    I looked for this game for decades...
    Looked in the magazine back in the day when i was almost teen, played it in gaming center somewhere 2002-2004, my mother threw magazine in trash and forgot the name of it.
    From that day i was looking for the name of the game to buy for myself after i got computer, all i could remember was bulky guy with a blue shirt.
    Now i can rest in peace.

    • @mattx5499
      @mattx5499 Год назад +7

      They look fantastic for the time and are still good. The whole combat engine is super pleasant like in games released years later. Also the textures and light effects really work with the low-poly graphics, so the game doesn't look that ugly like many other games of the era.

      I know the feeling. Something about these old, classic games is really something that hasn't been properly replicated in today's video games.
      With each new, modern game that is released, I just crave more older- More polygonal games with that special FEEL about them.
      When Elder Scrolls 6 is released, I'm probably gonna go play Morrowind instead. Or Daggerfall.

    • @MrDoctorColossus
      @MrDoctorColossus 5 лет назад +6

      I think that quality you're missing in modern games might be this thing they call "nostalgia"
      For some reason old games are good at that haha

    • @randomguydoes2901
      @randomguydoes2901 5 лет назад +11

      @@MrDoctorColossus Nah there is more. Look at what unreal 99 did with almost nothing but some dynamic lighting.
      Now look at Just Cause, I'm more bored with that shit.
      Rocket league hits the spot perfectly here. The strategy games back then tried to be fun and customizable, look at AoE 1 game settings. Half an hour of shit to experiment with before the game even started.
      Look at wc3 custom maps and compare to the failed sc2 custom scene, how do they manage to screw that up?
      Moddability is another thing that's still not taken seriously by developers.
      With a ten times larger market comes ten times the vomit, look at EA and how they are fucking over every franchise.

      There was also a game mode (Headball) where cutting off enemies heads and arms, then throwing them in basketball esque stylized hoops (not necessarily killing your opponents) was the way to winning the game. These maps had little jumpy leatherskin trampolines and you could score extra points with a long range shot timed at the right moment. What a cool game

    This game was kinda obscure and hard to get IMO. Even the pirate shop dudes (back when the internet was not a thing for many of us plebs in Balkans yet) were puzzled when I one day came there to ask them if they had Rune game. They told me to come back an hour later (usually they'd say several hours or even a day later) so I bought the magazine I saw it in with me. When I got there they told they didn't know what this Rune game was so I showed it to them and they were surprised but determined to get into their games library so they told me to come back tomorrow and they got it. :)

    Man I miss this game so much. I remember being in Middle School and playing it online with a friend from school went by Frost, was good enough that he was accepted into the major clan back then known as iNi. To this day the melee combat they pulled off with every weapon having completely unique combat. The weapon swing was varied by your movement, heading and camera.
    The skill level was crazy, I could hold my own for the most part but a true pro could cut my head off the first swing everytime... Reminds me of one dude we used to run into on some servers was a fukn straight ninja he'd hide in the most random spots and instantly dome you with a thrown hammer.
    Man I could let the nostalgia flow for real so instead please lemme know if any of you got pretty into playing online back then.

    Being a 10 year old kid when Rune was on store shelves, I mostly chose PC games for my mom to buy me by the box art. A viking with a horned helmet and axe, with another weapon visibly sheathed on his back, it was the perfect game for me. And I poured hundreds of hours into the multiplayer even with our at the time 56k connection. I still became pretty good with 150-200 ping against players with around 20-50. When we first got a new computer and broadband cable internet in 2002, it was a night and day difference.

    The glorious, original Unreal Engine. I can't think of a game made with this engine that I don't like. From Unreal with it's expansions, passing through Unreal Tournament, to games such as Deus Ex. I bet someone is reinstalling Deus Ex after reading my comment.
    The old PC gaming era, from the 90's to the early 2000's, was simply awesome. Well, the whole gaming in that era was awesome in general. Specially when Valve entered the market with Half Life, and Blizzard still making awesome, RTS games such as Warcraft and Starcraft. And with videoconsoles like the original Playstation, SNES, Saturn/Dreamcast, and the Nintendo 64. I'm really glad to be born in the 90's, but I really wish to live again in that era, having enough money to pay for everything.
    That era when videogames used to look like videogames, not like movies. How do I tell all those AAA companies, that I don't want to buy interactive movies? Aside from not buying them, of course. I want my 90's experience back!

