    Thanks Dustin. I just ordered the F017 and am looking forward to its arrival. The slightly longer than normal focal length for standard shooting is always something I've been drawn to...and to add macro capability is an absolute bonus.
    My kit contains Canon 6d, 30d and Rebel 5ti bodies with 14, 24 ts, 17-40, 24-105, 50 stm and 100-400. The 90 macro will really round out my creative choices.

      I'm going from the Canon L to this lens. It's on order and going to put my L up for sale soon. Just recently bought the 70-200 G2 - my first off brand lens - and it's turning into a gateway lens into other brands lol. Hoping to replace my 85 1.8 Canon with Tamron's version.

      @@rialbb A great review of Dustin. Let me tell you something. It's not the price always that tells you the good of the lens. Before I make my order I always use to look for reviews. Just compare Tamron and Sigma with Canon when you are looking for lenses.
      Tamron and Sigma lenses are quite good lenses with good qualities and more than $1000 cheaper. My next Macro lens will be the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro (F017) for Canon after my research and reviews. Hope my hints are helpful. Regards from Curacao Island.

    Very nice review. Tamron really stepped up their game in terms of build quality. Mine feels and looks fantastic. I found mine to be a little jerky on the focus ring though. It's very smooth to turn overall but when it comes to fine adjustments, the focus ring tends to jump slightly. I don't know if I bought a lemon but the slight jumping in focusing is noticable in filming at macro distance where the depth of field is so narrow.

    Great review,
    For your info Code F004 is an old version and F017 is a Newer version as you mention.
    Differences are that the Code F004 has a problem with Live View on some Canon Cameras and has no Image Stabilizer.
    The Newer version F017 has no problem with Live View and has builtin Image Stabilizer.
    I did appreciated your way and style to talk about this "State of the Art Macro Lens".
    Everybody is telling that it's one of The Best Macro Lens at the moment and Canon should take this in consideration.
    Hope to get mine very soon.

    I have the F004 and it is definitely a good lens. However not sure whether my copy of the lens or the design was flawed, I have dust went in into the lens from the front element after just 2 days of use. Since small aperture has to be used during macro photography, the resulting image was ruined. I sent the lens back for cleaning, but was forced to add a UV filter so no more dust will ever get into the lens.. Kind of annoying though.

    Wow, another excellent review from Dustin. Very informative especially for us who are looking to buy a macro lens (and will be my portrait prime also). For us shopping, the first question is how does it compare to the gold standard (Canon 100mm L) and you have answered that question. I would have liked to see more footage of the actual usage like how fast the AF is. I have the new 35mm and the speed on that is average. Having said that, I would compromise on speed to have better precision. To your credit you did mention that the 2nd Gen 90mm was already good and this new one even better. I don't think you mentioned if the AF was accurate but if you had no complaints on the previous one and this new one is better then I am assuming no problems there. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to the printed article.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    Hi Dustin,
    How does your Canon 100mm f2.8L perform against flare (any ghosting etc.?) compared to this lens?
    And do you think that metal construction of Tamron SP 90mm F017 lens is a bad choice because of the risk of thermal shock?
    One last question, is tripod mount ring on a lens is important or useful for macro photography?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад +1

      I've never missed a tripod mount on any macro lens, as they are typically reasonably sized. I don't think the metal construction is an issue at all. As for ghosting or flare - the Canon isn't exempt, but isn't bad, either.

    Does it have constant Aperture 2.8 at all focusing distances? Heard otherwise from other reviewers. If no, will this be an issue? Thanks in advance Dustin

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад

      That's a complicated subject that a lot of people are confused by. ALL macro lenses have a changed effective aperture at close focus distances (that's physics). For some reason, however, Nikon bodies actually show the closing down aperture on their bodies...but only for the Tamron lens. The physical aperture size doesn't change, however, and is still F2.8. The amount of light that can be gathered at macro focusing distances does change.

