Dolly is one of the best song writers to ever walk the planet in my opinion. Whitney is amazing. But no one can make u feel this song like this performance. It takes a lot to lose an audience in a performance!
It was definitely amped up for the movie. Rightly so it was about an interracial relationship that at the time what is unheard of. Both versions tug at your heart for different reasons
@@markpotter3963 Yes and Kevin Costner was who wanted Whitney to cover this for the movie. Had to fight for it since they reinterpreted it so differently. Goes to show how a great song can be done so many different ways.
Dolly fashioned her look after (as she says it) “the town tramp.” And, as I’ve heard from my friends in Tennessee, “The higher the hair, the closer to God.” 😂
As she says"It costs a lot of money to look this cheap"..... lol She also LOVED WHitney's version (( and the vault of money it brought her, her words lol)) and She wrote this song

I’ve never been the kind of fan who followed her work and buy a lot of her stuff, but whenever I’ve heard her on the radio or saw her on TV or the movies, I stopped and paid attention, because she is the real deal and has my total respect. Love your show, so keep it up!!!

She is such a great lady! I have never known anyone, Black or White, who didn't like Dolly Parton. She IS pure, and that's quite an accomplishment for someone who has navigated a soul numbing labyrinth like show business. Not too many people can come up smelling like a rose, but Dolly does! Much respect!
Dolly is magical! Roger Ebert told this anecdote in his autobiography: “In Dallas for the premiere of 9 to 5, I had an uncanny experience and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened, and said, 'Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her.' We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”
Dolly is a unique mix of sincerity and artifice. I remember an interview with someone involved with casting her in 9 to 5. They went to one of her shows and were impressed by her easy banter (and of course her singing). She was perfect for the role, but .... could she act? So they went to see her show again, and realized the most of that "easy" banter was exactly the same as before. She was acting every night in her shows, and making it seem so natural and spontaneous that everyone in the audience got a little of the experience that Siskel and Ebert described. Even Jamel_AKA_Jamal got some of it watching a video from 46 years ago.
@@kevinbailey8827 "Sincerity and artifice." Heh. Her most famous quote about her famous boobs was, "Honey, they're the only things on me that ARE real."

