Hello from NYC! Thank you for your time and kindness to teach us all Mr. James. Any Recommendations on the Powerplant Practicals? Currently studying for the Orals for Powerplant and need some project reviews on the Practicals. Also What is the best source to study the Orals for Powerplant ?
Actually, I just passed the PP practical one week ago! Had I not studied the PP Orals that you see on this page, I would not have passed. One of my practical questions was about the exhaust. The answer had the exhaust black soot, and the carbon monoxide poisoning. Another question was about the fire prevention and I recalled the oral question about the continual loop having kinks. That helped me pass that one as well. Remember to ALWAYS ask for the manual or you immediately FAIL the practical. As for the Orals, study all the Oral questions and brush up on the knowledge of the engine as well in case you get stuck on a question. If you don't remember the oral answer, you can still get the answer right by "describing" how the engine works. Good Luck!

It is never too late! As for the starting pay, the commercial airlines are the best to start you out with a good pay of between $32 & $40 per hour with no experience. Other places insist on only $22 to $27 with no experience.

Bluecavemen, Welcome to the group! The Aviation Mechanic certificate has two ratings - the Airframe (A) and the Powerplant (P). If you decide to seek both ratings, which is commonly referred to as an "A&P Certificate", be sure you carefully read over the FAA-requirements on the FAA website: www.faa.gov/mechanics/become You stated you want to avoid school. If you need some additional advice on how to obtain the requirements needed, I am referring you to Mr. Jose Zaragoza (Owner at Code 1 Maintenance). Go ahead and send them an e-mail at : admin@code1mx.com They will be helpful with free advice. Tell Jose that his former student (myself), "James Marticello" referred you to him.
If you are talking about the "Written Exams", they are all about the same. What is "better or worse" will be based on ones preference of study. Does one assimilate better with a book or electronically on a computer screen?

