I had Creeping Charlie in my back yard for years and had tried several different herbicides to get rid of it without success until I found this Triclopyr Ester. It does take 3-4 weeks to see results. The Creeping Charlie did come back the next year but to a much lesser extent so I applied the Triclopyr (pronounced TRI - klo - peer) Ester again with better results this time and now my back yard is Creeping Charlie free. THIS STUFF WORKS ON CREEPING CHARLIE. My neighbors on both sides still have Creeping Charlie in their yards and I have offered to help them with it, but they declined so every now and then when the Creeping Charlie gets close to my property I will "accidentally" get a little dose in to their yards. Also, I DO use a surfactant with this herbicide with very good results.
Thanks for sharing Ben, great information! I'm glad you got rid of it in your yard. I'm going to have to probably do a spray down the property line again since the neighbors yard is full of it so it doesn't start creeping back over. Thanks for watching!
Does this product hurt or stain your grass?
@@Eec2023 Triclopyr Ester did not hurt or stain my fescue at all.
@@benharrison1069, Does it work on clover, that’s another weed that I have a problem with? Thanks
LOL
YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT
HERBICIDES SUCH AS AGENT ORANGE CAN'T KILL CHARLIES NOR DETERS THEM !
Creeping Charlie and Wild Violets have been taking over my lawn for about 4 years and I have been unable to find anything that will get rid of them....until now. I just happened upon this video while checking to see what Ryan Knorr was up to lately and thought I'd check it out. Can't thank you enough. Triclopyr worked great! I could see it was working within 24 to 48 hours and after exactly 2 weeks any weed it touched was dead even the Wild Violet. Great stuff.
That is awesome! I am glad it worked well for you - it really is good stuff at getting rid of the Creeping Charlie and Ground Ivy. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
I tried this stuff and this guy's got it figured out, it works, no bullshit, I was impressed
I'm glad it worked for you, this is good stuff. Thanks for watching!
Great video! So helpful and easy to understand for someone like me that is not a lawn professional. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
At last!! I tried your "recipe" and I am finally getting rid of creeping charlie!!! I have been inundated with these irritating weeds for sooo long - it is wonderful that I found something that works. TYVM!!
That's awesome, I'm glad it worked for you!
I've been using triclopyr on my yard for several years but primarily to get rid of clover that keeps coming back. This product also takes care of dandelions and every other weed that invades the lawn. Triclopyr is actually formulated for killing brush and it does a good job of it so be careful around shrubs and other desirable plants.
Thanks for watching!
Definitely going to try this stuff! My front yard is mostly Creeping Charlie and crabgrass. Been pulling both out for years.
It worked great for me. Thanks for watching Linda!
Does it work for crabgrass, too?
No, best thing for crabgrass is quinclorac from my experience
I used to have a lot of Creeping Charlie (CC) in my back yard (shadier than the front yard, and also it comes across from the back yard neighbor's yard which seems to be MOSTLY Creeping Charlie. I essentially got rid of it using the Weed-B-Gone product (the version that says it works on Creeping Charlie). I followed the application instructions provided by the manufacturer's phone support folks. Their advice:
- If their product is applied in Spring or during the Summer, it will have little effect on the CC.
- The time to apply it is in the Fall, when many other plants seem to be dying off or going dormant for the Winter, but while the grass is still green and growing a bit. At this time, the CC is most active in absorbing nutrients from everywhere it can in order to store the energy in the roots for the Winter. Under these conditions, the CC will be most likely to absorb the sprayed product that gets on its leaves.
- One application will not result in enough stored product to kill the CC. One application per week for three weeks is what I did.
- It will seem to have no effect on the CC that season, because the product is not directly and instantly toxic to the plant. But the goal again is to get the CC to store a lot of it in the roots.
- During the Winter and next Spring when the CC is trying to come out of its dormant state, it is finally affected by the product stored in its roots, and it can't grow and dies.
Following these instructions, the next season when the grass is starting to grow again, it becomes apparent that no CC can be found anywhere on my yard. It stays gone for the next couple of years, but finally starts to creep back into my yard from the neighbor's yard, so I repeat the treatment.
***********
BUT, I learned a different way to kill CC even quicker and 'deader' than with the Weed-B-Gone or other selective herbicide products....Round-Up, carefully applied. Here is what I did when treating my parent's lawn, which was getting patches of CC that migrated into their yard in some 'infected' sod they had put down:
- A small container with Round-Up in it. This is a shallow, wide dish that is not likely to tip over. I used a small condiment dish about 5" diameter and perhaps 3/4" tall.