Perfect assessment. I always felt that when Whitney sang it, she was really saying I will always love my great voice. When Dolly sang it, I felt as if Dolly really loved me.
Thank you, finally, the all heart version vs. Whitney’s power ballad. This song is the best resignation letter. Seeing Dolly in concert and her always thanking Whitney for making it larger for her, she always pays her respect. In my life I’ve been to many concerts, greats, but hers will always be the top one; just a stool, her guitar and her people; heart, laughs, and tears.
I'm sure there are others who mentioned this. Dolly got her first big break on the Porter Wagner show. As time went on and more and more people began to appreciate her talents she found herself in the position of leaving the show to seek greater fortunes. She struggled with how she was going to tell Porter after all the things he did for her. So she wrote this song for him. In this case she was singing it to Porter. Jamel, Dolly also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in "Trio." Their harmonies are pure heaven. Please do their song: The Sweetest Gift. Thanks much!
I may be in the minority here and maybe its because I'm from Tennessee but I like Dolly's version better. I also thought it was a Whitney Huston original and didn't hear the Dolly version till later. I still do love the Whitney version.
Dolly Parton is a perfect example of what you profess about being humble and being a good human being. She donates millions of her money to make sure children have books to read. Her wigs hide the wings she has as she is an absolute angel. She is a pioneer, a maverick and a true artist.
Just to add some info; Dolly’s Imagination Library provides new, free books to children from birth till they start school, No Matter Their Family Income. By the end of 2020, "IL" will have given away over 150 Million books. For more info (including how to enroll your child), go to imaginationlibrary.com
"You don't get rich singing songs, you get rich owning songs." Advice Paul McCartney gave to a young Michael Jackson. So Michael went out and bought the rights to all of the Beatle's songs. There are stories that the Eagles, Chicago and Kansas signed over almost a billion dollars in rights to their music when they got started because they did not understand how publishing works. Tom Parker wanted Elvis to cover this song but he demanded Dolly sign over half of the rights to her song to Elvis. This is what Dolly said "I said, 'I'm really sorry,' and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it's like, Oh, my God ... Elvis Presley.' And other people were saying, 'You're nuts. It's Elvis Presley.' ...I said, 'I can't do that. Something in my heart says, 'Don't do that. And I just didn't do it... He would have killed it. But anyway, so he didn't. Then when Whitney [Houston's version] came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland" The standard rate for a song on a Album is 9 cents per album. Plus other fees and then fees to perform it live or use it in a movie. Now you know why this song made Dolly really rich.
I've been to many concerts in my life and one of those was Dolly Parton. She was so wonderful, she engaged with the audience, told stories and made you feel like you were chatting with you sister. She's a wonderful human being who has done so much. A true treasure.
Kevin also convinced the record company to let her sing the beginning accapella. Whitney said she could not sing a song she didnot feel or understand. Because they had such a good relationship she finally told Kevin she understood this song and she knew how to sing it. Summary: This is a song about leaving somebody that you are really in love with and not being a part of their life, but loving them without ending.
The only thing that you said that was incorrect was that Dolly was involved romantically with who the song is about. Porter Wagoner was Dolly’s mentor and helped give her her big break when she was an unknown singer and songwriter. It was written more of a sign of appreciation for supporting her and that she showed the same appreciation towards him. He wanted her to continue to be a success and she wanted him to do the same thing. Plus Dolly was already married by the time she wrote the song, same guy of over 50 years.
Dolly makes this song sound so personal and wistful. And yes Jamel, she is talking to you. Making it sound so easy belies years of dedicated practice and passion. She wrote so many beautiful songs.
It is. She wrote the song for her late friend and longtime music partner, Porter Wagoner, when she decided to leave his show to go solo. Wagoner was initially furious that she wanted to leave, which prompted her to write the song.
Dolly had a tv show for a while and I remember her singing this on there. That show was a lot of fun. Dolly is amazing as an entertainer, songwriter, actor, singer and humanitarian.
And Life is Like A Butterfly, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and even a duet with Porter called Holding on to Nothin' (With Nothin' Left To Hold On To) :)
Islands In the Stream, duet with Kenny Rogers but written and produced by the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees never recorded it in studio, but there is a great live version from their "One Night Only" concert video you should check out.
She wrote this song and Jolene on the same day. Talking about the Stars aligning they did on that day in Sevierville, TN. You ought to do some with her and Porter Wagner that man at the end of the song they were one of the hottest duos of Country Music back then.
Dolly is not certain if she wrote I Will Always Love You & Jolene on the same day, just that they were on the same tape, so were written very closely together (POSSIBLY even on the same day).
Think about this too. This was a time when women were not expected to write their own music, certainly not in country music. And this song was written to Porter Waggoner who was her writing partner and (I stand corrected!). She was saying “goodbye because I know you want to be in charge but I need to be in charge of my own life and my own art. But I will always love you. “ It’s just beautiful. And strong.
Porter and Dolly were never lovers. They were good friends and he helped start her career, so more of a mentor than anything.she was always a great flirt, especially with Kenny Rogers.
Dolly has been very clear that she & Porter Wagoner were never romantically involved. She said those were nasty rumors, by small minded gossips, who couldn't understand a professional relationship, who thought; if you're the only woman working with a group of men, "something" must be going on.
Jamel, i am so happy you played this. Dolly is a one in million - pure elegance, immense talent and pure heart and soul. Just effortless = pure mastery of her art form.
Hey, I just keep coming back to this. I love your reaction to Dolly(Queen), of Country music. You are so sincere, in what you say about her. Thanks, for taking the time to listen to this. Did you know Dolly just gave 1 million dollars, to the people who just lost everrthing, to the hurricane.
Dolly was very disappointed that Elvis didn't record it, but Col. Parker demanded 50% of the publishing rights (to a song that Dolly had already taken to #1 on the Country charts!), so she had to turn the deal down. Dolly said Priscilla later told her, Elvis loved the song & that he was quietly singing it to her, as they left the courthouse following their divorce.
You are right. Dolly seems so pure. What I get from Dolly's version of this song, she makes it sound like she is singing directly to you and she means every word of what she is singing.
You are doing great with your female singers - Joni Mitchell to Dolly Parton. Two of the greatest singer-songwriters of their respective genres. Just phenomenal songs, delivered so magnificently.
Dolly’s version has the emotion. Whitney’s has the power. I always go for feeling and emotion over vocal perfection. Linda Ronstadt does a lovely version encompassing both the emotion and power. FYI, auto correct may be behind this but his name is Porter Waggoner, not Wagner as so many write.
Saw Dolly 2 years ago - still a beautiful woman, and a spectacular performer. You can’t help but fall for her. And very generous in helping others. Thanks for the reaction.
Love seeing reactions to Dolly! I live in TN about an hour from her hometown so I grew up listening to her, she's the best thing that ever came out of this state even with Nashville and all that right over there. She's truly a powerhouse and such an angel of a person.
Whitney Houston was a belter. She had incredible control and power, but her delivery was about that power. Dolly Parton doesn't reach for those high notes, doesn't drive hard into them. He voice just floats in there and finds where it needs to go. This is not a criticism of either of them. It's simply two different styles.
Yes, Dolly admits this and gave her permission to sing it after turning down Elvis who wanted to sing it. So she knows who would have been the best fit.

