@@MDFishTanks in terms of volume it is. A big 40lb(excuse my American units) bag of peat moss cost $10 at a hardware store. Dirt, well that's the cheapest thing around!
the only reason people dont do dirted tank is its not reusable and It's hard to do some good artistic hardscapes with it but for an natural looking tank dirted is the best method
How far into the dirt cap do you put the plants. Do you put the plants just into the cap so the roots grow down into the bottom substrate?, or do you go through the cap and plant the plants directly into the bottom layer substrate?
I used organic topsoil bag from Home Depot. Removed the big chunks from it, put only 1/2 inch to 1 inch of dirt on the bottom, then minimum of 2 inches of sand on top of it, lots and lots of plants and fish the same day. That’s it, no water changes except weekly water feeling and pr-filter cleaning on my Oase 600 (I have two) that’s it. Simple, easy and it works on my 120 gallon aquarium without any spending whatsoever.
I tried it twice and had the same problem as he did, even after reducing the amount of dirt. Had algae all over because of excess nutrients in water column. It would be fine if you had CO2 and high light. Went back to Aquasoil and tablets for the first few months and stopped the tablet once established.

Pond Compost is just overpriced peat and dirt.
it's like £3 a bag...I'm not sure you can class that as overpriced do you think?
@@MDFishTanks in terms of volume it is. A big 40lb(excuse my American units) bag of peat moss cost $10 at a hardware store. Dirt, well that's the cheapest thing around!
I didnt cap my soil. Water is alittle tinge of yellow. But plants r growing heaps even without co2 injection.
Love watching you and your tanks 😊 what sand do you buy please? Cheers MD 👍
the only reason people dont do dirted tank is its not reusable and It's hard to do some good artistic hardscapes with it but for an natural looking tank dirted is the best method
yo MD
this tank is beautiful i love the scaping style
just disappointed on only one thing ... plants melt and regow ... n nun of youtuber showing this reality
How far into the dirt cap do you put the plants. Do you put the plants just into the cap so the roots grow down into the bottom substrate?, or do you go through the cap and plant the plants directly into the bottom layer substrate?
Good job, beautiful underwater world!
Fish CAN be kept in bowls. Just for the love of god, stop putting goldfish in them.
thanks for the vid - where can I find those weights your using for your trimmings? Cheers!
A lot of things i learn from you MD!! Continue your aquascape journey. Excited for more tips from you in the future. 👍
Great experiment, that row does look great. 👍
Hopefully you are not using your personal toothbrush clean the skimmer 😉 hahaha 😂
Those plants which grow up and out of the water are termed 'emergent plants': not 'immersed'.
Wooow beautifull, salam i'am from indonesia 😊
At 17:45 ... the one that you say "not sure what that is" ... hehe
Could you explain the setup PLZ ? :)
I did dirtied tank 10 years ago and never went back.
What kind of soil did you use and for how long did you leave the fish tank sit before putting fish in it?
I used organic topsoil bag from Home Depot. Removed the big chunks from it, put only 1/2 inch to 1 inch of dirt on the bottom, then minimum of 2 inches of sand on top of it, lots and lots of plants and fish the same day. That’s it, no water changes except weekly water feeling and pr-filter cleaning on my Oase 600 (I have two) that’s it. Simple, easy and it works on my 120 gallon aquarium without any spending whatsoever.
Yeah..my dirted tank has not quite worked out like that after 1 month...kudos
This low tech tank looks better than what I’m trying to achieve with high tech…. Gotta go back to the basics 😅
Water changes? Filter? I'm hoping no.
Sir best tank mattes for red cherry shrimps , ? Because they r bredding pretty well
Your budget set up costs more than 2 30gal aquariums here 😂
Been running a dirted tank with dirt from my back garden for about 8 months and the thing is amazing. Everyone should use dirt in their tanks.
I tried it twice and had the same problem as he did, even after reducing the amount of dirt. Had algae all over because of excess nutrients in water column. It would be fine if you had CO2 and high light. Went back to Aquasoil and tablets for the first few months and stopped the tablet once established.
@@Pepe-dq2ib I've got some glass algae but nothing else. It's a great method when you get everything balanced
hey do uhave any tips on growing s repens i cant seem to grow them well..theyve always been stuntted..but all my other plants and mosses are doing well...
I find they need good nutrients in the roots and medium level of lighting. Take this tank as an example.
How do you get your plants to grow so well without co2? You have perfect water?😊
can you make a bala shark aquarium. you can mix them with other sharks?!
Where do you get/buy pond compost?
What's the benefit of keeping the light strip 3 foot above the water line? Why not pull it in tight?
So why don’t u use all the time then bc the results are insane plus the soil is way cheaper then the usual aqua soil
So its safe to use organic potting mix as long its capped with something
Dirted tank is not just so simple a tank with dirt. I hope so.
Anybody know a good soil I could get, they don’t ship the one he used to the US
Haha I do the tanks my wife takes care of the houseplants
Dont you need to shove in the cut out of the stem plants inside the soil to make them grow ?
This might be a very stupid question, but this will work for saltwater tanks, correct? Anyways, I'm addicted to your channel! Thanks for the awesome content!! LovePeace&Light.
No, it won't.
Great looking tank...! Although I would have made the sand layer at least twice as thick for a long term tank...
Does anyone know what light he used in this scape?
the ram tank has gone nuts and the sparkling gourami tank is looking deasent out of all you're scapes md uncle....more over all you're scapes are astonishing and beutifull
Can you tell me where you get your river rock from?
What do you think is the best dirted substrate for you?
what??? I would welcome green or brown algae, but I would never scrub it off. Shocked
Great job dude! What is the name of the led that u use in this tank ?
ADA is not going to like this video. Lol. I love it!!!!😄
MD I follow you already almost 5 years. I enjoy every time when I watch your videos on RUclips. Like always you are good with aquariums low tech and stuff. Respect bro. Greats from Holland bro
wishing MD does a all red plant tank...
I have the same lowtech aquarium and from the all plants HC Cuba is only dying even with liquid fertilizer...and 1g of CO2 weekly.
Superb looking tank bud. Inspired me to rescape one of mine with similar mixture plants. Do you still daily dose co2 booster and leaf zone? My reds don't seem to be as vibrant as yours. H'ra, Ludwigia super red and Alternanthera reineckii Rosanervig.
do you use any fertilizer for this tank ?
Hello! I was wondering if you could advise what sort of pump you’re using to empty your tank. If you could type down the Amazon link would be great!
Ps your tanks are just great! Thanks