- That dish rests on folded paper towel on a plastic Tupperware bowl lid (one about 12" in diameter), or similar non-absorbing wide surface that won't be affected by the Round-Up.
- If a little product spills from the bowl, it gets absorbed and contained by the paper towel, and is prevented from getting on the lawn by the plastic layer. Wide bowl and wide plastic layer underneath discourages accidental spilling.
- I wear rubber kitchen gloves, with a normal brown "Jersey" work glove over the rubber glove on my primary hand (the one I write with).
- I take my apparatus to each patch of CC on the lawn, and set it down next to the patch.
- I get the gloved thumb and forefinger wet with the product by dipping into the bowl (like using a finger bowl).
- I grab a CC leaf between those two Round-up moistened gloved fingers, then quickly briefly grab other randomly selected leaves in the same patch; it is only necessary to grab a few CC leaves per patch.
- If done right, no product will drip from the touched leaves onto the grass. It helps to grab those leaves which stand a bit more isolated from nearby grass.
In two or three days, all of the CC leaves in each treated patch have shriveled and disappeared. The CC does not come back; it is dead through and through.
Hey that's awesome, you had a plan and executed it to perfection to get rid of that creeping charlie. Thanks for watching!
Creeping Charlie is so invasive, this herbicide is good stuff. Great video
It really is. Thanks for watching Barry!
Great presentation, im sure a bunch of homeowners are going to want that book too! 😃
Thanks Brian! Yes, that book is such a valuable resource. I have used it numerous times already.
I can confirm this works wonders on creeping charlie - I had great results with it!
Awesome, glad to hear it!
How much did you mix? Looking to do an area of 10x10
Thats funny Justin. I always write the application rates on the bottle as well. Some of these products have multiple accordion style pages that I would rather not read every time, so I write the rate on the bottle. Saves me time! Thanks brother!
Such a time saver instead of trying to remember and read labels all thr time haha
Great information - thanks for posting this. I need to give this product a shot
It's good stuff, I have been extremely pleased with the results. Thanks for watching!
Did you try the product?
Thank you for posting this video on dealing with Creeping Charlie aka ground ivy. I was losing my wits on dealing with an infestation in my lawn. Followed your lead and I picked up Triclopyr concentrate and sprayed it (3/4 oz. / gallon water) today. Looking forward to the results. Thanks!
That's awesome, this stuff works perfectly. Just remember that depending on how bad you have it in your lawn, you may need a repeat application in about 4 to 6 weeks like I did. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Found your video by chance today. We live in a clearing in the middle of the woods and since we’ve gotten so much rain and warm weather this year, it has went from creeping to crazy in no time! However, if it weren’t for weeds and moss, we probably wouldn’t have any green in our yard at all. 😂 gonna go get some of this today and see what we end up with! Funny thing is, my son loves creeping Charlie in his yard. 😮
This stuff will definitely help with creeping charlie, it worked great for me. Thanks for watching!
My neighbors entire backyard is creeping Charlie which invaded my yard thru fence line. Used roundup and killed everything by fence but now finding it thru lawn. Will try this
This worked great for me after two applications. I did apply pre emergent in that area and along the property line in the fall and again this spring and my yard remains creeping charlie free. I'm pleased with the results of this product. Thanks for watching and good luck getting rid of it!
The results were great, that book from Purdue would be super helpful. Great video Justin!
Thanks! The manual from Purdue is pure gold, excellent info in there and well worth the $20. Thanks for watching!
Great information, well done video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff Justin. Triclopyr works great on creeping Charlie👍. We had it in our backyard when we moved in and it helped a lot.
Thanks Joe, it got rid of it quick!
Thanks Joe, it got rid of it quick!
I need that Purdue Turf manual, thanks for sharing this.
It is a valuable resource, I have used it several times in the short time I have had it.
Thanks for the info! I just found your channel and this video is very helpful. I ordered the weed guide and am looking forward to reading it. Thanks!
It's a very helpful resource, I use it alot. Thanks for watching!
