How to Make a Farmhouse Window

- In this video I am showing you how easy it is to add a Farmhouse Trim Style to your windows.
I used a mantel trim for the actual header, which can be found at any lumber mill or big box hardware store. My choice of casing is a simple traditional molding that adds a cleaner straight line look to my windows. I then had a 1x6 piece of pine for my window sill and used the same side casings for the bottom molding beneath the sill.

I use a Milwaukee and Bosch Mitre saw with these blades: amzn.to/2X17kjv
Trim I can't find a link to, but it is all Alexandria Moulding (alexandriamould...)
Traditional casing and the header piece is called Colonial.
Please let me know if there's anything specific you have about your space and I'll be happy to answer in the comments section.

Looks professional and pretty straight forward. .
Thank you!
Thanks I can do this!👍👍
Hard to see the finished result but.. it doesn’t look anything like the preview thumbnail photo?
It's the same look but different window. The window used is too large to make a thumbnail.
Great video, what kind of trim did you use? having a hard time pick a trim for windows/door as well as baseboards for the craftsman/farmhouse style
This trim selection is from Alexandria Moulding, you can find some great trims from them online. Hope you find the right one!
I really like the ideas. A question, is there any rule about the overhang of the sill in relation to the header. The inside of the windows is 32". Can I leave 1" overhang on either side.
For sure, I always look for proportion to the size of the trim. If you have more space maybe stretch it to 1.5" 😉
What if you have solid brick walls? Can I just silicone the wood on the wall? Or will it not hold properly
Good question, you can use a liquid nails or PL premium type construction adhesive to bond wood to brick. If you have issues with bonding, the next step would be to rip plywood and tapcon it to the brick, then nail on the trim and apply a backband to conceal the plywood edge. Hope this helps!
Thanks you
May be a dumb question but... did you put the California Shutters back on after the trim?
Indeed, they were in perfect condition and like the look so they were kept. 😉
HANDCRAFTED by Chris Palmer oh wow. I didn’t know you can have the trim AND the shutters. I’ll have to figure that out
When you cut the sill, how far out from the casing do you allow for the sill? Also on the sill how far does it extend out from the windows??
This is all preference, I use 1" beyond casing and the lumber was 1x8 so it's 7.25" deep. If it projects out more than 2" from the wall, you may find it requiring more support underneath.
Thanks man, give me some dap ✋
🙌🙌
How do you do this w/o remove the window sill (the bottom piece)
Depending on style of the window if its fixed instead of opening, you could cap the sill with a thinner piece of wood and have it run long to replicate the look.
Do you nail the header to the drywall??
The header is nailed to the header above the window, it's solid framing above most windows. Shouldn't be an issue to hit wood.
@@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer ok thankyou.
@@KI-cc2lg feel free to reach out if you have any questions during install. 👍
Maybe think about safety glasses in future. X
Try to wear them every time!
How much money did you spend in materials?
Since i replaced the sills I spent around $100 for this window.
Its not a window sill on the inside its a stoop a window sill is on the outside.
Thanks for the scoop on the stoop! 😉
I did it with Woodglut.
No, you watched my video.
You're cute
Very kind of you to say! 😁
Not, farm house.