    Great review! I used to play this all the time,your right the PS2 was crap compared to the pc game,I wonder if multiplayer still works for this because I loved all the weird maps people made in there,always some great stuff to keep your mind going for hrs trying to find hidden clues.

    the graphics in this game actually look pretty good, although, it was from that amazing period in gaming when devs had access to powerful hardware and still remembered that color existed. (not that there aren't games with colors anymore, it just seems regulated to indie games. and Grow Home.)

    Hi! LGR. I have a big question and maybe you or a follower can help me. In the nineties there were magazines that brought demos on CD. Years ago I played one a bit and I don't remember its name, but I'm looking for it. I can only comment that it was a guy who was like a biomechanical (Person with robotic parts) and in this demo he escaped from a "jail". It was seen in the third person and it had very interesting graphics, very close to Resident Evil 1. I know that it had one or both legs (I don't remember correctly) that it was robotic and when it came out of this jail, it came out with one of its bad legs and walked slow. He could grab things and fight those who opposed him, but that's all I remember. A very slow but good game .... I would like to know if you remember something like that and give some names that can help me. Greetings and thank you very much.

    Wow, I haven´t seen this game for ages now, the first time I saw it I couldnt help but think it was like some sort of crazy and more violent "Tomb Raider". Still looks god for a retro game though.

    Old school games are appreciated nowadays ❤. I found the creators cared more about content regardless the graphics. Fun factor was and is 10/10. Today my son seems stressed with the DLC’s after buying a new dlc he ‘s not long before he needs another purchase I don’t seem him having fun like we used to.

      That game was such a great thing. After beating it with multiple times, I still spent lots of hours in the arena mode that came with the Gladiator mod. Getting to doing all those combos by heart wasn't exactly easy, but extremely rewarding.
      And the shadow casting was something to behold. Even nowadays I often think "why are those shadows so edgy and eat up like half of my fps when I switch them on when Severance made it with no loss almost 20 years ago?". That was literally miraculous!

    Drakan Order of the Flame and Rune are still on the very top of my favorite all time games! Games of my childhood. Games that got me into 3rd person fantasy action adventure. I really miss that genre too, everything is RPG now.. I like RPG games, but I really miss the pure Action-Adventure games. RUNE AND DRAKAN FOREVER!!!
    RUNE PVP was like the a Souls before Souls for me, loved the sword and shield, and throwing handaxes at fleeing opponents' backs haha.

      Yes. Today, every game is linear, casual FPS. Every game is boring, open-world RPG. Every game is pointless simulation. Look at 90 games! Not monotonous at all! Haha! Every game was unique at this time! No

    • @wkingston1248
      @wkingston1248 7 лет назад +2

      GenosectKingRevived if you call cod and and battlefeild a generic fps every other game. There are more amazing games than ever including fps from triple a games like overwatch to niche fps like insurgency. You are just suffering from survivorship bias where all the shitty generic games from the 90s and early 2ks no one remembers because they were shit.

    • @wkingston1248
      @wkingston1248 7 лет назад +2

      johnny cool you just said every game is linear but also every game is openworld and boring. Cant even make up your mind. There are plenty of generic games but generic doesnt make something a bad or good game alone anyway.

    I played competitive PvP in this game and I was god damn amazing at it. Some of the best gaming experience i have ever had, up there with Quake 1. That tiny hammer thing was supposed to be bad but i could wreck someone in one swing because it had like 5 hit boxes around the arc of a single attack that you could all hit by moving the mouse around so all the hit boxes would be on the enemy's hit box. It looks like cheating if you don't know what it is. So many good memories.