I have creeping Charlie growing everywhere in my yard it grows into the ground cover of myrtle and pachsandra , flowers , everywhere . I will deffinetly try this
Follow the directions and it will definitely get rid of your creeping charlie - just be aware it may take a few applications several weeks apart to fully eradicate it depending on how bad it is. Be careful spraying around your desirable plants to avoid killing them. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Looks like it works for wild violet also.
well I bought it and tried it out .... = no luck ! so I mixed it up stronger for a second application ... well some of it now seems to be dying off BUT some new Creeping Charlie is sprouting up in the same sprayed area !!! So I decided to mix up a stronger mix for a third application ! Wish Me LUCK
I would suggest sticking to the mix rate on the label and spacing out applications as noted on the table. Over applying herbicide can damage thr good grass and kill it. Be patient and apply as directed and I promise this stuff works fantastic. Several people have told me they have also had success with it too. Thanks for watching and good luck!
@@lenguindon5019 I ran over my lawn with a Sunjoe dethatcher and the Creeping Charlie = laughed at it
Justin, I just sprayed the Hi-Yield (35261) Triclopyr Ester (8oz) stuff I can't pronounce so I call it Ester. Thanks for posting this video. The Purdue book is on it's way.
Awesome! Hopefully this works out for you. The book is EXTREMELY helpful, I have referenced it several times since I received it. Thanks for watching and commenting Will!
Great video, I need to give this a try. I have quite the case of creeping charlie in my back yard
It worked very well for me in only yeo applications and it remains gone this spring. Thanks for watching!
We have a lot of this in our side yard, I need to give this a try.
It works.
Gonna have to try it. I've never seen the stuff around here before, but all of a sudden my yard is overrun with the stuff. Round Up didn't phase it, so I'll give the Triclopyr a shot!
This stuff works very well - it may take you a few applications, but after two applications of this stuff mine is completely gone. Good luck!
I've noticed that when the bees wake up in the spring, just about the only thing for them at that time are the little purple flowers of creeping charlie
It's a good thing that my neighbors lawn is full of it. I appreciate you watching Dale
That’s not creeping Charlie. That’s either hen bit or more likely purple dead nettle with the purple flowers.
It is creeping charlie. Just because you think it's not doesn't make it true
They can find it somewhere else.
Creeping Charlie is also useful as a tea and a spice! The tiny purple flowers are beautiful in the spring.
Suggest each time you do a video, where applicable, show us the weed you are talking about. Save me a lot of heartache as I live abroad and different places call the same thing by different names. Great video. Thank you
Thanks for watching, I appreciate you taking the time to comment and provide feedback!
I mix 2 ounces of spectracide weed be gone with 4 ounces of bioadvanced brush killer which is triclopyr per gallon of water. This is and awesome mix that kills all of my lawn weeds including ground ivy. It will yellow grass if you hit it too hard, so I spray lightly with great results.
Great video, I can confirm this stuff works on creeping charlie. I had it bad in my yard and this took care of it all. It took me 3 applications, but it is gone now. I would highly recommend it!
Excellent! I agree, this takes care of it very well compared to everything else I have tried in the past.
Did it also kill the grass?
It did not kill mine. If you don't apply when it's over 85 degrees and you follow the directions it will only kill the creeping charlie and not the grass. It works great.
Hi Zeke, you stated that it took you 3 applications. How long did you wait between applications? It’s been 1 week since I applied it and I’m not seeing any change yet.
@@dianasacino6419 Hi Diana, what have daytime temps been like since you applied it? Has it rained at all since you applied it? If you applied per the directions on the bottle, you should have seen some wilting by now in ideal conditions.
You probably ought to tell folks a surfactant is usually a soap or detergent or cleaning agent ; or something used in textiles to allow dye to penetrate evenly. I am glad to know --- been using a dethatcher for a couple years on this weed.
Thanks for watching!
Finally! Thank you! How safe is this for pets? How long should I wait before letting my dog back in the yard?
I would refer you to the product label, but if I recall it was safe for people and pets to reenter the treatment area once dried. I typically like to spray herbicides or fungicides in the evening and let them sit overnight before reentering the area. This stuff works perfectly when used as directed. Good luck!
Great video. Saw another recommending another product that didn't have nearly the triclopyr content as this product. I have a few spots in the yard that I'll be treating.
This stuff is potent and really does the trick on creeping charlie and clover. It took me two applications to fully get rid of it, hasn't been back since when I couple it with pre-emergent. Thanks for watching!
@@TheLawnLover you're welcome. When including the pre-emergent, is there a brand you recommend?