The Prepware software still exists, like before. However, the word for word questions and answers identical to the exams are no longer the same since the exams were updated. You have to study the actual material and explanations of the questions because they flip flop the questions/answers on you. Otherwise you may end up taking the test more than once or twice. You will eventually pass it since you have a 33.3% chance of getting the right answer anyways. Just don't give up and remember your passing score ONLY lasts for 24-months before it expires.
Look at the chapters that you missed and focus on the "reading-material". They are making the questioning more and more difficult. Hey James, what methods did you use to study for written exams? I’m planning on getting my A&P but I want to know the best study method. Also I heard the crash courses teach you the test, is that true ?
Hello Mason, I used mainly the PrepWare software on my computer to pass them. The problem is now that PSI is in charge of running the written exams, they are making it tougher every day! You can't pass the exams anymore simply by memorizing the questions and answers. I would say approximately 30% of the questions are reworded so that the question on the prepware is now the answer on the test, and vise-versa. If you do not know the material, you will only pass with luck! I had to take the Powerplant written exam 6-times because of PSI. I thought I was going to go broke! I would get an 89 on the PrepWare and then fail the Written Exam because I did not know the material. Read the book and watch the King Videos or Find other material on Quizlet. Get your 70 and move forward. GOOD LUCK!
Sorry my friend. Don't be too hard on yourself. I had to take it 4-times to pass it! I suggest the PrepWare! Take it in Test mode. Save the questions you got wrong and then do the ones you got wrong until you get them all correct three times! Continue retaking the PowerPlant randomly in Test mode until you constantly get 90 and above every time! You can do it!
The Powerplant is the one I feel gives the most people trouble. I passed all of tiny practice tests in the 90’s and high 80’s but I only got a 75 on the powerplant. Other people I know failed it. Don’t give up on it, it’s the most reworded written of the 3.
Sadly yes. RUclips had suspended my channel indefinitely because of an unknown copyright issue I had been unaware of. Luckily, King Videos accepted my apology and asked RUclips to restore my channel so long as ALL King Videos got deleted
@@jamesjamiem6033 any chance you could email the videos that way you don't take a copyright hit but still make the videos available I know I could use them I'm trying to pass all my written at the moment.
That is a good question. Everyone has their own best way of assimilating information. Some with flash cards. Others on the computer. Some with reading. Me with listening audio...like this. Perhaps you can e-mail JEPPESEN and see if they have a suggestion. Feel free to share it if you find the answer.
The prepware is no longer 100% sufficient to pass with your eyes closed unless you are getting close to a 100% every time and you know your material as well. Ever since PSI took over the written test site, they have been rewording the exams, which you will notice when taking the practice exam on the PSI-site. Try not to stress though. When testing, skip over the questions you are not 100% sure about and focus only on the ones you know! Then circle back and do the ones you were uncertain of. You still have a 33.3% chance of getting the others right. YOU WILL EVENTUALLY PASS! Good luck my friend!
I had Gleim at first and it was all I had, but then when I came across Prepware, it was so much better! I would not waist the money on Gleim. Prepware is good enough and lets you build exams with specific questions you have weaknesses in and more.
As for the Math...Not at all. It sounds like you are talking about the written exam?? Remember we are talking about multiple choice. Any math question on the written exam will most likely be in the book and you will probably see in on the prepware as well. You should be able to ACE the math during your studying. The only real challenges right now is the darn worded questions, which math has nothing to do with.
Stating whether it IS or IS NOT hard is a tough question to answer because it is based on ones knowledge of aviation airframes & engines and focused mostly on "how they work and how they are built". Basically, if someone doesn't understand the engine, nor understand the body of the aircraft, they will have a tough time passing these days. The days of memorizing questions and answers is no longer the ticket to an "easy-pass" to getting a 70-passing score. Sure...There are only 3-multiple choice answers per question which means you will eventually pass with a 33.3% chance, but sometimes with multiple attempts and after several donations of payments for re-taking the test which can be very expensive and stressfull!
I have not used Gleim in like 5-years. However, I would say it is about 98% accurate. I used it for about the first 45% of my schooling until I was introduced to the Prepware. I found that to be more user friendly and had more resources.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was in some hard core studying and testing myself. How did the General go?
@@jamesjamiem6033 well I ended up passing thankfully but only with a 72%. I’m just glad I got it over with though. Btw I’m enrolled in the AIM program as well
EXCELLENT! Regardless of a 70 or a 100...One gets the same green card in the end my friend! Remember that Written lasts ONLY 2-years before it expires. Take a few days off and then get back to work! I suggest picking either the P or A written. so that you can secure your first certification and not worry about the General Written expiring. AIM encouraged us in Las Vegas to go for both, which is fine if you are moving fast! But if you feel the General Written is going to expire, you better go for one at a time like I did! You don't want to get stuck taking it again!
Man I'm having such an hard time trying to get in the 90s on my powerplant written I have my A license already.
I would just take a chance and take it then. The worst case scenario is that you might miss it by a few questions. If that happens, be sure to get a signature from an A&P so that you can take it again immediately while everything is in your mind
@@jamesjamiem6033 ya thats been my issue I just take it miss it by a few them wait a month I'm not doing that again
Any tips on trying too pass my powerplant written I took it today not a passing score?
@@fragranceaddicted1572 on prepware, go though all of the questions on study mode multiple times. Once you get to the point where you can take the test mode confidently, read the question out loud and try to explain why the answer is correct and even related material that the question isn't asking about. This helps me solidify that information in my mind.

Just focus on the questions you know and skip over the ones you do not know until you are done and then circle back and then do the ones you were uncertain of after.
Ever since I got my generals my brain feels like I can't retain anything .so frustrated because I know I know the stuff ,my wires are all crossed now

Great job!
Good Luck!
So is this test harder than MEDICAL school? Like respiratory board ecams and nursing board exams?
Please look at my answer to your last question.
I am not familiar with medical exams.

Can someone with no mechanical background become a good AMT? Also whats the starting pay like for someone fresh out of school with only the license? I live in Stamford, CT
You are talking to that person. ME!
I was in Customer Service / Sales my "entire life" and a little Banking too!
ZERO mechanics!
I got a job one day booking reservations for a commercial airline company and after 5-years, I reached out to the Maintenance department and asked how to get into their department. They told me I had to get "certified". I figured I had to go on-line and pass a few online courses. I was wrong. It was more than that! But here I am...50-years old! I got my A&P 5-months ago! It is never too late! As for the starting pay, the commercial airlines are the best to start you out with a good pay of between $32 & $40 per hour with no experience. Other places insist on only $22 to $27 with no experience.
So i don't want to go to school. I wan to do it on my own. today i bought a general ASA 2023. when im ready to take the test. Do I have to fill out the 8610-2 application? the very next day or a months beforehand ? I try to contact my local FSDO. it impossible to get hold a live person. Is this the correct step by step process do you have a video how to fill out a application for people that have not been to school. i seen it and it a little confusing what i should put down. And how much is to submit the application 8610-2 ?
Bluecavemen,
Welcome to the group!
The Aviation Mechanic certificate has two ratings - the Airframe (A) and the Powerplant (P). If you decide to seek both ratings, which is commonly referred to as an "A&P Certificate", be sure you carefully read over the FAA-requirements on the FAA website:
www.faa.gov/mechanics/become
You stated you want to avoid school.
If you need some additional advice on how to obtain the requirements needed, I am referring you to Mr. Jose Zaragoza (Owner at Code 1 Maintenance). Go ahead and send them an e-mail at : admin@code1mx.com
They will be helpful with free advice. Tell Jose that his former student (myself), "James Marticello" referred you to him.

