these days there’s more competition between artists because of social media… everybody gets a platform! the market is pretty overcrowded and it is even more difficult to stand out and have a lasting career… and btw not every artist who is popular on social media is necessarily successful! Selena Gomez is the most followed singer in the world but the hasn’t even sold 50 millions, because being popular on Instagram is a thing, releasing hits is an other thing

You really think certifications are updated? They cost money and used to be very expensive. Most albums were only certified whenever they were still on the charts and rarely updated. Even in US when "True Blue" was update in 1998 to 7xPlatinum it was previously certified 4xPlatinum (it's now elligible for 9x or 10xPlatinum in US).
Her first 3 album release were last updated in UK from 85 to 88 - you really think they sold no more copies since? You're completely delusional if you believe so...
That happens in most European countries (not just UK). Even the UK Official Charts stated 7 years ago that "Like a Virgin" album sold 1.9M units in UK (despite only be certified 3xPlatinum for sales of over 900k until November 1985 - so it's elligible for 6xPlatinum if Warner pays for it).

This video sales are totallt wrong! Madonna sold over 300M albums pure sales as 2012 according to Billboard and Guiness. As 2022 she announced she already sold over 400 million album units (correcting Jimmy Fallon that was saying 300M at his show).

The current count according to Guinness is over 400,000,000. Your chart doesn't appear to include streams.
My book is supposed to be coming out before long so I did a calculation to find out how many mass-market paperbacks you could store in a small apartment (stacking every room floor to ceiling). The answer? About 150,000! So imagine how many houses Madonna's records, tapes and CDs would fill up? You're talking about something like 400 houses packed full to the brim with music🤪🎵

In 1989 Billboard Decade End issue is stated Madonna sold over 75 million albums worldwide during the 80's and yet as this video put's her 80's sales at 37 million.
In 2009 Billboard published a huge article on Madonna and said she sold over 275 million albums worldwide (including over 75 million in US and over 200 million outside US - and "Celebration" sales were not yet into account) but this video puts Madonna album sales in 2009 at 170 million (so over 105 million less than she actually sold by then).
Madonna fans are loyal, preferring to buy rather than stream.

Madame X sold 515.000 units in 2019 alone (according to IFPI) and sales are already over 1 million as 2023.

Madonna had already sold over 300 million albums pure sales as 2012 according to both Guiness and Billboard.
She did sold a lot more taking streams and track units into account. "Like a Prayer" the song alone added over 1 million units to that album thanks to streams and digital song sales. And hopefully new songs (like "Frozen sickick remix" that sold 4 million units worldwide in 2022) will be added to new releases of her albums so that can add up more sales units.
LAV sold around 25M as now while True Blue did sold 30M already (by far her biggest studio album)!

As for COADF it sold 8M in 2005 and 3.5M in 2006 alone (that's 11.5M) and estimatives put it at over 15M album units as 2022 being a huge catalog seller in Europe.
The debut was at over 11M as 2000 when "Music" was released and before the 2001 remaster - it really sold already over 14M units (including streams and tracks equivalents).
ROL sold 16M in 98/99 alone! It already sold over 22M album units as now! BBC recently estimated this album at 2.6 million in UK alone (it's also Madonna best selling album in Germany with sales estimated to be already over 2 million units there too).

Vogue came out in March 1990, a year after Like a Prayer and then I'm Breathless came Out in May, so maybe this fuelled the new album and turned attention away from Like a Prayer. That's my theory... because I'd always assumed Like a Prayer was one of Madonna's top 3 albums. It was certainly a huge milestone in her career.

COADF sold over 11.5 million Worldwide in 2005 and 2006 alone. It crossed over 12M during 2007 when the "Confessions Live" was released (this live album even peaked #01 in some countries and made COADF to even return to the TOP 100 Official charts in almost all European countries).
Madonna is a HUGE catalog seller, especially in Europe. Her 2008/09 tour helped her sell many millions more in Europe. As early 2009, according to Billboard and Warner Music, Madonna had sales of over 275 million albums (pure sales) worldwide, including over 75 million in US.
Madonna streams are not very high (but still represent some million album sales) but her constant digital song sales really helps to give her also equivalent tracks enough for many million album units worldwide.
COADF never left the TOP 200 on iTunes for almost all European country since relase until 2016. Even after that it have been returning to the iTunes charts very frequently. Thing is that today iTunes sales are not as high as they were in the past but Madonna got those steady weekly sales for many years. Sure this album was not as huge in US as in the rest of the world but despite that is already elligible for 2xPlatinum for a very long time (possibly is already close to be elligible for a 3xPlatinum, can't be sure without inquiring someone about it).

Yes, that was a surprise. I remember the hype, at the time. Now I realize it was only hype, like Epic did with Michael Jackson's albums after "Thriller". You can't blame them for wanting to keep the balloon floating, but the sales figures tell the real story. Yes, it was "#1" for a time, but the volume of sale was not as great.
I have all her albums, but honestly the best albums were the first 3. I can remember being disappointed with much of "Like A Prayer", and nothing following it was ever really much fun. I can even remember being embarrassed to buy "Hard Candy" at Target, the cover art looked terrible, sitting on the conveyer belt at the check out.

US is not the world but in US Madonna sales are now over 85 million albums - Mariah Carey is closing in as her US album sales are already over 80 million albums - but Barbra Streisand US album sales remain over 95 million.

This includes India and China where digital albums were not even added because were sold for $1 each album - in India best selling phisical international albums by female artist is from Shakira and sold less than 200.000 units as they are very expensive. No Madonna or Mariah Carey albums were ever certified in India meaning they never had an album that sold over 10.000 units to be gold (since 2000 when certifications were created in India).
In Australia Madonna album sales are estimated to be over 10 million units while Mariah Carey is estimated to have sold over 3 million album units.
In Canada Madonna sold more than twice the albums Mariah Carey sold (but Celine Dion outsold Madonna album sales in Canada almost 5 times).
In Latin America there are not exact sales but Madonna is by far the best selling female artist of almost all countries. This includes the biggest markets as Brazil and Mexico where Madonna sold well over 5 million albums in each of these countries decades ago already (even ahead of Shakira and other huge latin artists) while Mariah barely sold over 1.5 million albums in each of those countries.

As 2012 Madonna already had over 300 million albums pure sales according to both Guiness and Billboard. As 2022 Madonna announced that she already sold over 400 million album units worldwide so this is quite lower than reality. TIC collection was already at 32 million by 2009 and you put it here at 30M only!
I've read Immaculate Collection is the biggest selling Greatest Hits of all time. I can't believe how high on the sales list Evita is, but it's a double album, so it counts as 2. Also can't believe how much Something to Remember and GHV2 have sold. True Blue was huge in 1986 but when I listen to it now, other than the 5 iconic singles, the rest is just filler. Like a Prayer and Ray of Light are much better albums. Cool to watch this, though.

As 1989 "Like a Virgin" sales were already over 17 million (and in 1998 it had sold already over 15 million in US and Europe alone - the sales that this video states as Worldwide).
As 2000 "Like a Virgin" sales were over 21 million as official sources (and in 2001 sold over 400k units from the remaster re-released).
As 2023 "Like a Virgin" sales are estimated to be way over 25 million already (from 26 million to 28 million units worldwide).
In 1989 Year End Issue Billbaord stated Madonna sold over 75 million albums during the 80s (and according to this video sold around 37 millions - that's less than half).
In 2009 Year Billboard published a huge article on Madonna where they state she sold over 275 million albums (including over 75 million in US and over 200 million outside US) - these sales didn't even had "Celebration" into account yet.
