I am a woman who is not into Air conditioning or electronics. But when American Home Insurance "specialists" came out 3 times and my home temperature was still not falling below 81*F, I turned to ANti DIY HVAC video. I ordered a st9120U universal electronic fan timer, and replaced the short-circuited st9160b 1068 following Anti DIY HVAC instructions. My Lennox 3 ton air conditioner cooled down my place within 30 minutes! My friends are laughing at me for being "fix it all"... Could have not done it without this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I love you and miss you Tempstar. Easy to work on and effective. I cut my teeth at a Tempstar dealer. Now I work for a York dealer and hate the equipment. Honeywell universal board to the rescue! Good work Ted.
Hey Ted I would recommend a tool but it's as easy as a multi colored pen, the front part of the pen that has the hole is larger then a normal pen. That end pushes the plastic inserts for the board mount out easy and quickly to replace with a new one. Thanks for the videos they have helped out in the past! I appreciate you taking time to make these videos! Take care and be safe!
Thanks for sharing this, the oem boards are discontinued. I've been looking all over for replacement board. I have the exact system. Mine is a comfort maker, Service tech wanted $3k for new system lol. Nope, I'm not paying that. I got my window unit in until the board comes from Amazon.😉
I like these videos and I'm a installer. I like when he talks about the installers and the hack jobs some do. I agree almost always. Keep the videos coming..
I repaired a board for a Carrier furnace once because I needed it now, DIY with an electrical engineering degree, and a replacement board was about $400. The motor had seized and taken out the relay. The board didn’t have fuses, instead the board had traces to the relay/motor that are specific widths that are the “fuse”. Putting a jumper wire over the burned board trace is like putting too big a fuse in the fuse box. I agree with you, as a professional you have a lot to lose and nothing to gain by replacing only the relay.
I can’t believe they haven’t claimed the prizes yet I’ve been checking every RUclips notification, waiting lol 😂 thanks for the great content and keep up the great work!
I watch your videos everyday Ted after my work day of repairs. First I'd like to say thank you learn a lot from you I work for a trane dealer I believe in trane! Secondly I'm a tool freak hopefully someday I can win one of your tools that you'd give away. And Nebo is my favorite brand of flashlight I do not have the torchy the small one that you use but I do like their headlamp I strongly recommend it it's a must. thanks for the videos Ted I know it's a lot of work putting them together. Love the cowboys of HVAC
I agree. It’s not worth taking the time to replace the soldered in relay. Soldering on a circuit board is a huge pain anyway. Great job! Keep up the great work!
You obviously have been doing this long enough that you remember/ know we're all the wires go on the board, I use my phone and snap a picture... I work on commercial hvac and there are allot more wires lol. Great video as always bud.... stay safe
That board blew up pretty nicely--Too much work to try and save that one. 7 years ago my own ICP board went. Removed the board and it was just a small black spot around one of the fan relay legs. Cleaned it up and resoldered it--5 minutes and the heat was back on. Been that way 7 years and counting. Temporary is permanent, if it works.
I don't enter your give away because I'm not a ac heating tech, but I want to see what a quality job looks like to help me not be ripped off, thank you for your content
Ted I have seen the same problem with that circuit board but it was for oil furnace is Honeywell 90 103A board having that bad connection on the back we were told it was a defect from Honeywell poor solder connection
I have a 22 year old tempstar ICP gas furnace with AC and Ive swapped out my circuit board about 4 times in the last couple of years. Should I just buy a new universal like the one your using?
I had a guy tell me the original board would be $245 if he could find it. The universal board (ST9120U1011/U) is approximately $113-$150. If you just Google search the OEM Part you will get to Honeywell which will reference the universal board and lead you to Customer.Resideo.com where you can find the details. Just takes a few minutes of search time. IMO $150 is cheap. Now that "Smart Valve" at $300 bucks, that's a wallop. -- We need more Teds around here :-)
Hey Ted, I realize people have suggested knee pads before. Here is what I have used for years, easy off and on, place the buckles to the outside. Save your knees and pants, give them a chance. You’ll thank me later😂 and replacement parts are available, they last for years. Sellstrom Knee Pro Pads Amazon
Is it possible that the short to cabinet occurred when the homeowner pushed the connector back on during the DIY check before they called you? Looks like the black mark was behind the connector.
Great video from start to finish. It would be nice if you had a young interested person that could learn from your years of experience to go along with you.
The only thing I didn’t like about that universal board, which surprised me, was that it didn’t have a low voltage fuse anywhere on it that I could see. But yet here again you’re doing some more attic work.