@@Daddyo7391 I don't actually include it in my spray mix, I do it in the spring and fall. I like using prodiamine as the active ingredient for pre-emergent.
@@TheLawnLover gotcha, thanks for clarifying and the suggestion. Much appreciated.
Wanted to share that here on Illinois, I applied in July and had mixed results. Ironically, in area where they was almost no lawn grass, the weed was almost fully eliminated. On the lawn where creeping Charlie is mixed in, it didn’t have much effect.
I will be applying again for Labor Day now that daytime temps are in the 70s and 80s to see if results are better.
Also I’ve heard that mixing 2-4-D in as a combo can yield good results. Thoughts?
Mixing 24D into the mix will definitely make it more potent on some other broadleaf weeds, but I am unsure if it will make the triclopyr more effective on the creeping charlie because I personally have not tried it. Depending on how bad your creeping charlie outbreak is, it definitely may require a few applications to full kill it. Mine took 2 applications to fully get rid of it. You will likely have better success in the lower temps. Good luck!
I found creeping Charlie in my backyard a few times but he was finally caught and arrested.
My neighbours name is Charlie. We both have creeping Charlie in our backyards.
To add to the information that has been given by other folks. It's best to spray in the fall. This will weaken the plant over winter. The other time is after flowering in the spring. The plant will have used alot of energy to flower. If your neighbor has creeping charlie, ask if you can spray their lawn where it connects to your lawn. You will have to spray every year to stop theirs from creeping to your yard.
The neghbor won't let me spray, however after treating it with the triclopyr and coupling it with a pre emergent plan, it remains creeping charlie free back there. Thanks for watching!
I'm going to try this in the spring. I dethatched and overseeded this past fall. So much Charlie vines that I had to clean my dethatcher attachment after every row.
Yeah, I would definitely recommend this product, it has worked very well for me. It may take you a few applications depending on how bad your Creeping Charlie is, but it definitely works. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you for posting this helpful video
Glad it was helpful! This stuff WORKS - got rid of the Creeping Charlie I have had back there for years after 2 apps last summer. Love this stuff and it is pretty inexpensive too. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate your support!
I've used a variety of products over the years. I manage to keep under control but have never eliminated it.
It has been a year so far and still doing good creeping charlie free. Fingers crossed 🤞
Hi-yield is sold at True Value stores. I have it in a sunny area. I didn't get it until I started a lawn service. Must have picked it up from a customer. Using a good quality fertilizer will knock it out sometimes. 🐀🐾
Thanks for the great video! I got all the information I needed. Much appreciated.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video. It really helped taking care of the creepy charlie in my backyard
Awesome, I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
i might like to have some Creeping Charlie, as there are parts of my property that grass just doesn't grow. At least not very well, been able to fill in a lot but still have more. Actually I'd rather have more crabgrass, its tough, grows anywhere and survives almost anything. Tried to buy some crab grass seed one time... but just got laughed at. might have to transplant some.
It looks like it worked well. That Purdue book is pretty cool!
The Purdue book is a valuable resource, I have used it many times since I purchased it. Thanks for watching.
I ordered the book this evening.
The book is so helpful!
Great video. Can you tell me why you don't spray the area that is on "your" side of the fence, even though it is technically the neighbor's yard?
They didn't want it sprayed in their lawn and it's not my property so I didn't spray it.
@@TheLawnLover Thanks for responding. You're a good neighbor. (I'd spray it.)
Thanks for a great video. I followed your directions. It works. One thing- the directions on my label say " if a surfactant is used, apply 1-2 quarts per acre". Not sure the difference??
Thanks for watching! From what I learned from other comments since this video was posted, it appears the manufacturer updated their label.
I love my lawn, I love that mixed w/ the grass is a nice mix of narrow leaf plantain, violets, dandelion, clover, creeping Charlie & many other medicinal. & edible"weeds". Plus the bunnies eat them & leave my veggies alone!😅
Thanks for watching!
I'm with you!!! love all the tiny flowers and mix of leaves. Very "cottage" vibe.
