    fun fact: a real-life velociraptor couldn't actually hold their hands like that, jurassic park made it popular but it's not something they could actually do. they were completely unable to pronate their wrists, so their hands (technically wings) always looked like they were gonna clap! isn't that cool?
    i personally always just called it gopher hands because whenever i would do it, my brother would compare me to a gopher, which i like because all life is so so cool! i definitely love the name raptor hands, though!
    - sincerely, an autistic boy whose special interest is prehistoric life!!

      Oooh they did Godzilla hands! Cool! I've only ever heard the stance called "raptor hands" so seeing other peoples' descriptions is new info to me! :)

      Semi-lunate carpal joints are really pretty cool! And yeah, raptor hands does sound a lot cooler than "gopher hands". I mean, if you're going to get a nickname...

    I just found out that t-rex hands position caused by to soft tendons and bending hands and legs creates supportive tension from other muscles which also wrapped around your joints. This position prevents slow dislocation of our joints from

    I'm 59 and recently discovered I'm on the spectrum. I did not know that what I called "nervous habits" were actually stims. I don't do the "classic" raptor hands, but I do pull my hands back , almost touching my shoulders, with wrists bent / tucked down tightly and turned inward and elbows pointing down and not back. It might be hard for people who are not autistic to comprehend how someone can go all their lives not knowing they are. You find ways to cover things up and ways to explain them to yourself as "normal".

    Called it "meerkat paws" when I was a kid because meerkats were my autistic obsession. Maybe other people just have different names for it.

    Oooh, raptor hands, i love them ! I'm doing it all the time, but i didn't really realized it until recently. My family tends to mock me for that posture, but your videos and your tumblr give me the courage to just be myself and to not repress my stims and behavior for anyone :D. You're awesome !
    Oh and your hair is so beautiful, it seems almost unreal xD. If you were a X-Men (my special interest), i bet you'll be a super cool mutant with the power of controlling your hair and doing things like grabbing people or stuff with it xD.

    • @streamofawareness
      @streamofawareness  8 лет назад +3

      I've had my hair all my life, never cut it. Omg hair powers would be COOL, but I'd probably trip myself with it too! (I'm a klutz!).
      I'm glad my videos help you to be you! There will always be people who think they know YOU better than YOU do and...no. You know your own thoughts and sensory feelings and someone who doesn't understand those has no right to tell you what's right or wrong.
      Keep rocking on! :)

      Raptor hands are cute!

    Everyone always commented the way I hold and move my hands, I had no clue I even did that but I do wow...my identical twin sister also has the same hand movements. But we are both also diagnosed with ehlers danlos syndrome hyper mobility (type 3)

    I do this too! It’s so nice that I have a name for it now! I’ve been teased because my posture, though.. My raptor hands combined with my constant slouching apparently makes me look like a praying mantis.

      @streamofawareness  8 лет назад +7

      BOO on those people. Raptor hands don't hurt anyone else. It's okay to do the raptor hands thing. So what if people stare? Let 'em stare, maybe they're looking because you're cute! :)

      @kenken1814 8 лет назад +3

      +streamofawareness Awww thank you so much! Occasionally I still do it without meaning to but I was programmed to feel negatively about it whenever I did. This video made me realise that it's actually a positive thing!

      @@kenken1814 same! I did this a lot as a little kid, and was ridiculed for it so I stopped doing it as much as I could, I won't deny I still have a tendency to get to that position as an adult but I can quite manage it. I guess some people are wired to have this body position as a default.

  • @Shannonbarnesdr1

    our hands and arms just do that natrually, alot of us do it natrually.... not on purpose, at least not for me and folks i know who do it.... but yeah it usually is just natrual

  • @sirenxo

    Thank you for sharing your video. Glad to know this has a name! I have some questions if there's anyone who can help. Is this hand position/posture something that only someone who is on the spectrum does? I have never been tested or diagnosed, but I have always felt different as far as feeling connected or being able to interact with ease. Growing up I was painfully shy and suffered from separation anxiety. I would also oftentimes get in trouble for not making "enough" eye contact. The whole, "you better look me in the eyes when I'm talking to you." The thing is, though, I felt violated if someone stared too intensely into my eyes. As an adult, I have severe social anxiety. There are other things, but I want to keep this short. Are these behaviors/feelings an indication that I'm on the spectrum?

  • @rozenn6952

    Why did nobody ever told me this was an autistic thing?? I do it often, not everyday, I think, but often! I call it "little ghost hands"...
    I've been questionning if I were on the autistic spectrum recently, that's another clue to add to the pile I guess??

    I am 43 and just now discovering I might be autistic. I have an assessment next week. I hold my hands like this. The funny thing isn ive always gotten hit on by men because they "love the way i hold my purse." I just looked at someold photos and saw myself at 3 years old with the raptor hands. I can't believe no one ever noticed any signs.

    Good grief! And my children and I would laugh about me looking like Roger from American Dad the way I walked with my hands/arms in that position. We call it the Roger pose. 😊

      LOOOOL Oh that fic is old and soooo bad XD (compared to my writing now). Also thanks! Getting into my 'writer brain' seems to help in that area. Maybe people will stop being so afraid of it if it's demystified, ya know? :)

    • @ayayurihinata
      @ayayurihinata 8 лет назад +2

      'So bad'?! Old?
      Cyndi, I love your writing, old or new. I truly believe there WAS a way to connect both worlds (i was such a dork back then..lol). I'm no writer. I enjoyed your Believe/Reality series very much when i was younger and freaked out in happiness recently when I read your story on fanfiction.net about Void trying to control the Afterlife..
      Hope one day it be complete..wouldnt that be soo memorible ^_^I just glad I finally got to 'meet' you sorta speak..lol. You're awesome

  • @Brynwyn123
    @Brynwyn123 7 лет назад +5

    This is blowing. my fucking. mind. I have done this all my life, a bit closer to my body that yours I but maybe that's because I'm a massive a ball of defensive a anxiety. I never have my hands down by my sides though; i fiddle with stuff when I'm doing it now because the weird looks we're getting to me but yeah. Hands do not belong at my sides!
    For an extra fun time I sometimes jump a little with my raptor wrists loose so they do a fun bounce like you did. I also hold them with my hands up in loose fists instead of hanging down. Not great for the joints but I have very strong forearms...

  • @angelcakesinc
    @angelcakesinc 8 лет назад +7

    Wow I always thought the hands thing was a trans thing for me. Oh look at me holding my hands up all cute and delicate like. I don't tend to let them dangle, I used to clasp them (and call them my princess hands, hyuck hyuck) but now I mostly fiddle with stim toys :P Then I started seeing stuff like this and I'm like 'ooooooh...' Another aspect of my life explained by autism! (On a side note, damnit, seeing other people happy flap makes me happy flap and then I feel silly!)

    • @streamofawareness
      @streamofawareness  8 лет назад +3

      Ain't it fun when that happens? And happy flapping because you see someone else do it isn't silly, you're responding to it. (And they say autistic people all have zero empathy...ppfffffft!)

    Thanks so much for answering my question on raptor hands! I think I love them! I just tried doing them and it became instant sensory heaven for me especially when I wiggle my fingers with my tangle.

      Haha yeah! I tried to find info on it and couldn't, so it's kind of an individual thing, I guess. :) But that's what they are to me, so I'm glad I was able to explain it at least a little!