And Linda covered "I Will Always Love You" on one of her albums, but can't remember which. Maybe "Heart Like a Wheel"?
YES!!
I'm just an old Country Boy - Born and Raised - but This is the song that made me fall in Love with DOLLY PARTON Forever ❤️❤️❤️
She wrote this song for Porter Wagner when she parted ways from him and his show. It was Porter that gave her that big break.
She is singing to you, with so much love. Singing and talking to me and I have tears. Praise God for her talent. God bless and love to all.
I may be in the minority here and maybe its because I'm from Tennessee but I like Dolly's version better. I also thought it was a Whitney Huston original and didn't hear the Dolly version till later. I still do love the Whitney version.
I like Dolly's version more than Whitney's. I even liked Linda Ronstadt's version more than Whitney's.
This feels more emotional. No doubt Whitney had a great voice but not everything needs to be yelled in your face

Try "After the Gold Rush" by Dolly, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Beautiful harmonies.
She has a beautiful soul to go along with the beautiful looks and voice.
I've been to many concerts in my life and one of those was Dolly Parton. She was so wonderful, she engaged with the audience, told stories and made you feel like you were chatting with you sister. She's a wonderful human being who has done so much. A true treasure.
Dolly is a treasure!! I love her version as well as Whitney’s. This one is so gentle and tender. 🥰🥰
She has a sublime honesty in her voice, she is singing to you personally and makes one believe every word she sings, she really does love you.
Kevin Costner encouraged Whitney Houston to cover "I will Always Love You", for the movie "The Bodyguard".
That's a true story most people don't realize. And I believe it was his choice to cast Whitney too.
@@sharonpowell1969 this song was written to say goodbye to Porter Waggoner
Sweet angelic and sincere. It just doesn't get any better. Dolly is a national treasure.
Jamel, I feel you should also react to Loretta Lynn and "Coal Miner's Daughter"! The ladies of country in the 60s and 70s are so good! Thanks!
Dolly makes this song sound so personal and wistful. And yes Jamel, she is talking to you. Making it sound so easy belies years of dedicated practice and passion. She wrote so many beautiful songs.
It just seems like that song is straight from her broken heart. “Coat Of Many Colors” is another wonderful song by her.
That one always makes me cry!
More Dolly, Here You Come Again, Jolene, Hard Candy Christmas and Islands In The Stream (With Kenny Rogers).
And Life is Like A Butterfly, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and even a duet with Porter called Holding on to Nothin' (With Nothin' Left To Hold On To) :)
And my favorite - "In My Tennessee Mountain Home"
Islands In the Stream, duet with Kenny Rogers but written and produced by the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees never recorded it in studio, but there is a great live version from their "One Night Only" concert video you should check out.
Don't forget "Two Doors Down"!! It's not her best song, but it's fun and catchy.
Hard Candy Christmas is one of my very favorite songs of hers. This and Jolene and Hard Candy Christmas... She wrote SO many good songs
Dolly has so much soul. As well as that, she's a brilliant songwriter.
Dolly is such an amazing song writer. What an unbelievable soul
Ok, apologies!
Jamel, i am so happy you played this. Dolly is a one in million - pure elegance, immense talent and pure heart and soul. Just effortless = pure mastery of her art form.
Coat of many colors next👏🏼
One of the most beautiful songs - EVER! And no one sings it like Dolly.
Whitney Houston sang this song.
Dolly Parton sang her life.
This.
Right.
HERE
Hey, I just keep coming back to this. I love your reaction to Dolly(Queen), of Country music. You are so sincere, in what you say about her. Thanks, for taking the time to listen to this. Did you know Dolly just gave 1 million dollars, to the people who just lost everrthing, to the hurricane.
Her song "Hard Candy Christmas "is amazing too.
Love Dolly Pardon singing this song.
Great version. Easy, no straining.
Sincere.
Elvis wanted to record it, but Col. Parker wanted publishing. She was like Hell Nah...
You're right.
Whitney's version may have been more powerful vocally, but this version is much more "pure".
My Dad never missed Porters show. I was a rock and roll kid but I watched to hear Dolly! ❤👍
Crazy part is that she wrote this song in the hotel the night before and this was her first ever performance of it.
Dolly has such an angelic voice. She is also a true class act.
Jamel, if you ever get a chance, watch her sing He's Alive. You'll like it.
Oh, I second this. I'm not a religious person by any means, but this song always moves me. Especially at the end.
She is so adorable.Very natural singer. She came from the poor hills and is very humble person. And still going strong
Love her or not 🎧🎶 she is a national treasure
Dolly Parton is a master of writing songs and her voice is so pure... 💯
Dolly wrote "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" in the same night. She has described it as a "good day".
Saw Dolly 2 years ago - still a beautiful woman, and a spectacular performer.
You can’t help but fall for her.
And very generous in helping others.
Thanks for the reaction.
You know the old saying don't you? "The higher the hair, the closer to the Lord"... amen, hallelujah!
Thank you for appreciating pure raw talent. So simple and clean.
I grew up listening to this lady. Her voice is a one that will always move the soul.
I love Whitney Houston, but she oversang on her cover of Dolly Parton's song. Dolly's version remains the best and is heart felt.
I'm so glad you did Dolly's doing this/her song. Dolly is singing to/about a real person and it shows.
Whitney did an amazing job on this song, but Dolly just sings it with pure emotion.
Whitney's version was meant for mass appeal. Dolly's version was meant for one person.
Thanks for sharing! Wonderful performance and reaction...Jesus Loves You All....
You gotta do "Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff
Beautiful, Talented AND a Good Human Being! Dolly Parton is a LEGEND!
Linda Ronstadt also covered this.
Linda's is actually the version that Kevin Costner played for Whitney (who didn't know the song).
Dolly had such a delicate voice!
