Excellent video! I usually hike in the spring and fall in Pennsylvania and am looking to expand into the winter also. I need to get some winter gear, and this gave me some great ideas. Thanks!
Spring and fall are the best. Winter can be fun too and has advantages. Pretty much no people and no snakes, win! Haha I don't backpack much in summer, but I do need to get out more in summertime.
Nice setup. Love the ear flap hat. I have the classic one with red/black wool and rabbit fur. Everyone picks on me for it, but I'm also never the one complaining about being cold. 😂 Rain/wind shell for winter I just started using the carhartt raid defender line. They're under $100 and so far waterproof. Probably not quite as lightweight as yours, but if anyone needs something on a budget, it works. I just picked up a 10° incubator from HG I've got to test out in the next week or two. Probably up in the Pine Creek gorge area or along the Mid-State trail. We're finally getting some winter weather, so I can justify it at least.
I really like your winter set up. As an experienced winter backpacker myself including into the -°F I agree with you in not using wool to hike in, wool being a good base layer is a myth, it holds water and dries slow, synthetic all the way. I highly recommend you try fishnet base layers for winter hiking and other outdoor activities. The fishnet base layers are extremely popular in Norway and have even been adopted by their military for almost a century, it's gaining popularity here too. The fishnets vent but also keep pockets of air close to your body for warmth but dry extremely fast by allowing the moisture to escape instead of staying close to your body. They're simply the best base layer for winter hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing etc. If you want decent Gor-tex at an affordable price I agree with you on some of the military surplus Gore-Tex. I love your winter gear set up. I am going out Monday if you want to come for an overnight on the BFT, will get down to 7°F. 10 mile portion Why didn't you model the underwear for us?!
I'll definitely have to check out the fishnet base layers. I have never heard of them before. I'm a fan of the synthetic base layers, they work great. Do you have any recommendations on where to look for decent not super expensive snow shoes? I don't know much about them and wouldn't use them much most likely but it would be nice to have some. If I know it's gonna be in the single digits I would definitely be doubling up my quilts lol
@@HikeIntoTheSunset Yessss, I am actually taking the Reactor liner from Sea To Summit, supposedly adds 20 degrees of warmth so I am going to use it inside my 15°F Katabatic quilt Monday night. For snow shoes I literally typed in Google for ultralight snowshoes and got an amazing pair for a reasonable price (Atlas helium -MTN), they're very light and strong. I shopped around for deals. Check out fishnet base layers at Wiggy's , just Google it and there are some people posting videos on RUclips about the fishnet base layers. We still need to do a trip together soon!
Hey, yes actually I found mine googling ultralight snowshoes and a bunch of deals popped up. I got my Atlas Helium Mountain 30" snowshoes for a decent price too, like 40% off. Yes I am thinking I am might be doubling my quilts too. I have a 15 degree Katabatic TQ that I think I am going to double up with my Sea To Summit Reactor to get me down to that temperature. I have a 0 degree UQ that I'll be taking. I might stack with my 40 or just rely on my UQ protector for added benefit. @@HikeIntoTheSunset
For your head at night I just got a down balaclava. I think it’s aegismax but they all seem the same. The thing is awesome. It’s loose and light, I like it more than wearing hats. I’ve used the nature hike down pants too, over my hiking pants, they worked great. It’s all AliExpress stuff but I like it.
I have used balaclava and they work great. I would usually put balaclava over my head with a buff around my neck and then pull my sweatshirt hood up too. Worked great.

As a beginner Winter Hiker and future Winter Backpacker, This is GREAT!
Winter hiking can be really fun, but it also presents it's own unique challenges. Glad you enjoyed the video.

I like having a net on my hammock in the winter because it's slightly warmer.
This was a very helpful video. My goal is to do some winter backpacking this winter so I’m hoping to use this info to help guide my trip.

I used a balaclava for along time but I love my fur trapper hat now haha. That incubator should work out great for you 👍👍
Good thought out kit!
Thank you