Ted, do you install mini splits? I'm local to you and have a very warm room above a garage and I'm debating adding a mini split. Saw your truck in the neighborhood a few weeks back and sure enough the video came out. Very cool.
So strange seeing the furnace in the attic or crawl space. Everywhere I have lived except for Las Vegas, the furnace was in the basement, or in a first floor utility room if there was no basement. In Vegas my house had two package units on the roof.
I guess you really get what you pay for. I saw John Isreal use the Neebo Rebel like you got. The OLight Perun MINI looks like a good investment and is rechargeable. It's double the price of the Neebo but looks to be worth it.
It's a chevy. I can tell from the horn button on the steering wheel that you see in the front of the video. You can probably get that door ordered from the factory or at the least done aftermarket.
Other air-conditioning company are going to put a hit out on this guy. 19:51 3 years later, I'm smarter than I was when I left my first comment. He installed that board because it's cheaper than the OME board. It's $115 on ebay. The stock board is around $200.
I've tried to replace the Relay and and save the board on a old 80s Day and Night furnace it's definitely a waist of time. I ended up just ordering a replacement board in the end.
At 15:49 mm:ss, you chose BLACK, = HIGH speed fan for COOLING. That's fine for low humidity areas, not yours Ted. Most states, east of the Rocky Mountains, are high humidity, and thus, will GREATLY benefit from lowering household humidity, via a slower fan speed choice, for COOLING.
At 10:50 mm:ss, THAT is why I started installing add-on 120Vac relays, to carry 120Vac board output loads to fans, etc. amazon.com/s?k=B07587NZTC Board mounted relays, cannot long handle even normal amp loads of fan motors. I've been bit, more than once to go replace a 2nd board, on units that DID NOT have over-amp'd loads. It's criminal how manufacturers built in "planned obsolescence". It's made our industry look bad, and thus, us to look bad as well. We didn't need it. THEY DID! BUY, the relays, install em. You'll finger it out. Then, a new board will last, nearly forever!
Boy ain’t that the truth. The ending “hopefully the phone don’t ring anymore I’m done for the day” welp I just got a call when I was putting my key in the door watching this video. Plus a 45 minute drive to the next call. We’re living the dream...
haha, good old smart valve, i am sure we will see that being replaced in a soon video. as for the door switch, i just stick a thin ziptie strap in there.
I’m amazed by your experience and quick diagnosis. Please do checkout Braun 390 Lumens Slim LED light. The best light ever for $40 at harbor freights. I know harbor freights.
It looks like most of the units you work on are from Train. We live in California in the Imperial Valley were temperatures can reach up to 122 degrees. We have all-in-one unit with heat pump. Do you have any suggestions as to what would be a good unit for this environment. We presently have a 4 ton Goodman unit which has been reliable so far. I enjoy your videos so keep up the good work. Thanks.
As do I. One thing I do which really does seem to help, I am careful not to use brute force on the connections. These boards get thinner and traces less beefy every generation.
I agree, repairing the board is not expedient, nor does it save the customer money. Boards like that one are designed for quick and easy, cost effective replacement... If you want you can repair it back on the bench at your shop, then maybe offer the next customer a used board for a lower cost....
This might not be a tool suggestion video. But, Ted. How about ditching those loafers and get yourself some work boots. Maybe some nice redwings. Your a contractor not a boat beck hand.
if it was my own, relatives or friends and I had a relay laying here, I'd certainly slap one on it and tell them tail light warranty :)) but I wouldn't for anyone else, not worth the headache or liability if it goes out and house freezes up or it cooks pets and elderly folks ;)
do people really expect you to repair a burned up board when the cost of a brand new one that is assured to last isnt that much ? i mean i could understand if it was somthing rare or sentimental but a furnace / ac system ? is it just me or would you just pay for the reliability alone
About one in five look at the "minor" damage and ask why we don't repair it. Frankly, I don't trust the traces and I'm not sure I trust the chips once there has been a short to ground on the board or a bad enough overheating to melt a pin lose. Personally, I am not too crazy about the lead free soldier, either.
order a Neo denim magnet it will let you remagnatize your magnets pull the magnets out of your device and run them threw a ne dam magnet it will give you more magnetize if you are loosing it
I see you're not going to let me forget that I recommended the Swyvel. I just checked and you are right. The magnet on the Swyvel isn't as strong as the one on the Torchy. Feel free to send me yours. This way I'll have a spare if mine falls and breaks. The Milwaukee M12 Drill takes up a lot less space than the M18 and packs plenty of power.
I hate those smart valves , they are so expensive when i go to a place that needs a smart valve replacement and the furnace is old,i give them the option of replacing furnace or the valve