I was so excited to see this video from The Lawn Lover to finally rid my lawn of Creeping Charlie. I purchased the Hi Yield Triclopyr, followed the video using a Hudson sprayer, treating the Creeping Charlie per instructed with 3/4 oz per gallon of water and now three weeks later it looks like it was never touched! The weed looks like it is just fine, the only thing changed is my grass has yellowed wherever I sprayed! I took before and after pictures and the creeping charlie looks the same. So disappointed, wasted so much time and the cost of the product. 🙁
I am sorry you did not have success with this product on your creeping charlie. I sprayed mine twice and it killed it off and remains clear of the creeping charlie two years later since I now apply pre emergent in that area. Several others in the comments also had great success with it as well. The only thing I would say about the yellowing grass is what was the air temp when you applied it? You definitely want to apply this when the air is cooler - I am not sure where you are located. Once the grass recovers, I would spray the creeping charlie again to see if you have better success. Thanks for watching, good luck
I just purchased some, I hope I finally get rid of this junk in my lawn. Well done video.
Good luck, it works very well. Thanks for watching Richard!
Thanks for sharing, no idea why I can't get this product in my province, its considered illegal here :( I need to find something to get rid of that annoying creeping Charlie, and my neighbour doesn't take care of his lawn so that doesn't help at all!
Oh no, that sucks because this stuff works fantastic on it. Thanks for watching, good luck!
I add this to my salad as well as dandelion leaves add some lemon and olive oil…yummy
That's awesome, glad you are able to utilize it. I appreciate you watching!
Triclpyr is a main ingredient in crossbow (home depot). I had fair results, but it all grew back.
In looking at the Crossboe label, it appears to be only 16.5% triclopyr, this product is 61.6% triclopyr. If you are going after creeping charlie, give this a shot. Mine remains completely gone almost a year later
Good lookin, have to give it a try!
It worked well on mine with only 2 applications - still creeping charlie free back there this spring. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice!
Thanks for watching!
Is there a certain season or temperature range where you should not apply this product? Thanks!
I typically do not apply herbicides - especially those with high potency like this one - when daytime temps exceed 85 degrees to avoid damaging the good turfgrass. When I applied this, we had a cool stretch of weather and it worked great. I put down two applications of this stuff about 4-6 weeks apart and I remain creeping charlie free back there over a year later now. Good luck!
I’ve got a horrible violet problem in my lawn. Will this work for that? If not, what do you recommend. Thanks so much for your help
Triclopyr is listed as an effective herbicide foe wild violet, but you may need repeated applications - especially if you have a bad outbreak of it in your lawn. Thanks for watching!
No less costly than Tenacity, which works if you keep at it. You miss some, so you do a gallon, then another in the spring going over areas and repeat.
I personally quit using tenacity because I hate the bleached look. This nuked that creeping charlie without bleaching my good grass
It's a nice shade of green. I'm keeping the ground ivy.
Whatever works for you, thanks for watching!
It's not ugly, is actually nice looking when it blooms. The problem is that it will spread and take over your lawn. There are spots where I've pulled it out by the roots only to have it eventually come back.
Can you tell me if you have used the blue dye to keep track of where you have sprayed so you don't miss any? Would you recommend using it?
I have used blue indicator dye in the past to monitor where I have sprayed. Just be careful with it because it will stain your skin and any surfaces that aren't grass. It can be helpful to know where you have sprayed to avoid over applying herbicide in the same area.
Creeping Charlie is also known as cat mint. It has a pleasant minty scent when you walk on it. It has small purple flowers that bees love. I have it all over my yard & simply live with it. Grass is boring. I love the purple tiny flowers of creeping Charlie, yellow polka dots of dandelions, and purple flowers of the wild violets in the Spring & Summer. God & Nature made them & they're beautiful.
If you dont have small children, or a puppy, or pets that will eat it, because it us toxic, I say leave it alone.
It's wirse to put all thear bagged & bottled poisons all over your lawn. It kills pollinators, causes serious illness, and poisons not only the "weed" but also gets into the soil and groundwater.
It's great that we are all different. You enjoy your weeds and I will enjoy my green grass. Me spraying this 800 sq ft of my lawn won't ruin the world lol
The creeping charlie is starting to get into my landscape plants. Will Tryclopyr kill them?
It will kill the desirable plants if you get any overspray on them. I would be very careful spraying the triclopyr around plants you want to survive.
Thank you for this, can this be used while overseeding?
No, this herbicide can't be used while overseeding as it will kill the new seedlings. Thanks for watching!
Creeping charlie is growing in my vinca groundcover. Do you think it will kill the groundcover since its like an ivy as well?
Yes, I would avoid anything you want to keep alive with this stuff. It is very strong and will kill desirable plants. Thanks for watching!