    Since I bought this lens everything about it was brilliant except one small part - when manual focusing, the ring is very smooth except when I want to do a very small adjustment, it kind of jumps a bit more than I need. Don't know whether that's only my copy of it but it can get a bit frustrating from time to time.

If the autofocus is quick, this macro could be the best combination of portability, diversity of use, and low light performance with great IOS more than compensating for the loss of a stop of light for handheld indoor shooting. But I don't have a good gauge of how much I am losing in autofocus speed relative to the 85mm f1.8

    I realize your interest is in this lens' use in still photography, but I'm wondering if you could comment on the dynamic behavior of the F017's VC compared to the F004? I noticed a bit of ratcheting in the framing of the shot where you tested for flare from direct sunlight, an effect I've seen in some optically stabilized lenses intended for still photography. I find the stabilization in the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC works well for handheld video, and would be interested in which of the two 90mm f2.8 VC versions you think would perform more smoothly for video shooting?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      The upside of this lens is that you can actually tweak the behavior of the lens' VC for video in the Tap In Console. If you choose the "Viewfinder Stability Priority" mode it is designed specifically for video work. I find the Tamron lenses in this mode work well for video.

    Mr Abbott, I enjoyed your review, but I'm confused.
    dxomark has your Canon macro listed at 3.3 t stops and the last generation tamron at 3.2 t stops.
    certainly the new lens isn't losing over 50% (half stop) more light that the model it is replacing.

      One big plus for the Tamron is the compatibility with the Tap In Console - it allows you to tweak a lot of the lens' behavior. The Tamron is a little bit sharper and has better weather sealing. First party lenses tend to have less glitches when you trade camera bodies, though. I honestly don't know which one I would buy if I didn't already own the Canon.

    Hey Dustin, if you had the option would you buy the canon or tamron if money was not an issue. The benefit I see of the canon is that the camera will do lens corrections if you shoot Jpeg. All of my other lenses are Canon L glass accept for a Sigma 120-300 2.8 Sport. Great review.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      If the lens corrections are a big deal to you, then stick with the Canon. I've owned one for five years and it is exceptional. The new Tamron has a better build and might be a bit sharper overall, but there are some limitations to third party, to be sure.

      Dustin Abbott Yes I have been interested in the 15-30mm but I have a 16-35mm F2.8l Mkii all ready and the weight and lack of filters will hold me back from seriously looking at it. Let me tell you I'm really amazed by this lens. I'll still keep the other lens for different purposes, but this Tamron lens is simply amazing for detailed product still shots. My current setup has allowed me to actually go from F16 (from my Micro NIKKOR 60mm lens WITH 5000K background lighting and using my speed lights) to F16 (from my Tamron SP 90mm lens WITHOUT any background lighting and just using my speed lights). Hi Justin - Can I ask a question please? I have just purchased this lens and am very happy with one reservation. When framing a shot - with AF & VC activated - if I release the shutter button (e.g. to reframe the shot) the image in my viewfinder shifts position slightly. This doesn't happen when VC is off so I assume the problem is related to the VC mechanism? Are you aware of this issue? Not sure if this is a malfunction but any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Allan.

      I have seen that behavior at times with certain lenses. It's very uncommon with lenses released in the last four years, but not uncommon before that. If it is a very obvious or damaging behavior, I would recommend having the lens serviced or replaced.

    The earlier version of this lens could not get within 50 feet of f2.8. When focused closer than that, the widest aperture it could reach was f3. Any info on whether the new Tap-In Console version shares this limitation?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      I used the previous version extensively and never saw what you are describing. I can show you very close focus shots that are still at f/2.8. ALL macro lenses have a much smaller effective aperture value at macro distances. Look in the manual of a Canon/Nikon macro lens and you will probably find a section that describes that even if your camera doesn't show it. The Tamron behaves just like other macro lenses - just the camera doesn't hide it.

    • @QuicksilverSG
      @QuicksilverSG 8 лет назад

      Perhaps the particular lens (F004) I tested was defefective? I tried it on D5200, D750, and D500 cameras, and in all three cases it stayed at f3 until just before the manual focus indicator reached infinity, and only then did it open up to f2.8. I measured the f2.8 focus threshold distance at about 50 feet. If you still have the F017 version from this review, could you test it for the closest f2.8 focus distance?