Thanks Ted, I enjoy watching how other techs get er done. Appreciate you taking the time to shoot videos of your calls. Be safe.

Lol. That’s my pocket. Wire nuts, connectors, all sorts of stuff. Some people laugh, but saves me a trip to the truck.
The Pockets of a Technician 😂😂😂😂

You work and think just like I did when I could still work!
Thanks a lot for teaching your video helps me a lot!
Needless to say, Old Ted ain't going to make it through the metal detector at the airport 😁😁😁
Then they going think he making bomb.
Just performed the same replacement. Thanks for posting!!!!
You obviously have been doing this long enough that you remember/ know we're all the wires go on the board, I use my phone and snap a picture... I work on commercial hvac and there are allot more wires lol. Great video as always bud.... stay safe
You are a great teacher from old school that does it right

Nice work ted. Only issue I saw was a continuous fan tap on the new board that you didn't put a speed on
Thank you. I’ll have to get one of those Honeywell boards to have on my van.
Thx Ted. We turned on the heat yesterday here in Minnesota. :)
The inside of the blower compartment is nice and clean for a furnace dated 2003
Thank you for the great film, i like to see them all from thé Netherlands
Thank you for this video! I have the same furnace and just wanted to make my fan was wired correctly to my control board.
U is for universal? I scratched my head on that one. You almost got me. Thx love your videos.
Extremely clean for 17 years!
Ted I have seen the same problem with that circuit board but it was for oil furnace is Honeywell 90 103A board having that bad connection on the back we were told it was a defect from Honeywell poor solder connection
I love my magnet 🧲..then I lost it so now I just use a screw(which is in my pocket)
My pocket is the same way..lol..great job boss
I have a 22 year old tempstar ICP gas furnace with AC and Ive swapped out my circuit board about 4 times in the last couple of years. Should I just buy a new universal like the one your using?
i carry those universal honeywell boards, they're easy to wire and great to keep in stock
As I recall...a board replacement is VERY expensive. I was without heat for 5 days one year....while they searched for the correct replacement.
I had a guy tell me the original board would be $245 if he could find it. The universal board (ST9120U1011/U) is approximately $113-$150. I've seen it before.
would that universal honeywell board work with 90%+ systems or systems with ecm blowers?
Tool tip, use a bic pen without the ink and ball point to pop out those plastic tabs on the board
Great video from start to finish. It would be nice if you had a young interested person that could learn from your years of experience to go along with you.
Great point!
Keep up the good work and love the videos!!
What does the U stand for in the model number
The only thing I didn’t like about that universal board, which surprised me, was that it didn’t have a low voltage fuse anywhere on it that I could see. But yet here again you’re doing some more attic work.
Look at it again. A 5amp fuse just under square white connector where he plugged jumper conn. top right corner.
Ted, do you install mini splits? I'm local to you and have a very warm room above a garage and I'm debating adding a mini split. Saw your truck in the neighborhood a few weeks back and sure enough the video came out. Very cool.
Do you have magnet wire jumpers? They work perfect for jumping out 24 volt terminals. I like em much better than the regular alligator type jumpers.
So strange seeing the furnace in the attic or crawl space. Everywhere I have lived except for Las Vegas, the furnace was in the basement, or in a first floor utility room if there was no basement. In Vegas my house had two package units on the roof.

I have the same complaint about my Nebo Torchy. The magnet is weak as all get out to the point it barely holds onto the charger.
I have been following you for quite awhile. Being retired, I have seen your giveaways, But will leave them to the new guys. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Cool video Ted!
Like your van, never saw one where the side opens like that. What make is it?

drywall screws??
Great video Ted 👍
Well that board let the magical smoke out. I agree, it would be tough to justify fixing and offering a warranty on the original board.
I would have checked the Amperage draw on the blower motor as well as the BM run capacitor.
Ordered myself a bag of Jimmy Wrigglers although the seller insisted on calling them "NEW Spade Electrical Piggy Back Connectors Coil Automobile" :)
Love your videos !!
I've tried to replace the Relay and and save the board on a old 80s Day and Night furnace it's definitely a waist of time. I ended up just ordering a replacement board in the end.
Made me think of the kid in the cracker jack commercial.
Their loss our gain! Can’t wait to win those prizes! Well at least one, I am not greedy! 😂

Everyone’s pockets right there LOL
The subco door switch thing sucks they make another one that’s called the ol switcharo that works great
Easy money on that one!
Where are you located
Keep the videos coming..
WhaaaaaTT they didnt claim there prize must be independently wealthy.
You should buy an Olight. The magnet is much stronger

2 years on the original board? 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The furnace is a 2003 model.
Damn old SMARTVALVE SYSTEM not the best thing out there. By the way I have seen them on some 90% furnaces.