I put down some Ortho weed b gone in the past few days. Nobody else in the trailer hood does anything. The owner doesn't do anything in the empty lots in this small town park.
Should this product be applied in the morning if there is dew on the ground, or if it rained during the night?
I would not apply it when the grass is wet. Wait until the dew evaporates and then apply or do it in the evening to avoid applying it during heat of midday. Thanks for watching!
thank you for this method....i am about to try this....but i dont know if it will kill my grass? not sure what kind of grass i have....should i just do spot treatment or broadcast entire lawn? thanks !
What state do you live in?
I live in Canada
@@zahoopi Then you should have "cool season grass". Depending on how bad the outbreak is, you can spot spray or broadcast spray the area - you want to lightly apply the product - do not soak it. You would rather do repeat light applications than a soak application which will kill the grass. I would only treat the area where you have it and couple it with a good spring pre emergent to help prevent the spread. Good luck!
@@TheLawnLover thank you for your reply. one quick question if you can help, i would like to add some blue dye in the mix do you know the ratio how much dye i should put in? thanks
@zahoopi I haven't used the dye in awhile, but it should say on thr label how much to add per gallon of spray. It's usually really minimal. It does work great if you are spot spraying so you don't double spray the same weeds. Good luck!
Your The Man! It works 👍
That's awesome, I'm glad it worked out for you. Thanks for watching!
I was about to order tenacity, but i may try this first!
Definitely try this, it worked fantastic. I tried tenacity on this in the past with no success. Good luck!
Do you cut your grass as usual after applying this?
@Dan Vozza I would wait a day or two to mow after spraying it personally. Then just mow as normal and let it do its thing
@@TheLawnLover thanks
@@TheLawnLover I applied it Saturday, how long does it take to kill the weeds?
I have a well. Is it safe ? If not how far away from well should I go ? Thanks.
I would refer you to the product label to confirm for sure. Most herbicides when used as directed are fine to spray without having an impact on wells. You are putting down a minimal amount of herbicide with each application and when applied as directed, there should be no runoff and the herbicide will soak into the weed to kill it. Thanks for watching!
@@TheLawnLover Thank you
I love my creeping charly. Early flowers for the bees, beautiful ground cover for soil health. Easy to pull out when it grows where not wanted. Way better than grass. Why would anyone want grass? Unless your golfing.
That's great! You love your creeping charlie and I love my grass. We are all different and it's a great thing. I appreciate you watching!
Apparently you don't have any "formal" gardens. CC is very invasive and I spend lot of time pulling this crap out of my gardens, and if you don't get all the sucker-roots it just starts growing again. I do love the mint smell when I mow it though.
@@kilroy2517 your right. Mine are more of a food forest garden style. With fruit trees and bushes, herbs, rhubarb, grapes, kiwi and such. There is Wisteria, Japanese maples, bamboos, pines, birch and strawberries instead of mulch. I do have your typical peonies and hostas and the like but my gardens are more functional beauty. I also have some gorgeous statues and crystal bird baths nestled under blossoming cherry trees and decorative shrubs. While I can appreciate others formal type gardens, I'm personally not a big fan of formal plantings, decorative mulch and grass. I've always been a practical gal. I call my yard "Ali's avant garden". I also have pet runner ducks and tiny chickens the size of lovebirds that would reek havock on a formal style garden and thrive on dandelions and clover😉

FYI you should mention this in the video, yes this Product will help wipe out some creeping Charlie. HOWEVER…..if you have Bermuda grass or prolly any other
Warm season short cut turf. This product used in a flowzone 4 gallon backpack. You will literally draw your name in the lawn if you use this at the suggested rate on Bermuda, like it’s hurts it super bad or nukes it. It literally looked like every time hit the sprayer it looks exactly how roundup would look. Just fyi. Eventually I got the Bermuda to come back on the clients lawn but it took forever, lol, and it’s pronounced TRI….. clow……PEER. again I suggest using this product mainly on cool season turf
Great point on the warm season turf, thank you for pointing that out! Glad the grass came back after you sprayed it haha. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, much appreciated!
@@TheLawnLover yes sir! Lost the client over it actually but it’s a good thing cause he was annoying anyways and he runs those giant red lava rocks in the beds without borders so even mowing the yard your taking your life into your own hands, so I didn’t care he fired me for drawing letters in his lawn lesson learned about triclopere on Bermuda tho
I agree the label does suck, but where did you find you cant mix with a surfactant? Mine says it can be mixed with surfactant, and domyown also says you should mix with a surfactant.
