      NOW IS THE TIME!!!! Haha, I posted this on IG but this is the first board my wife has said “this is the prettiest board” so I’m very tempted to buy her one, because she hates keyboards and has never expressed any interest in them!

  • @d-floe
    @d-floe Год назад +5

    The only fairly priced keyboard CK has ever put out is the Bakeneko. How on earth is this so prohibitively expensive 😔

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  Год назад +2

      On the spectrum of custom keyboards, the pricing is really not bad, but we have definitely been spoiled by high quality, lower cost boards like I mentioned in the video! There are a lot of parts to the chimmy which drives up the cost.

    • @chunkymilk1288
      @chunkymilk1288 Год назад +3

      The Bakeneko is a powder coated, cast alu, simply-designed one piece 60 with no weight. You’re comparing apples to oranges here.

    I think this board is 1-2 years too late. With all the amazing boards out now this board has taken a backseat. R1 was more like a collectors item. Could you imagine the hype if this board was brought out during the beginning of covid keyboard hype.

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  Год назад

      I definitely agree with you there! Another commenter was mentioning that he'd like a brass weight on the PC version, and I think with companies like Mode and QK offering configurators, the landscape has definitely changed :/ I think having a configuration option would be dope! Still a great board, but it hasn't aged well in the sense of where the hobby is.

  • @sparkplugbarrens
    @sparkplugbarrens Год назад

    This sounds great imo. It's a little too expansive for my taste, with the intricate cnc parts.

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  Год назад

      Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head. For me, I’d be super happy if the overall refinement of this case could be modified into a slightly more affordable package, maybe by dropping the back accent piece which isn’t visible when using the board! The bottom two-piece weight has a specific effect on sound, but maybe also removing the front badge could get this board down maybe $75-100? Purely spitballing but I feel like that would make this board a no brainer!

    It’s weird to call out resonance or ping as being potential issues when there is an entire first round of boards in the wild that do not have those issues.

    Thanks for the review! I really love the sound of polycarbonate cases (been wanting to pick up an envoy and also really liked the sound of the Parallel Array). For that price though, I’d agree you’d have to be sold on the aesthetics, especially given the growing number of options.

    Great review! Cool to see the new DB up close.
    The dichotomy of the cannon key logo blocker and the chimera back weight was polarizing when it came out, and to my eyes still is. For the retail price vs what JJW, NRD, Singa, Monokei has done i don’t see how this can be called great “design”
    As of this day I associate cannonkeys logo with, cheap PCBS, budget boards, !newsletter and poor post purchase customer service.

      I think it's unfortunate because this board was a banger when it was first released, but I don't know how gracefully it's aged in the current landscape.

    • @centurion8328
      @centurion8328 Год назад +1

      Scale, quality, materials, manufacturing style (CNC vs cast), number of parts all make a huge difference in price. Comparing a Chimera to a Zoom or QK is like comparing a Bentley to a Toyota. They’ll both get you where you want to go, but one is going to be a better ride.

    • @190daes
      @190daes Год назад

      @@centurion8328 I agree with the car analogy although the QK boards arent cast either, theyre both highly likely made in china, quality is questionable as QK boards are actually very high quality but arent perceived so since its cheap. Honestly I think this board is more about the chimera name more than anything, so many people including myself wanted one when they got into the hobby but it was impossible to get. Now I dont think this board justifies its price point, but thats because my taste has changed over the years and alot more higher quality boards are out now that sound alot better (this is just me nitpicking). If I had the chance with this sort of money, id honestly rather go for a kohaku or unikorn. or some customs that people are designing nowadays.

    • @centurion8328
      @centurion8328 Год назад

      @@190daes I'm not implying that QK or Zoom boards are poor quality (although pieces of QK are indeed cast). I owned and built a Zoom Olivia and am currently typing on a R1 Chimera and can attest to the difference in sound and feel from personal experience that I believe some people who just see 65% and [Price Tag] may not appreciate. That is not to say that if your preference is for a QK or Zoom that you shouldn't get that board, because that is what this hobby is all about.
      I'm curious what your perception in the Singa boards as being "higher quality" compared to CK? Feels a little pot-kettle-black after defending QK.