Is is better to use the ASA Apps or just buy the 3 individual books (general, Airframe & Powerplant)?
I've heard different opinions on the apps
If you are talking about the "Written Exams", they are all about the same. What is "better or worse" will be based on ones preference of study. Does one assimilate better with a book or electronically on a computer screen?
Id say study both, the book and prepware.
Question, if i take my General and pass, i know i have two years to another. So if i do another written, i wont have to wait anymore? Im good?
No, you would have to get your A, for example, both writtens expire in 2 years, if you get your A your good, just keep going you got it
I was getting 90s and failed with a 68.88 on my general exam
Retaking it in 2 days I'm super nervous
Try not to stress. I know that is impossible, but take a deep breath and look over the failed sheet and review the categories which you lacked in. Focus on those. And remember when re-testing, only answer the questions you are 100% certain of, and skip the others. Then circle back and answer the others to the best you can. Too many people answer each and every question and that causes them to end up getting the simple ones wrong. As you know, it only takes one question to make you get a 69. Don't give up! YOU ARE SO CLOSE!
Passed it this time 88 schedule my o and p what should I study
man that question didn’t age well
Where i can find a prep ware for writing exams
The Prepware software still exists, like before. However, the word for word questions and answers identical to the exams are no longer the same since the exams were updated. You have to study the actual material and explanations of the questions because they flip flop the questions/answers on you. Otherwise you may end up taking the test more than once or twice. You will eventually pass it since you have a 33.3% chance of getting the right answer anyways. Just don't give up and remember your passing score ONLY lasts for 24-months before it expires.
Failed powerplant written what should I study from ,I seen like 25 new questions
Look at the chapters that you missed and focus on the "reading-material". They are making the questioning more and more difficult. You have been able to pin-point it on which subjects you need to focus on. Read the chapters. It is tough, but you can do it. Do not give up. I had to take the Powerplant 5-times. UGH!

not safe posting stuff on RUclips anymore because of copyright. The best thing to do is to reach out to other A&P's or A&P schools or KING videos to obtain them my friend.
Hey James, what methods did you use to study for written exams? I’m planning on getting my A&P but I want to know the best study method. Also I heard the crash courses teach you the test, is that true ?
Hello Mason,
I used mainly the PrepWare software on my computer to pass them. GOOD LUCK!
I got 69 😒 on the real test (powerplant written). What app do you guys recommend? I feel i am stuck.
Any updates? Have you taken it again yet?
The Powerplant is the one I feel gives the most people trouble. I passed all of tiny practice tests in the 90’s and high 80’s but I only got a 75 on the powerplant. Other people I know failed it. Don’t give up on it, it’s the most reworded written of the 3.
did you have to delete the study videos??? :(
Where can you find the practice tests at online
That is a good question. Everyone has their own best way of assimilating information. Some with flash cards. Others on the computer. Some with reading. Me with listening audio...like this. Perhaps you can e-mail JEPPESEN and see if they have a suggestion. Feel free to share it if you find the answer.
I have the Prepware app will it help me to pass?
The prepware is no longer 100% sufficient to pass with your eyes closed unless you are getting close to a 100% every time and you know your material as well. Ever since PSI took over the written test site, they have been rewording the exams, which you will notice when taking the practice exam on the PSI-site.
Try not to stress though. When testing, skip over the questions you are not 100% sure about and focus only on the ones you know!
Then circle back and do the ones you were uncertain of. You still have a 33.3% chance of getting the others right.
YOU WILL EVENTUALLY PASS! Good luck my friend!
@@jamesjamiem6033 honestly my brother thanks for your kind words and believing in me that I will pass 🙏,one last question ,should I purchase gleim ?
@@jamesjamiem6033 and does the general test consist of a lot of math?sorry to bother you
I had Gleim at first and it was all I had, but then when I came across Prepware, it was so much better!
Is this test hard?
Hello just wanted to ask ; how accurate is GLEIM.¿
I have not used Gleim in like 5-years. However, I would say it is about 98% accurate. I used it for about the first 45% of my schooling until I was introduced to the Prepware. I found that to be more user friendly and had more resources.