This video was recorded 2 years ago, they have since updated the label and recommendation since there was so much confusion with it. I didn't use surfactant and had success, but definitely do what the label says I haven't used it again since it did the job. Thanks for watching!

Michael - thanks for reaching out! If you have pictures of the weed you are referencing, please email them to me at (thelawnlover@hotmail.com) so I can take a look and try to help you.
Surfactant is a liquid additive that you add to your tank for herbicides that helps the herbicide adhere to the leaf blades - typically making them more effective. This was not referenced on the label when I shot this video, but I was advised by customer support at domyown.com that the manufacturer did not recommend a surfactant with the product. Apparently they have since updated their product label since I shot this video based on a viewer comment that I received last week.
I always just mow as usual and then apply the herbicide and allow it a few days to sit before mowing again. Typically, the creeping charlie is so low to the ground that it does not get mowed, so it should not really matter, this is just my personal preference.
I appreciate you watching the videos and supporting the channel - I am glad you find the content helpful!
Hello just watched your clip on creeping Charlie. Just subscribed to your channel. Ah looking for some help on removing the crab grass TY Bob
Thanks for the sub, I appreciate it! If you are looking to kill crabgrass (but not your lawn), you want the active ingredient "Quinclorac". Most herbicides at the box stores include this in them, but if you have a bad crabgrass outbreak, I would go with something stronger (with a higher active ingredient of quinclorac). Using a surfactant (or a little dish soap) in the mix will help it stick to the leaf blades better and work more effectively.
Absolutely do use a surfactant. Creeping Charlie is extremely difficult to kill and you need all the help you can get to get it into the plant for systemic kill. Surfactant and oil aren’t recommended because they are concerned about turf damage. If you want the stuff dead quick add a little NIS and a touch of MSO
It worked perfectly for me without the surfactant. They did update their instructions since this video mentioning surfactant could be used if desired.
Just to clarify. 3:48 you said you have a couple hundred square feet. Let's guess 250 square feet. You mixed enough to cover 1000 square feet. Did you over apply it by 4 times the amount recommended?
No. I mixed the gallon and sprayed a light coating on the small area. I used the remaining up at a buddy's house. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for watching!
Do you know how to get rid of creeping charlie without killing off my seeded microclover and grass mix?
I'm not aware of any herbicide that won't kill clover, most broadleaf herbicides are labeled for it. It will be nearly impossible to get rid of since the creeping Charlie grows underground and will keep spreading.
Thanks for watching!
I have two pine trees in my yard will this end up killing them .
I have several blue spruce near the area I sprayed in the video. If you apply this according to the directions (light spray over the treatment area), it will soak into the weeds and not get to the roots of the trees. To be safe, I never spray within 6 feet or so of the base of my pine trees. Good luck!
It is sensitive to boron.
Mix 3 tablespoons of borax in a 7 liter watering can with 7 liters of water.
Try that on a back area, it should only brown off and kill the creeping charlie.
If it kills other plants in the area, reduce the mix to 2 tablespoons of borax with the water.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I have never heard of this method before. The triclopyr eliminated it in my lawn otherwise I would test it out. Thanks for watching!
I sprayed this on the creeping Charlie on my lawn, I messed up on the mixture and used 3/4 of a cup per gallon. It’s been a few days and so far nothing has happened.
Oh no! Hopefully it doesn't damage the good grass. It may take a week or two to see the full effect of it, I would spray anymore. Good luck!
Have you ever heard of anyone spraying this down in the spring to prevent creeping Charlie? Or should this only be used to treat existing Charlie?
A good pre-emergent application in the speing will help suppress it. I would only use the triclopyr on existing creeping charlie. I applied two apps of this about 6 weeks apart and fully killed what I had. Now I use pre emergent in the spring, and it hasn't been back. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the quick response! Love the channel. Got my sub!
Absolutely! Glad you are liking the channel and thanks for the sub, I appreciate your support!
When is the best time of year to apply this? Can I do it now as the cool weather is starting? I'm in the southeast.
Yes, fall is an ideal time to apply this product. Thanks for watching!