      I think you would be better served by putting this question to Tamron. I can't tell you more than I already have.

    • @QuicksilverSG
      @QuicksilverSG 8 лет назад

      Here's Tamron's reply to my inquiry. I asked if it was typical for the aperture of the F004 90mm f2.8 VC macro lens to open no wider than f3 when focused on objects closer than about 50 feet:
      This is only an issue with Nikon lenses/camers. This is not only true
      for our lenses in Nikon mount, but all of Nikon's macro lenses have the
      same behavior. The physical aperture size does not change in the lens,
      however because the lens’ focus group moves forward when focusing
      towards the 1:1 magnification ratio, the amount of light reaching the
      sensor is reduced a bit. Canon cameras maintain the aperture value
      correctly at f/2.8, but vary the shutter speed accordingly. From your
      brief description of the issue it appears your lens is performing
      normally.
      Sounds like when the lens is close-focused, the lens' effective T-stop decreases enough that the camera interprets it as a reduction in F-stop. Unfortunately, this occurs not just at macro focus distances, but as far as 50 feet from the camera.

      Thanks for the quick response. I'm really impressed. Actually, I want to make sure I can focus close when shooting portraits (not macro shots necessarily), and still be at f 2.8. I saw some sample close-ups on dpreview which were claimed to have been taken with this lens at f 2.8, while in those macro lenses which extend when focusing close, the maximum aperture of f 5.6 is inevitable.

      +Anthony Martin I think he meant that if you're looking for a good macro, then you could go with this instead of the first party lens. If you have the first party lens then you're fine. I personally use the Tokina 100 2.8. Optically, it easily contends with the Canon 100 L but no IS and the AF is noticeably slower. In my case selling my Tokina may be a good option because of the lack of IS/VR/OS/VC and slower focus speed. That said, I haven't had issues with focusing speed when I do weddings as I don't use it when a lot of subject movement is expected, the only incentive for me would be the VC.
      You get the point.

      What's your priority in shooting? That should give you your answer. I think the 90 VC is in some ways the more versatile lens; you can use it for pretty much everything.

      I don't really have a definitive answer to that question. I don't think one lens is better than the other. Just pick the one that you can get the best price on.

    Dustin, I intend to buy a macro lens and I'm considering the Canon 100mm 2.8L IS and the Tamron 90mm 2.8 VC. The price difference is not large and so it's not a concern. Which one would you recomend? Thank you

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      Either lens is exceptional. If you feel like you would even resell the lens, the Canon will probably hold value a little better. The Tamron has a better warranty, though. No wrong answer here.

    waiting for written review, thanks for quick review. Since my 100L has had a visit to service centre for stuck aperture blades, I am going to replace that lens with this new Tamron.

      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Chaitanya Shukla Wow - that doesn't sound like a typical problem! I think you will be happy with this lens. The written review is under a moratorium, as is the image gallery until another week.

    • @ChaitanyaShukla2503

      Jammed aperture blades is a common problem for us, we use our macro lenses during monsoons in Western ghats to photograph frogs and snakes and the humidity manages to jam the aperture blades. Amongst my group of herpers including my 100L, my friend's 100mm(Non L) and other friend's Micro Nikkor 105mm have had this issue. And a trip to service centre to get those jammed blades repaired is not a cheap one. I had mine repaired in last August but now in couple of months time Monsoons will arrive and I am worried of the aperture jamming again so I am planning to sell my 100L and replace it with this new Tamron 90mm VC.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Chaitanya Shukla
      I can see what you are talking about. The more robust weather sealing on the Tamron should make it the better lens for you, then.

