riders MUST have these along with yearly certifications etc....could destroy one's ability to hop on their bike for a quick ride....not to mention the expense added which WOULD remove motorcycles as an option for certain sectors of the market....and dont think for an instant that INSURANCE companies will not be all over this pushing the old "if we can even save a single life..." mentality....like many things it is great with a big looming downside....And just wait until ALL children have to wear air vests in vehicles