I have this stuff creeping in my flower bed and it’s mixed in with my flowers. If I use this product, will it kill the grass also that it mixed itself in with
If you apply as directed, it will NOT kill the majority of cool season grass types. You need to be careful with this herbicide on warm season grasses - check the label for specifics. I would be careful applying this in a flower bed to ensure you are not getting this herbicide on any desirable plants that you want to keep because it will kill them. Thanks for watching!
I thought stolons were above ground and rhyzomes were under ground. No? Does creeping charlie have that swamp smell when you mow it? And mostly in heavy shade areas?
You are correct, the stolons are right at the surface and spread horizontally. I have never had it smell terrible when I mow it, but it does tend to like very shady areas away from sunlight. Thanks for watching!
hey there great video how many times should I spray also will it take care of dandelion??? jz
I would not use this for dandelions use another herbicide - I like to use Triad select personally as am all around herbicide. Depending on how bad your case of creeping charlie is, it may take multiple applications. Mine took 2 applications to get rid of it spaced about 5 weeks apart. Thanks for watching!
Yes this stuff works awesome
This is a temporary fix but probably the best that an average homeowner can get their hands on.
I applied two applications last season to kill off the existing creeping charlie in this area of the lawn, but then coupled it with a pre-emergent application in the fall and another this spring and it is still holding strong - zero creeping charlie so far. I will be interested to see what happens throughout the season. I appreciate you watching and leaving a comment!
Thanks for the video! I have a couple of Thuja trees near the Creeping Charlie. Is there any need to worry about them if i am spraying nearby? Thank you!
When I spray around any type of tree or plant I'm always very careful to avoid any spray drift onto the plant/tree and I tend to go easy with the herbicide 6-8 feet around the base of the tree. The great thing with this herbicide is that when spraying a fine mist spray on the leaves, the majority of the spray tends to stay on the leaf and not soak into the ground. As long as you are careful around the shrubs/trees you should be fine - I personally have never had an issue with this herbicide harming any of my plants or trees. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching!
How about creeping Charlie in a flower bed? Thank you.
That would be tough to use herbicide and not kill off the plants you want to keep. I think your only option in this scenario is to hand pull it. Thanks for watching!
I have an area in the backyard that is all creeping Charlie, I would assume to use the product then seed the whole area after the weed has died?
Yes, if it is really bad it may need several applications - follow the instructions on the bottle for application timing and intervals for your area. I would plan to kill it this summer and overseed in thr fall at least six to eight weeks after your last application of herbicide. Thanks for watching, good luck 👍
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately can't use Triclopyr Ester where I am in canada as it is toxic to fish and aquatic life. And affects eggshell thickness for some birds like ducks/quail. And unfortunately we live near a river. Will find a non-toxic solution sometime!
Why should I want to get rid of creeping charlie? I encourage it in my lawn. It's hardy, it's beautiful, it feeds the bees, it doesn't need me to take care of it. I love it.
That's fantastic, I don't like it in ym lawn - it's great that we all have different preferences. Thanks for watching!
@@TheLawnLover I have another weed in my yard that I would love to get rid of. It's a type of vine that creeps along the ground under other foliage until it finds something it can climb, then it takes over completely. I've been following it around my property for years since it first invaded, pulling it up. It's quite sticky, and produces little round seeds that are also very sticky. The seeds are green and turn brown. They stick all over your clothes, your cat, your dog, and you. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. I would happily jump up and down on it if that would kill it. But, I don't use any poisons on my lawn. I eat the dandelions.
@Christine Robinson Totally understand! Interesting on that weed, I would have to see pics for info. Have you reached out to your local county extension office for identification and possible natural ways to get rid of it yet?
@@TheLawnLover I actually saw it identified on a homestead-type channel once. I've forgotten what it is called, but I do remember that while is bitter, it is eatable. I'll try my local county extension office. Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow. That creeping Charlie chokes out the grass and kills it. If you pull up the creeping Charlie you will have a bald lawn.
I think these ‘weeds’ are adorable and beneficial
That's great! Grow them in your lawn and enjoy 🙌
You must be related to my neighbor
Great info here. Do you anyone that can ship this product to Canada? I'm asking for a friend.
Thank you! I have had several people ask about this and as far as I know, no. Sorry, but thanks for watching!
Is creeping charlie bad? It smells great when i cut it and keeps the crabgrass away
Its not bad, I just don't like the look of it in my lawn
Great video! I have used this stuff in the past and it is legit.
great video - can you use the blue color in your spray to mark where you have sprayed?
Yes you can absolutely use the dye if you want to.