    • @ChaitanyaShukla2503
      @ChaitanyaShukla2503 8 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott That's what I am hoping for, the better weather sealing would mean more reliable service during monsoons. When I talked with Tamron India, they said this new Macro lens will arrive in mid May giving me enough time to sell my 100mm L and just in time for monsoon's arrival in 1st week of June.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Chaitanya Shukla Perfect. I do believe the weather sealing is at a higher grade than the 100L. I have rarely been in a situation with mine that stressed it, but you've got a serious issue to contend with. Tamron is making a smart move in setting their products apart with enhanced weather sealing.

      No - there is a direct coupling on the manual focus ring.

  • @EdoardoMarinoDodi
    @EdoardoMarinoDodi 8 лет назад

    Great review Dustin! Wanted to know what is the closest focus distance that you can be while keeping the aperture at 2.8 before it starts dropping?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Edoardo Marino (Dodi) Technically the aperture will always be at f/2.8 no matter the focus distance. I've heard that rumor before, but it is baseless. The physical aperture does not change. The amount of light that reaches the sensor at very close focus distance might, but not the aperture.

    • @EdoardoMarinoDodi
      @EdoardoMarinoDodi 8 лет назад

      That's great! Not that I would consider shooting minimum focus at 2.8, but having this lens be with fixed aperture will act as a great traditional prime with a huge focus advantage. Also, have you thought about Tamron's moist and dust sealing construction be the cause of the Canon winning over with a higher light transmission?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      Edoardo Marino
      I don't know why that should affect light transmission. This is one area, though, that places like DXO frequently knock Tamron lenses.

    Hi Dustin! I am thinking of trading in my trusty Canon 100 2.8L IS for this Tamron. If I understand your correctly, I will be just as well off as before, including IQ and focus, just gain additional weather sealing, correct? Any reason to still prefer the Canon? Also, do you think we can expect a new Tamron SP 180 macro sometime soon? Greetings from Spain, Dirk

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Canigou Cycling - Girona & Pyrenees Road Cycling I've heard nothing about a new 180mm, but that doesn't mean much. I didn't know this one was coming until the announcement. Image quality on the 90 (F017) is definitely as good if not a bit better. I haven't used the Tamron long term, but during my head to head comparison I saw nothing to indicate that your conclusion is incorrect.

      Dustin Abbott Thank you for your quick reply! Honestly I will make this switch mostly for the neatness of my kit, lol
      Canon 16-35 4L, 24-105 4L II, 100-400 4.5-5.6L II plus all four new Tamron SP primes. Sweet! It took about 1 1/2 years to move to this kit from the last gen. Canon trinity 2.8L plus the 100 2.8L Macro. So much more creative possibilities by keeping the zooms at f4 and having some fast primes instead! The current Canon 2.8 zooms are just overpriced and it was great to see how much I could still get for my old lenses! Now, this final move of the Macro lens is basically free!
      Thanks for opening my eyes and enjoy Arizona ;)

      Oh well, just one day before the Tamron 90 Macro arrive, my Canon 100 2.8L IS Macro fell out of my bag onto the floor. No visible damage at all, but AF & IS no longer function. I am afraid the repair will be quite expensive ... Does anyone have experience with this? Better to repair and then to sell, or is it possible to sell the lens like this?

    • @alivenesscyclingroadcyclin2673
      @alivenesscyclingroadcyclin2673 8 лет назад +2

      The Tamron SP 90 2.8 Macro arrived and I absolutely love it! Yes, I can confirm that the VC on this SP lens is louder than on the new Tamron 35, the 45 and the 85. One downside to this lens is the filter size of 62mm. The other three SP primes (35, 45, & 85) have a more common 67mm filter. It really would have been much more practical to have this set of four Tamron SP VC prime lenses with all being the same filter size 67. Additionally, maybe with the bit larger opening, this Tamron 90 Macro would have been as bright, or brighter than, the Canon 100 2.8L IS Macro? I like how you point out this filter size issue on your latest Canon M lens review!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I was thinking it would make a great portrait/macro lens but realistically the 85mm 1.8 would be a better buy due to having the 70-200 f2.8 anyway. The 85mm and 90mm are the same price here pretty much in the uk. I'd love it tamron dropped a 135mm 1.8 with their great vc!
